McGill internships, co-op, and career support
McGill has no single university-wide co-op program. The Faculty of Engineering runs mandatory co-op in exactly three programs and an optional, paid Engineering Internship Program for six others. Everywhere else, students work through the Career Planning Service and faculty-specific career centres. Plan for a structure you opt into, not one that is handed to you at admission.
Engineering Internship Program (EIP)
This program is optional and paid. It is open to full-time students in Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Internships last 4, 8, 12, or 16 months. Interns work at least 35 hours per week. Unpaid positions do not qualify.
How the EIP designation is earned
Students must be registered full-time before the internship and return to full-time study afterwards. At least 12 degree credits must remain, excluding a minor. Students complete two internship terms or one placement lasting 8, 12, or 16 months. The degree name then becomes Bachelor of Engineering Internship Program.
Mandatory co-op programs
Mining Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Software Engineering are the three McGill undergraduate programs the Faculty of Engineering describes as having mandatory co-op work terms.
Central career support
The Career Planning Service (CaPS) offers career counselling and advising. It offers skills workshops, experiential learning, and mentoring too. It also offers networking events. Through myFuture, students can search for jobs and internships. Students can register for events and upload application documents. They can book career advising as well. Faculty-specific centres serve Engineering, Management, Law, Medicine, and Education. They also serve the Max Bell School of Public Policy.
