UVic is in Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, and there is no bridge or roadway connecting the island to mainland B.C. Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is about 25 km north of the city; students flying into Vancouver (YVR) must arrange onward travel by ferry or a connecting flight. Regular ferry service runs from Vancouver, the Gulf Islands, and Washington State.

High-school applicants who apply and submit grades by early December can be considered for early admission. Most September-entry degree programs close January 31; Teacher Education post-degree programs close January 2. Test routes include IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20 (or 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 on the new scale), Duolingo English Test 120 with no subscore below 110, CAEL 70 with no section below 60, PTE Academic 65 with no skill below 60, and Cambridge C1/C2 at 180 with no skill below 170. Engineering

Apply to the Engineering entry route, then progress into Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Data Science, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering. Engineering co-op is mandatory and normally includes four work terms.

Computer Science

A distinct entry route from Engineering. Computer Science co-op is optional; eligible students normally apply after first year rather than being automatically enrolled.

Commerce

Direct high-school entry to the BCom route with a required supplemental application. Students join a cohort of 60 starting in Year 2; one work-experience term is required, most students complete two, and an optional third earns the co-op designation.

Climate Science

Not a direct first-year application choice. Enter through Earth Sciences in Science or Geography in Social Sciences, then declare Climate Science after one year of full-time study.

Nursing

Not a direct UVic high-school entry route. Students enter through an approved partner institution and later continue into the UVic Nursing degree pathway.

Public Health and Social Work

Later-entry structures: Public Health is entered in year two and Social Work in year three. Applicants should not treat either as an ordinary first-year direct-entry choice.

Undecided exploration

Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences offer undecided entry so students can explore first-year subjects and usually choose a major after first year.

Applicants enter through the Engineering route and progress into Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering. Engineering co-op is mandatory and normally includes four work terms, and summer entry is available to high-school graduates with a December 31 deadline.

Fall 2027 criteria are not yet published. The published Fall 2026 guarantee required graduating from high school in 2026, no prior post-secondary attendance, and a residence application by May 1—admission offers were not required first. The application opened the first Monday in February with a non-refundable C$50 fee; room offers went out from mid-March to August (guarantee students predominantly by the end of June), with 48 hours to accept and a C$250 security deposit.

Automatic entrance scholarships based on admission average (no application) are published for the 2026–27 year: C$3,000–C$6,000 one-time for Canadian citizens and permanent residents admitted with 90%+ (or 32 IB points), and C$15,000 one-time for international students admitted with an A- or equivalent. Renewable scholarships normally require a minimum 90% admission average, and UVic does not round percentages up.
