Western BMOS admission requirements: English plus two Grade 12 maths, a mid to high 80s guideline, and how it differs from Ivey

BMOS is Western's business degree in the Faculty of Social Science. You apply on OUAC with code ED. You need Grade 12 English and two of three Grade 12 maths. Western's average guideline is the mid to high 80s. You don't pick a module, such as Finance, until after first year. BMOS is not Ivey. Ivey's HBA starts in third year and needs its own AEO application.

What BMOS is, and how it differs from Ivey

BMOS stands for Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies. Western describes it as studying business as a social science. It is run by the DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies in the Faculty of Social Science. You start BMOS in first year, straight from high school.

Ivey's Honours Business Administration (HBA) works differently. Ivey uses a 2 + 2 structure. You study any subject at Western for two years, then do most of your business courses in years three and four. From high school you can apply for Ivey Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO) status. Ivey says AEO is a status, not a program choice, and it needs a separate application.

That means BMOS and Ivey are not either/or. You can start in BMOS and hold AEO status, because Ivey says AEO students may choose any faculty or program at Western or its affiliates for their first two years. Ivey looks for a low 90% average for AEO, against BMOS's mid to high 80s guideline. Read our Ivey HBA guide for the AEO steps.

One more difference. Western lists combined Ivey degrees with programs such as Economics, Science and Psychology, but its combined degree list does not name MOS.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op. For BMOS, those must include English (ENG4U) and two of Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U). Western says you need at least 70% in each required course.

Calculus is recommended if you are thinking about Finance. Western also says you need MHF4U and MCV4U for all Economics modules. The calendar warns that students admitted without calculus may have to take Mathematics 0110A/B plus two 1000-level math half-courses in first year to meet some module rules. If Finance is your goal, plan for MCV4U with our course planner.

The average you need

Western's admission average guideline for BMOS is the mid to high 80s. Western says these ranges reflect last year's incoming class, that some students fall above and some below, and that no minimum grade guarantees admission. It also looks at your required courses, your highest Grade 12 grades and your overall Grade 11 performance.

Western does not publish a BMOS acceptance rate. The program page lists a first-year class size of 950. Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator, and see our Western acceptance rate page for what Western does publish.

Modules: you choose after first year

The calendar is clear: you may not apply into any BMOS module when you apply to the university. In first year you take the common courses. Then you apply to a module. BMOS is a 20.0 course degree in two forms: an Honours degree (Honours Specialization or Honours Double Major) or a four-year Specialization degree.

For any Honours Specialization, you need 5.0 first-year courses with no failures. You also need an average of at least 73% on three principal courses, with no grade below 60%. Those courses are MOS 1021A/B and 1023A/B, one full math course from an approved list, and Economics 1021A/B and 1022A/B. Enrolment is limited, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a spot. For Finance, you must take Calculus 1000A/B.

An Honours Double Major pairs a BMOS major with a major outside MOS. It asks for 70% on the same principal courses. The BMOS Specialization is open after first year with a 65% cumulative average on main campus.

Staying in your module

Getting into a module is not the last hurdle. To stay in a BMOS Honours Specialization, the calendar says you must keep a 70% cumulative modular average, at least 60% in each required course, a pass in each elective and a 65% cumulative average. Students who miss these rules may be able to move to a BMOS Specialization or another program.

If you start at one of Western's affiliated university colleges, the calendar sets a higher 70% cumulative bar for some steps. Ask the college before you accept.

Commercial Aviation Management has its own steps

CAM uses a different OUAC code, EDN, and has its own supplementary application. DAN says the form is a Qualtrics survey and the deadline is March 1, 2027. It looks for a real interest in aviation, multitasking ability and personal qualities. Western lists CAM's average range as the low 80s.

The flight option needs a Transport Canada Category 1 Medical Certificate, and Western strongly recommends two hours of small aircraft flying time. Flight training starts in second year, and flight students pay the flight school directly on top of BMOS tuition.

Co-op and work experience

BMOS has no built-in co-op, but you can apply to the Social Science Co-op Program. Roles are paid and full-time, at 32 or more hours a week. You can do up to four work terms of four months each. One term earns 0.5 credits, and more than one earns 1.0 credit.

You must be declared in a Social Science module on main campus. Western's pages differ on start dates. One line says placements begin as early as the summer after second year. The eligibility list says the earliest start is January of second year. Confirm with the Social Science Co-op team.

Deadlines and fees

Apply on OUAC by January 15, 2027 for equal consideration. The Ivey AEO application is also due January 15, 2027. The CAM supplement, the Special Consideration profile and the Extraordinary Extracurricular profile are all due March 1, 2027. Ontario universities cannot require a response from a current Ontario high school student before June 1, 2027.

Western bills MOS at a higher rate than most Social Science programs. Its 2026-27 schedule lists Year 1 MOS tuition of $8,077.00 for both Ontario and out-of-province students, or $10,128.46 with fees. International students pay $60,105.00 in tuition, or $63,104.46 in total. For comparison, Year 1 Social Science tuition for Ontario students is $6,171.00. The schedule is marked draft.

Admission scholarships are automatic. A final average of 92% or more earns $3,500, and 90% to 91.9% earns $2,500. Western also offers 250 Scholarships of Excellence worth $8,000. Consideration is guaranteed if your application and documents are in by March 1.

For parents

BMOS is a good fit for a student who wants business with a social science lens and a direct start in first year. The key risk is the first-year marks. A 73% average on the principal courses decides the Honours Specialization, so first-year math and economics matter as much as the high school average.

If your child also wants Ivey, BMOS can be the first two years. Budget for MOS tuition, which is higher than standard Social Science tuition at Western.
