What Guelph calls its kinesiology program

If you search for Guelph kinesiology, the program you want on the main campus is Human Kinetics. It is a major within the Bachelor of Science, offered by the Department of Human Health Sciences in the College of Biological Science. Guelph says it focuses on the science behind human health, movement and performance, from anatomy and biomechanics to nutrition and exercise physiology.

Guelph's calendar does list a Bachelor of Applied Science with a major in Kinesiology, but it sits in the separate Guelph-Humber calendar. That program pairs a University of Guelph honours degree with a Humber College diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion, and it includes two workplace field placements. It is a different program with its own admission rules. This page covers Human Kinetics.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD and at least six 4U or 4M courses. For Human Kinetics, those must include English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), two of Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Physics (SPH4U), and two more 4U or 4M courses.

Guelph recommends all three sciences. If you are missing the third, you take a replacement course in your first semester. The calendar also points students without Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry or Physics to a revised schedule of study. Taking all three in high school keeps your first year on the standard plan. Plan it with our course planner.

The cut-off range and how Guelph uses it

Guelph lists an estimated cut-off range of 80-85% for Human Kinetics. It says the range is based on admission averages from previous years and is a point of reference only. Exact cut-offs depend on the number and quality of applications and the space in the program. Guelph also says cut-offs early in the cycle typically exceed the estimated range.

Your admission average is your top six completed 4U or 4M courses, including required subjects. Co-op courses don't count. Guelph does not publish an acceptance rate for Human Kinetics. Check your average with our Top 6 average calculator, and see our Guelph acceptance rate page for what Guelph publishes.

Alternate offers and the Student Profile Form

If your average is too low for Human Kinetics, Guelph will automatically consider you for BSc Biological Science. Guelph says you can accept that alternate offer and still be considered for your first choice through the remaining offer rounds, until May.

Human Kinetics has no required supplement. Guelph's Student Profile Form is optional but strongly recommended. If your May average is below the final cut-off, Guelph may consider your form if you fall within a discretionary range of up to 5% below it. The form is due April 1, 2027.

Getting in after first year

BSc students who were not admitted straight into Human Kinetics can apply to transfer. After first year, you need 4.0 science credits in a BSc specialization. You also need an average of 70% or better in BIOL*1070, BIOL*1080 and BIOL*1090. With 65% to 69.9% in those three courses, entry is competitive based on space.

You apply to the Department of Human Health Sciences by the last day of classes in the winter semester, and Guelph makes transfer decisions by the end of June. Transfers after second or third year need 70% or better in your best 4.00 science credits from the last two semesters.

What you study

First year is a science foundation. In semester one you take Biological Concepts of Health, General Chemistry I, Elements of Calculus I and Physics for Life Sciences. In semester two you add Discovering Biodiversity, Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology, General Chemistry II and Physics for Life Sciences II.

Second year moves into biochemistry, biomechanics, genetics, statistics, human physiology and nutrition. In third year you take Applied Human Kinetics and either a dissection or a prosection anatomy course. Guelph says dissection-based anatomy is an experience available to few undergraduates in Canada. The major needs at least 20.00 credits.

Co-op and careers

Human Kinetics has no co-op option. It is not on Guelph's list of programs that offer co-op, which includes BSc majors such as Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Human Health and Nutritional Sciences. You can still gain hands-on experience. Guelph says students can take research courses with a faculty member in exercise physiology, nutrition and metabolism, or the neuromechanics of human movement.

Guelph lists careers such as health researcher, kinesiologist, physiotherapist and ergonomist. It says many graduates go on to graduate or professional programs, including medicine.

For parents

Human Kinetics is a science degree with a lot of chemistry, physics and biology in first year. The Biological Science alternate offer is a real back-up, because students can transfer in after first year with strong biology marks.

If your child wants a degree named Kinesiology or a college diploma with placements, look at the Guelph-Humber program separately. It is a different program with its own admission rules, so check its requirements on their own.
