Check the school and citizenship requirements first
U of T's current National Scholarship page requires Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or protected-person status. You must be in your final year at a Canadian secondary school or first-year CEGEP, plan to begin university in the coming academic year or take a gap year, and be nominated for the U of T National Book Award. These requirements are narrower than simply being a Canadian applicant somewhere in the world. Check the location and stage of your schooling as well as your status.
The page recognizes original and creative thinkers, community leaders and high academic achievers. It doesn't publish a universal minimum percentage that guarantees entry or a scholarship. Don't invent a 95% cutoff by borrowing from a different U of T award. If your school background falls outside the stated categories, contact the National Scholarship office before preparing the application. A strong transcript doesn't automatically remove the nomination requirement.

The school selects its National Book Award nominee
Each Canadian high school may nominate one student per year through the National Book Award process. Your guidance counsellor, principal or head of school can confirm whether the school participates and how it selects its nominee. Schools that haven't participated can apply to join the program through U of T. The university's public deadline is for the school's nomination, so your school may need its own earlier selection date.
For the 2027 competition, U of T says schools receive nomination access in early September and must submit by October 9, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern daylight time. Confirm that the nomination has actually been sent and that your email details are correct. Being named at an internal school awards event isn't enough to establish that the university has received the required nomination. Keep the confirmation email and follow the next steps it provides.

Apply for admission before the scholarship form
A nominee must apply to at least one undergraduate program at U of T by October 16, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern daylight time. That's the National Scholarship's early admission-application requirement. It is much earlier than some general program admission dates and shouldn't be replaced with a regular January application plan. Read the current how-to-apply page for your applicant route and chosen program.
After the admission application, U of T sends JOINid credentials. Nomination and JOINid together provide access to the National Scholarship application. Account access isn't the final submission. Complete the separate award form by October 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern daylight time. Check the submitted state and save confirmation. If credentials or nomination access are missing, contact U of T while there is still time to resolve the issue.

Arrange the confidential reference after understanding its timing
The scholarship application asks you to choose a person in your school or community to provide a confidential reference. Once you submit the scholarship application, U of T sends the referee a link to upload the letter. The current page gives November 6, 2026 as the reference deadline. That deadline is later than the student form deadline, but it isn't permission to delay arranging your referee until the final day.
Ask the person in advance whether they can complete the letter within the stated window. Give them the official instructions and accurate context about your work. They write and submit the reference themselves; you don't draft a supposedly confidential letter on their behalf. Check whether they received the email, including spam folders, and follow the university's instructions if the invitation fails. The reference is a separate completion check from your own submitted application.

Selection is based on the university's stated qualities
U of T describes National Scholars as demonstrating outstanding academic performance, creative thinking, broad achievement and a deep commitment to their school and community. The National Book Award description similarly emphasizes intellectual exploration and achievement beyond one narrow activity. These are the published qualities. The university doesn't provide a numerical rubric assigning points to particular clubs, sports, volunteer-hour totals or essay structures.
Use examples you can explain honestly and precisely. Describe your actual responsibility, decisions and contribution to the people involved. Don't embellish a project to resemble a previous winner's biography. Reading scholar profiles can show the range of experiences represented, but it doesn't turn those experiences into extra eligibility rules. U of T explicitly prohibits generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, from creating content for any undergraduate award application; it says users will be disqualified. You write every answer yourself. A consultation here can help organize deadlines and eligibility, but cannot supply AI-written application content.

Understand fee coverage, Arbor awards and limits
The National Scholarship covers tuition, incidental and residence fees for up to four years of study. U of T doesn't publish one fixed cash total for every National Scholar on the current page. Fees depend on the program and other circumstances, so describing it as a universal dollar amount would be misleading. Ask about what the award covers in your own offer rather than assuming every personal living expense is included.
The page lists Arbor runner-up awards at $7,500 in first year and $1,500 per year for three additional years. Those are distinct cash schedules, not the same fee-coverage award at a smaller percentage. Both are tenable at U of T. The public National page doesn't give one universal renewal GPA or a complete schedule for every deferral scenario. Keep those details unpublished until the university supplies them, and read the conditions attached to the award offered to you.

Separate this award from other U of T scholarships
President's Scholars of Excellence and U of T Scholars are competitive automatic awards. The National Scholarship is school-nominated and requires a separate application. The Awards Profile is another process for eligible domestic applicants seeking profile-based awards. Completing that profile doesn't submit the National form, and being considered automatically for a campus scholarship doesn't remove the National deadlines.
International applicants should read the Lester B. Pearson and campus International Scholar routes instead of applying the domestic National criteria to themselves. Campus automatic awards also vary: Mississauga and Scarborough publish different domestic average tables, while St. George doesn't offer one fixed campus-wide percentage ladder. The U of T financial-aid guide explains those alternatives and keeps each first-year amount separate from a conditional multi-year value.

Resolve the older FAQ and plan the February stage
The current official page has a clearly labelled 2027 timeline with October 9, October 16 and October 30, 2026 deadlines. It also retains an older FAQ showing nomination access in September 2025 and a 2026 admission-cycle nomination deadline of October 10, 2025. Those are different cycles. We state both rather than silently rewriting the older text or using it as the September 2027 deadline. If school instructions conflict with the current timeline, confirm with U of T.
Approximately 25 finalists are invited to virtual selection interviews in February 2027. U of T says only successful applicants are notified. Continue meeting the admission requirements of your selected program while waiting; a scholarship application doesn't complete a program supplement. Budget with confirmed campus awards and family or government aid first, then treat a possible National offer as a separate scenario. A consultation can help organize the process, but the university controls selection and the final award terms.
