Use Science (Undecided) to explore a BSc

UVic allows high school and transfer applicants to enter Science (Undecided). You can take a range of courses before declaring a program after one or more years of full-time study. This is a real admission route, not a claim that every later major has the same course plan. Look at a few likely programs before choosing first-year subjects so that your exploration still prepares you to progress.

The Faculty of Science offers general, major and minor programs leading toward a Bachelor of Science. Its subject areas include biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth and ocean sciences, and statistics. Some options combine fields. If you want to study how living systems work, that may lead to a different first-year plan from one centred on mathematical models or rocks and the ocean. Compare the actual subjects rather than choosing Science as an empty backup label.

The University of Victoria hub covers the wider institution. UVic Computer Science and Engineering already have separate requirements pages. Their similar names don't make their course floors or estimated averages transferable to this faculty. This guide owns Science entry, including the undecided option, rather than duplicating those established program decisions.

Check junior Chemistry and Physics as well as Grade 12

Ontario applicants need Chemistry 3U and Physics 3U. At the senior level, the list requires English 4U at 73% and Advanced Functions 4U at 77%. You also need two approved science 4U courses and two further 4U or 4M courses. U means university preparation; M means university/college preparation. Count the full set before comparing averages. Two strong senior sciences do not remove a junior subject that the page separately requires.

The published senior science requirement allows you to prepare for different fields, but it does not make every timetable equally useful. If you are choosing between possible majors, read their introductory university courses. Consider which school subjects will prepare you for those courses. That is academic planning advice, not an additional admission rule. Don't call Calculus a broad-category requirement when the checked Ontario list specifically names Advanced Functions instead.

Use the university's approved-course list when a school offers an unusual science or an alternative curriculum. A general elective with science in the title isn't automatically an accepted prerequisite. If a required course is missing, ask admissions about a valid way to complete it before applying. Our school course planner can help organize the options, but the university decides which course equivalencies it accepts.

Read Minimum 85% as an estimate from recent cycles

The current Science page prints Estimated admission average: Minimum 85%, based on the required Grade 12 courses. It explains that the estimate comes from recent admission cycles. The actual average needed can be higher because of competition and limited capacity. The 2027-28 viewbook also gives Canada 85% under Estimated admission average. Its publication year is clear, but the underlying recent cohorts are not named beside the figure.

Keep the word estimate when using that number. It isn't a guaranteed Fall 2027 cutoff, an admitted-class mean or an acceptance rate. English at 73% and maths at 77% are separate course floors. Meeting both doesn't prove your overall record meets the published estimated context. Equally, having an overall mark above the estimate doesn't remove either course condition or the requirement to submit a complete academic record.

An Ontario result from the Top 6 calculator can be a useful planning check. Include the required subjects and verify course levels. UVic's own assessment follows its curriculum rules, so do not treat a simple six-course result as the same calculation for every province or foreign credential. Recheck the program page on November 1, 2026, keeping any new estimate under its own year and label.

Use provincial rules without importing an Ontario Top 6

For BC and Yukon, the Grade 11 preparation includes English, Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, Physics and approved social studies. Senior study needs English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12, Pre-Calculus 12 and two approved sciences. The English and maths floors are 73% and 77%. UVic explicitly says two versions of the same science, such as Physics and AP Physics, don't count as two separate science subjects in this list.

Alberta's list names English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1 and two approved science 30 courses, alongside the junior preparation. Its current English and maths floors match the Ontario percentages, but the curriculum structure is different. Use the full province entry rather than adding a guessed number of extra courses. The university's page shows the other provinces too, including how two Saskatchewan English results can be combined where required.

The Northwest Territories has a specific curriculum change. UVic says graduates in 2027 or later use BC-based requirements, while graduates in 2026 or earlier use the Alberta-based list. Your graduation year therefore changes the relevant instructions. This isn't a reason to choose whichever course set looks easier. Match the school curriculum and graduation year on your record, then ask admissions about any mixed history or uncertain equivalent.

Match the international credential and subject levels

IB applicants need the full Diploma and at least three Higher Level subjects. English can be Standard or Higher Level with a score of at least 3. Accepted maths needs at least 4, and two of Biology, Chemistry or Physics are required. Maths Studies and Applications and Interpretations at Standard Level are not accepted for this Science list. The estimated Diploma score is 30 before additional points. It remains an estimate from recent cycles.

British-patterned applicants can present three A Levels, two A Levels with two distinct AS Levels, or four distinct AS Levels under the published conditions. Each exam must be at least C. The page also requires English, advanced maths and two sciences, with at least one science at advanced level. Its three-A-level estimate is BBC. Keep the credential minimum and the stronger estimated guidance separate instead of silently replacing one with the other.

The Science page also gives a US estimate of 3.40 cumulative unweighted GPA and subject preparation across English, maths, sciences and social studies. Other national systems have their own credential and course rules. Use the international minimum-credential list alongside the Science subjects. English language proficiency is a further check where required. Don't invent a percentage conversion or assume a passport tells the university which academic system to assess.

Apply by January 31 and follow the document checklist

The 2027-28 viewbook explicitly gives January 31, 2027 for Fall 2027 applications. The central deadlines page describes January 31 as the standing annual date for most September degree programs. Apply through EducationPlannerBC, then use the UVic application portal for follow-up tasks. The Canadian university deadline guide can help keep this date beside your other provinces' choices without making one system's deadline apply to all schools.

UVic's application steps distinguish school records. BC and Yukon students use the StudentTranscripts Service. Other current school applicants upload in-progress transcripts as instructed. A person who has already graduated must arrange official final records. Your checklist shows the documents and language-evidence deadlines for your file. No single invented document date is added here. Check the list after applying and respond when the university requests an updated record.

No mandatory Science essay, portfolio, interview or Casper test is listed on the checked program instructions. UVic does have an optional expanded-qualifications route for a limited number of Canadian high school students. That is a separate assessment option, not a required essay for every applicant or an automatic waiver of missing subjects. Read that route's own eligibility and instructions if it fits your circumstances.

Compare the science you will do and optional co-op

The faculty says hands-on learning starts in first-year labs. Later study can include field courses, research courses and directed or honours projects. These differ by program. Read how the possible majors teach and assess the subjects you enjoy. Liking school Biology can lead to several different scientific methods at university. A timetable that lets you explore should still meet the preparation needed for the next courses.

Co-op is an optional addition available in Science programs. The faculty describes alternating academic terms with paid work terms. Access to the work stream and success in an employer's selection process are separate steps. You should check the entry conditions and work-term schedule for your intended program. Don't assume a general Science offer assigns you a laboratory job or provides a future salary that can be used to pay the first tuition bill.

The faculty also describes research experience through courses, honours work and other opportunities. A place on a particular project isn't guaranteed to every new entrant. Think about which field you would want to study if your first preferred lab or employer isn't available. This makes the comparison more useful than relying on a list of possible careers. Further graduate or professional study has its own admission requirements.

Use the current fee period and confirm your next step

The tuition estimator identifies rates effective May 1, 2026. The 2027-28 viewbook keeps its cost examples tied to May 2026 and the 2026-27 housing or student-fee periods. A new cover year doesn't turn those references into approved Fall 2027 tuition. Use the estimator with the correct faculty, residency and study load. Missing future rates remain unconfirmed rather than being increased by a guessed percentage.

The UVic school hub covers broader funding, and its residence section covers housing. Plan for books, travel and living costs as well as tuition. An optional co-op job and a possible entrance award are not confirmed funds. Keep the year and assumptions with every estimate, especially when comparing a science degree with a program whose work terms change the study calendar.

Your next task is to check both junior sciences and the full senior subject list. Identify a few likely BSc directions, then confirm that the first-year plan can serve them. Submit the application by January 31, 2027 and follow the portal checklist. Recheck the undated estimate and future fee approvals on November 1, 2026. Read the program and co-op conditions again before registering for university courses.
