McGill internships, co-op, and career support
McGill has no single university-wide co-op program. The Faculty of Engineering runs mandatory co-op in exactly three programs and an optional, paid Engineering Internship Program for six others. Everywhere else, students work through the Career Planning Service and faculty-specific career centres. Plan for a structure you opt into, not one that is handed to you at admission.
Engineering Internship Program (EIP)
Optional and paid, open to full-time students in Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Internships run 4, 8, 12, or 16 months at a minimum of 35 hours per week, and unpaid positions are not eligible.
How the EIP designation is earned
Students must be registered full-time before the internship and return to full-time study afterwards, keep at least 12 credits remaining in the degree (minors excluded), and complete at least two internship terms — or a single 8, 12, or 16-month internship. The degree name then becomes Bachelor of Engineering Internship Program.
Mandatory co-op programs
Mining Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Software Engineering are the three McGill undergraduate programs the Faculty of Engineering describes as having mandatory co-op work terms.
Central career support
The Career Planning Service (CaPS) publishes career counselling and advising, skills workshops, experiential learning, mentoring, and networking events for students and recent alumni, with job postings on the myFuture platform. Faculty-specific centres exist for Engineering, Management, Law, Medicine, Education, and the Max Bell School of Public Policy.
