University of Guelph co-op programs and requirements
Guelph currently advertises more than 65 co-op programs. Degree co-op students normally complete three to five paid, full-time work terms, depending on the major, while alternating among academic, work, and sometimes off semesters. Co-op is part of the degree schedule, not a guaranteed placement service: students complete preparation, apply and interview, and compete for employer offers.

Direct-entry and in-course co-op admission
High-school applicants choose the degree co-op option through OUAC. Guelph lists an 80% university-level high-school average as the minimum for degree co-op consideration, but admission depends on program space and competition and the actual cut-off can be higher. Applicants not admitted to co-op are normally considered for the comparable regular program where that route exists.
Eligible first-year regular-stream students can apply through Experience Guelph for competitive in-course admission. Current requirements include a minimum 70% cumulative average, full-time registration, no more than the program's permitted completed credits, available space, and the ability to follow the approved sequence. The published November 28, 2025 and April 6, 2026 deadlines are previous-cycle dates; Guelph has not yet posted the equivalent Fall 2027 application windows.
Computer Science, Software Engineering, and work-term sequences
Guelph's current Bachelor of Computing co-op page shows a five-year sequence with five scheduled work semesters for students starting in Fall 2025 or later. The schedule places the first work semester in Winter of second year, a Summer term in third year, three consecutive work semesters across fourth year, and final academics in fifth year. The official Computer Science calendar says at least four completed terms—including summer, fall, and winter—are required for the co-op designation and the fifth is optional.
Other programs use different three-, four-, or five-term sequences. Students should never copy the Computing sequence to Engineering, Commerce, Science, Agriculture, or another degree. Courses can be offered in specific semesters, and moving off sequence can delay prerequisites or graduation.
How Guelph co-op hiring works
Degree co-op students complete COOP*1100, Introduction to Co-operative Education, before the first job-search term. The non-credit course prepares students for applications, interviews, offers, and workplace expectations. Students then use Experience Guelph and can develop their own employer contacts, subject to approval of the role under the co-op policy.
Admission and portal access do not guarantee employment. Students apply and interview, employers choose whom to hire, and recruitment needs change by term. During a registered work term, students set learning goals, complete a mid-term check-in, submit the applicable work-term report, and receive an employer performance evaluation.

The official salary guide reports hourly rates from jobs held in 2025. Junior means work terms one and two; senior means work terms three through five. The figures are historical degree-level averages, not predicted pay for a student or a guaranteed return on co-op fees.

Actual pay varies by role, employer, industry, location, and work-term level. Guelph's published 2025 ranges are much wider than these averages, so students should budget conservatively.
Guelph co-op fees and OSAP
The registrar's fee table lists $405 for each co-op academic semester and $405 for each undergraduate co-op work semester from Fall 2026 through Summer 2027, unchanged from the Fall 2025–Summer 2026 rate. Degree co-op students pay eight academic-semester fees plus a fee for every registered work term. The fee is amortized across the program and is not tied to services received in one specific semester.
Each work term carries 0.50 academic credit, but Guelph says that credit is not included in the OSAP course-load calculation. Students using OSAP during academic or co-op terms should follow the current Guelph financial-aid instructions for their actual registration. No Fall 2027–Summer 2028 fee has been posted yet.
International students in Guelph co-op
International applicants use the same program-specific co-op admission process and must maintain the full-time academic schedule, subject to approved accessibility accommodations. Guelph's current international co-op page says that, as of April 1, 2026, a separate co-op work permit is not needed for students admitted to a University of Guelph co-op program.
