The average you need

UCalgary gives an estimated competitive average in the low 90s for kinesiology. That is the same band it lists for engineering. It is an estimate based on past years, not a fixed cut-off, and it can move with the applicant pool.

UCalgary does not post an acceptance rate for kinesiology. Your average is worked out on the five program courses, not on a top six. Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator, then look only at the five courses UCalgary uses.

Early and standard admission

UCalgary can make early offers. For early admission it looks at four approved program courses. For standard admission it uses all five program courses, with at least one at the Grade 12 level.

Send your grades as soon as they are ready. A strong Grade 11 and early Grade 12 record can bring an offer months before the spring.

No essay or interview

The kinesiology admission pages list no personal statement, essay, interview or Casper test for high school students. Your grades in the five program courses decide your file.

That means Biology and Chemistry matter a lot. A weak mark in one of them pulls down the average UCalgary actually uses.

Dates for Fall 2027

Applications for Fall 2027 open October 1, 2026 and close March 1, 2027. The document deadline is March 15. If you get an offer dated April 1 or earlier, you must accept by May 1.

May 1 is also the residence guarantee deadline for high school students. Final transcripts are due August 1. Compare other schools on our Canadian deadlines page.

BKin or BSc

Both degrees need at least 40 courses, including 18 core courses. The BKin is for students who want less science. Its majors are Kinesiology, Motor and Psychosocial Aspects of Movement, and Leadership and Coaching.

The BSc needs 21 of the 40 courses to be science. Its majors are Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Exercise and Health Physiology, and Motor and Psychosocial Aspects of Movement. The BSc sits in the Faculty of Kinesiology, not the Faculty of Science.

UCalgary also offers combined degrees. You can pair the BKin with a Bachelor of Commerce over five years, with a BA in Dance, or with a Bachelor of Education in a five year concurrent program.

Practicum, not co-op

UCalgary kinesiology has no co-op stream. Instead, third and fourth year students can take a practicum course, KNES 441, 443 or 445. You need 20 courses done, at least 10 of them in KNES, and good standing.

Each practicum is 60 to 72 hours in one term. Placements are unpaid but earn course credit, graded credit or fail. The faculty works with more than 50 groups offering over 80 spots in areas like athletic therapy, coaching, exercise physiology, physiotherapy and research. You can take up to three in your degree.

Changing into kinesiology later

Students already at UCalgary can ask for a Change of Program between October 1 and February 1 for the next fall. With fewer than 12 units, you are judged on your high school average, which UCalgary says is typically over 90%.

With 12 units or more, you are judged on your GPA. UCalgary says this has ranged from 3.8 to 3.9 in recent years. High school requirements must be done by December 20. So a back door exists, but it is not easier.

Labs, research and facilities

UCalgary calls its Faculty of Kinesiology one of the top sport science schools in the world. Its Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre is one of eleven research centres in the world supported by the International Olympic Committee.

Students learn in the Human Performance Lab and the Dr. Roger Jackson Kinesiology Complex. The faculty also points to the Thrive Centre, which studies exercise and cancer, the Sport Medicine Centre, the Olympic Oval and an Aquatic Centre with 50 metre lanes.

Classes put a lot of weight on solving problems in labs, not just in lectures. Students can also volunteer in research labs. That lab time is useful if you later apply to graduate school or a health program.

Careers and further study

UCalgary says graduates work in health and fitness careers, or as kinesiologists who improve health and performance at work, in sport and in daily life. Students can also work toward certification as an exercise physiologist or coach.

Many students use the degree as a step to graduate school or another professional degree. The page lists coaching, recreation, health and fitness, and research as common areas. The Kinesiology Students' Society runs an event called Kindustry each year that shows more than 20 career options.

If you want physiotherapy or medicine later, check those programs' prerequisites early. The BSc's science courses can make that easier, but UCalgary does not promise entry to any later program.

Tuition for 2026-27

UCalgary charges by the course. The 2026-27 calendar, effective Spring Term 2026, lists kinesiology under most faculties. That is $738.66 per 3-unit course for Canadian students and $3,078.21 for international students.

A full year is usually 10 courses. That is about $7,387 in tuition for a Canadian student, before student fees, books and housing.

Scholarships

UCalgary's President's Admission Scholarship pays $5,000 to students with a final admission average of 95.00% or higher. It is automatic and does not renew.

Since the kinesiology average sits in the low 90s, many admitted students will be close. Push your Grade 12 marks up if you can.

For parents

A low 90s target is high. Help your child add a few other kinesiology programs with lower averages to the list. Make sure Biology and Chemistry are both in the Grade 12 timetable, since UCalgary needs both and many other kinesiology programs ask for at least one.

Watch the deadlines too. The application closes March 1, documents are due March 15, and the residence guarantee needs an application by May 1.

Moving to Calgary also means residence and travel costs. Read the University of Calgary admissions overview and our UCalgary guide.
