Treat the estimator as a starting point for the actual bill

UVic's admissions estimator gives a basic estimate for full-time study. Its page dates tuition rates to May 1, 2026 and warns that some ancillary fees may change for Fall 2026. It also says the whole-degree tool is being updated. Keep that caveat beside the numbers rather than treating an estimate as an assessed balance.

We read the public rate data used by that tool for domestic and international Humanities, Engineering and Computer Science, and Business. The results label the undergraduate amounts as two terms of study. They also split international tuition into Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 rows. Adding those four rows would not describe one year's tuition.

The account for a registered student is more specific. In Online tools, use the Term Balance on the Account Summary to see what is due. A course change, program fee or work term can alter that amount. The UVic overview keeps the broader school choice; this page helps you read the cost basis.

Keep UVic units separate from Ontario course labels

Most UVic undergraduate courses are worth 1.5 units. The government-aid guide equates 7.5 units in a term with a 100% course load. That unit system isn't the same as an Ontario high-school credit or another university's credit system. Use UVic's own course values when you plan registration and check a funding application.

A full-time aid threshold isn't the same thing as a full degree pace. Most provinces use at least 4.5 UVic units per term for full-time aid, with listed disability exceptions. Newfoundland uses a different threshold. The entrance scholarship rules normally require twelve units across the September-April session, including a stated graded-unit minimum. These tests serve different purposes.

The cost comparison uses the estimator's published full-time, two-term basis. It doesn't reverse-engineer a per-unit price from a rounded total. If you take fewer courses or add a Summer term, ask for the assessment that matches that plan. Check with aid staff before dropping a course that keeps your loan or award eligible.

Your fee group and international year change the comparison

The estimator groups Canadian citizens and permanent residents together. It doesn't give a separate Ontario tuition column. An Ontario applicant should still check their home province's student-aid rules before moving. Where you study, where you qualify for government aid and whether you pay domestic tuition aren't all the same question.

International Year 1 Humanities tuition is $37,576 for two terms in the current data. Engineering and Computer Science show $42,618. Business shows $37,576 plus a separate $1,252 in-academic-program fee for two terms. Faculty society and other ancillary costs sit outside those tuition rows. Don't compare tuition alone at one school with tuition plus fees at another.

The international data has other prices for later program years. Those rows aren't a promise of the fees a new Fall 2027 entrant will pay later. They belong to the current estimator. Our table retains the Year 1 label and real rate date. The UVic Commerce guide covers entry and the structure of that program.

Read student fees without doubling annual cover

The current domestic Humanities data lists $174 for the student society, $200 for on-campus athletics and $162 for the bus pass across two terms. It also lists $219 dental and $219 extended health. Our calculation is $174 + $200 + $162 + $219 + $219 = $974. This remains an ancillary estimate under the tool's stated caveat.

Health and dental each have the same value in the data's one-term and two-term fields. We count each once in the example. Doubling the entire first-term ancillary amount would overstate those annual plan costs. Check the actual plan and any valid opt-out before removing a charge. The worked example assumes no credit or exemption.

The international data adds $265 for required short-term medical cover. It appears once in the two-term output, apart from extended health. That doesn't prove all your medical costs are covered for the year. Ask UVic which primary plan you need when you arrive. Check the province's health-plan rules too, before you settle the budget.

The dormitory total already pays for standard meals

A 2026-27 dormitory double costs $14,574 for September through April. The standard meal plan is already in that total. Heat, hot water, electricity and internet are included too. An ordinary single costs more, and singles in the newer named buildings have their own row. Use the rate for the actual room offer.

Food Services lists the Standard Meal Plan at $7,756 for 2026-27. It contains food spending funds, Flex Funds, a service delivery fee and a capital fund. That whole payment isn't a balance you can spend freely at any outlet. It also shouldn't be added to the dormitory package again. Extra food needs can still fall outside the standard plan.

Pod rooms, Cluster units and apartments don't include standard meals in their room price. First-year students mainly choose dormitory rooms, with selected pod living-learning options. A cheaper Cluster row isn't proof that you can book it as a first-year student. Our UVic room comparison and meal-plan guide cover those choices in more detail.

The worked first-year subtotal leaves personal costs open

The domestic Humanities total is $22,092.00, our calculation. The sum is $6,544.00 tuition + $974.00 student fees + $14,574.00 for a double room with meals. It uses the current two-term tuition estimate and the published eight-month room package. It isn't a promise of your account balance or a quote for another faculty.

We deduct no award, bursary or health-plan refund. The total leaves out application fees for both UVic and housing. It also leaves out books, equipment, travel, extra food and personal spending. We haven't guessed those costs. Security is outside the subtotal too, but you still need cash to pay that deposit when the room offer arrives.

Build a separate cash schedule beside the cost total. A credited admission deposit and housing acceptance payment come earlier than the remaining bill. They don't increase the tuition or residence price twice. You can enter your own figures in the university cost calculator, which has no saved UVic preset. Keep each entry's cycle and included charges with it.

Co-op has a payment basis that the broad tuition table can't show

The main co-op page labels its fees 2026/27, effective May 1, 2026. Business and Engineering students pay in parts each term. The domestic rate is $411.86; the international rate is $882.30. Other students normally pay after they secure a work term. Their rate is $823.72 domestic or $1,764.60 international. The same payment pattern doesn't fit every program.

Engineering's separate page says BEng and BSEng students pay for four required work terms through eight instalments after entering co-op. But it still quotes $403.78 domestic and $848.37 international. Those lower amounts conflict with the dated main schedule. The estimator also rounds its Engineering co-op line. Ask the co-op office to confirm the assessed instalment and start term.

Our Humanities example doesn't include co-op because it doesn't assume a work term. Nor does it subtract future wages to make the first year look cheaper. Job timing and pay aren't certain funds for a deposit. The UVic Engineering guide owns the program's study pattern; keep its co-op plan beside the fee assessment.

Pay the correct account before money has to arrive

The current calendar gives September 30, 2026 for first-term tuition and January 31, 2027 for second-term tuition. Online tools shows the balance by term. Canadian online banking usually needs one or two business days. Convera normally needs three to six. A transfer started on the due date can arrive late, so use the receiving date in your plan.

UVic doesn't accept cash, e-transfer or credit cards for ordinary tuition. An international acceptance deposit has a separate credit-card option with a processing charge. Don't assume that option continues for later tuition. The payment page explains the accepted methods and how to identify your student account. Keep the payment record until the credit appears.

Residence has its own account. The current 2026-27 schedule gives August 1 for the first balance. The second-term room deposit is due October 1, then the balance on November 15. Sending housing money to Tuition won't pay Residence. The tuition site's instalment plan is for graduate students with eligible income. It doesn't establish a monthly plan for all undergraduates.

Separate credited deposits from refundable security

The acceptance deposit is $250 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents or $5,000 for international citizens. It credits tuition. If you change your mind, the normal rule is no refund. Visa refusal and failure to meet admission conditions have stated exceptions. An approved exception has a $250 processing fee, with an added credit-card charge where applicable.

A room offer normally gives you forty-eight hours to accept its contract and pay the required amounts. Residence lists a $1,000 acceptance payment toward Term 1 and a $1,000 room deposit toward Term 2. They are payments within the room price. The $250 security deposit is different: it is held and can be reduced for cleaning or damage before a refund.

The $50 housing application fee can't be refunded or used to pay for the room. Once you accept a room, send any cancellation in writing under its rules. Meal plans can't be refunded either. Eligible unused funds carry forward under the plan's terms. Read the tuition offer, room contract and food rules. Cancelling one doesn't cancel all three.

The UVic application fee depends on where your transcripts come from. It is $89.50 if all your schools are in Canada. It is $184.00 if any are outside Canada. This fee is outside our worked subtotal. Citizenship sets the tuition deposit instead. Your offer email gives that later deposit's due date, and it credits tuition.

Tuition refunds depend on the course deadline and the reason

For standard first-term courses, September 22, 2026 was the full tuition-reduction boundary. October 13 was the half-reduction boundary. Second-term 2027 dates are January 19 and February 9. Later academic withdrawal deadlines aren't new refund windows. Non-standard courses and Law can have different dates, so check the course rather than only the term heading.

When a drop qualifies, the credit goes to your tuition account and can pay other fees or a future term. A bank refund is a later step. UVic lists direct-deposit and cheque options, while wire and Convera credits return by wire. Its ordinary guidance says a refund can take two to three weeks. Don't count the credit as cash already received.

A late-drop refund needs the stated academic concession and a separate evidence review. The request deadline is within two years after the term ends. The university considers the circumstances and time registered. A financial change or not knowing the deadline doesn't by itself qualify. Approval of a withdrawal should therefore never be treated as proof that tuition will be returned.

Aid eligibility and release timing need separate checks

Apply for Canadian government aid through the province or territory where you meet the residence rules. UVic suggests applying at least two months before classes if you need early funding. Its statement that applications are usually available in June is general guidance. It isn't a confirmed opening date for 2027-28, and a waitlisted course doesn't establish a funded course load.

Ask the lender and aid office when new funds will be released for your own study period. UVic's separate confirmation page also covers keeping past loans in study status. It expressly says that process doesn't disburse new funding. An interest-free-status form isn't evidence that money is on its way to pay the current tuition bill.

General bursaries have their own rules. You must normally be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. You also need the maximum full-time government aid and the stated load. The standing Winter application period is August 15-October 15. Decisions come by the end of December, after September tuition. These grants add to other funds. The UVic aid section keeps the wider award choices.

Use confirmed Fall 2027 opportunities without inventing its prices

UVic has published its 2027-28 automatic entrance awards. Eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents can receive $1,500-$5,000 once, with at least 90% or 32 IB points. The international band lists $15,000 with its own terms. Canadian high-school students outside B.C. must report their marks in the stated window. Final grades and course load still matter. A planning average doesn't promise an award.

The awards page says final marks are reviewed in August, and funds apply to assessed tuition and fees subject to the required load. The new housing guarantee is also published: eligible direct 2027 high-school graduates apply to UVic by January 31 and residence by February 15. Housing opened October 5, 2026. All on-campus rooms are at Gordon Head, so West Shore applicants need a commute check.

The calendar confirms Fall 2027 tuition payment on September 30. Standard-course full and half reduction boundaries are September 21 and October 12. The checked sources don't publish 2027-28 tuition, ancillary, insurance or room-and-meal prices. They don't confirm Winter 2028 course-refund dates, a general undergraduate payment plan or a 2027-28 government-aid opening. Recheck February 1, 2027 and before committing money. Keep the Canadian application deadlines separate from the fee tasks.
