Course requirements

Western asks Ontario students for the OSSD (the Ontario Secondary School Diploma) with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op. For Medical Sciences, four are set: English (ENG4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Biology (SBI4U) and Chemistry (SCH4U). You need at least 70% in each required course.

Western recommends Physics (SPH4U). If you can't fit it in, there's a first-year Physics course at Western, but Western says high school Physics helps with course selection. Plan your timetable with our course planner.

From outside Ontario or the IB

Students from Alberta, British Columbia and the territories need Grade 12 English, Biology, Chemistry and Calculus, with Physics recommended. Western asks for at least 70% in required courses.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need the full diploma, with TOK and the Extended Essay, six subjects (three at Higher Level), at least 27 points including the EE and TOK, and no mark below 4. Medical Sciences needs IB Biology, Chemistry and any IB Math at HL or SL. Ontario IB students are assessed on their OSSD, with IB scores converted by their school.

Beyond the average

Western says its typical first-year class enters with an average around 88%, and that it also looks for consistent performance and strength in the required courses for your program. It runs equitable and accessible admission pathways for students who haven't had the same access and supports.

If something outside your control affected your grades, Western's Special Consideration profile is due March 1, 2027. The Extraordinary Extracurricular Activities and Contributions to Citizenship profile has the same deadline.

Getting into Year 3 BMSc

The BMSc, offered by the Faculty of Science with the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, is a second-entry program. Admission happens in Year 3. In second year you apply to Year 3 and to your modules through Western's Intent to Register process, and decisions are made in May.

Medical Sciences 2 students are assured admission to Year 3 if they meet the conditions, including at least an 80% average on the 2000-level courses listed for the module they want. Others, including students in other programs, can apply from the competitive pool with at least a 75% average. Schulich says every qualified competitive-pool applicant has been admitted so far.

The catch is modules. Honours Specialization modules have fixed capacity and no set minimum average: the last student admitted sets that year's cut-off. Assured students fill them first, so competitive-pool students often land in less competitive modules or Double Majors.

What you can study

First year includes Medical Sciences 1000Y, Exploring Medical Sciences, and Calculus I. BMSc modules include Biochemistry, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences, Medical Bioinformatics, Medical Biophysics, Medical Cell Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Public Health.

Medical Sciences also leads to BSc programs in Neuroscience and Public Health, and to combined degrees pairing an Honours BMSc in Biochemistry or Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences with an Ivey HBA. From September 2027 entry, Double Majors can be completed within the BMSc (Honours) degree.

For parents

Medical Sciences isn't a pre-med guarantee. It's a first-year science program with an assured route into the BMSc for students who keep at least an 80% average on the right second-year courses.

Western reports that 81% of BMSc graduates go on to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, graduate studies or another professional school. Ask your child which module they'd want, since the popular ones fill with assured students first.
