Who can enter the Queen's competition

Queen's makes Major Admission Awards available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons. You may attend high school in Canada or internationally. Chancellor's is for entry to first year of an undergraduate program; the university also identifies second-year CEGEP students as eligible. Its page describes grades of 90% or higher and expects a competitive cumulative academic record across high school. That isn't a guarantee that every applicant at 90% will receive an award.

A high-school nomination is essential. Queen's won't accept nominations from institutions where the applicant is enrolled part-time. A student from Quebec may be nominated by their prior full-time high school or current full-time CEGEP. Gap-year applicants must obtain a nomination from the prior full-time school. These routes don't remove the other entry and citizenship requirements. If your educational history is unusual, ask Student Awards to confirm eligibility before preparing the full application.

Understand the graduating-class nomination quota

Schools with fewer than 250 graduating students may nominate one applicant. Schools with 250 to 499 graduates may nominate up to two, and schools with 500 or more may nominate up to three. Those are maximums, not a requirement that the school use every place. Ask your guidance office which graduating-class count it uses and when its internal selection happens. Queen's doesn't publish a universal internal school deadline.

Don't assume being encouraged to apply is the same as being selected as a nominee. Get confirmation from the official responsible for the nomination. In the MAA application, provide that person's correct name and email. Queen's sends the electronic High School Official form after you submit the online application. The official then identifies whether you've been selected. Follow up with your school to confirm the form has been completed, particularly if the message went to spam.

Start the OUAC and SOLUS sequence early

Queen's recommends applying for admission through OUAC by November 20 so you can submit the Major Admission Awards application by December 8, 2026. The source says it normally takes four to six business days to receive SOLUS access after applying. The November date is a practical access recommendation for the scholarship competition. It doesn't replace the admission or supplementary deadlines for your intended program.

Use the official MAA practice application to prepare before opening the live form. Queen's says the practice version contains the exact questions used online and is available in early October through the application-forms page. Draft your own answers, check any word limits and transfer them carefully into SOLUS. An admission application, a saved MAA draft and a submitted MAA are distinct states. Keep a submission record rather than assuming account access means the award form is complete.

Gather the correct school-grade documents

Ontario high-school MAA applicants must submit a Credit Counselling Summary or Student Status Sheet showing grades from Grade 9 through the last completed year and November grades for current courses. If November results aren't in that document, Queen's requires an additional authenticated record. The page permits a report card or grades recorded on an unofficial transcript or school letterhead, signed by a school official. Ask for the actual award-specific document rather than only a final Grade 12 transcript.

Non-Ontario applicants must provide an unofficial high-school transcript covering prior years, November grades for the courses currently taken and a list of all courses in the 2026-27 academic year. Current courses and marks may be recorded together or separately under the official instructions. Queen's asks you not to submit repeated copies of the same grades. Use the regional checklist and seek clarification if your school doesn't issue November grades in the format the page describes.

Use the selection criteria Queen's publishes

For Chancellor's, Queen's lists superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, and proven leadership. The nomination and detailed application help demonstrate those qualities. The university doesn't publish a points formula assigning fixed marks to a club title, volunteer-hour total or essay style. Avoid treating a minimum percentage as the entire assessment or presenting a particular activity combination as a winning formula.

You can prepare by identifying genuine examples that show your contribution and thinking. Explain what you did, how you made decisions and why the work mattered in its actual setting. You write the response; a reviewer shouldn't replace your experience with invented achievements or write the essay for you. Check the current application declaration before seeking outside feedback. Referees and school officials also complete their own portions, using evidence they know rather than a statement written on their behalf.

Know when the Financial Aid and Awards Profile is needed

A single MAA application can consider you for the major awards for which you're eligible. Some of those awards also require financial need and a Financial Aid and Awards Profile. The Bank of Montreal and several named awards explicitly require that extra profile. Chancellor's own published criteria aren't a general financial-need test. Don't claim that every MAA applicant must demonstrate the same household income or submit identical financial evidence.

If you want consideration for need-based awards or admission bursaries, follow the official profile instructions as well as the MAA checklist. Finishing one form doesn't automatically complete the other. Your intended program can change the value of some need-based major awards, so compare their named records rather than using Chancellor's $48,000 as the amount for the whole MAA competition. Queen's reserves the right to revise award values; the final notice is the amount offered to you.

Renewal, stacking and a possible deferral

Chancellor's pays $12,000 annually for four years if renewal requirements are met. Queen's lists at least a 3.5 GPA in a full course load each year for the three subsequent renewals. The recipient receives further details about those conditions. Before reducing credits, transferring programs or taking a leave, ask how the action affects the next payment. The total value doesn't make every instalment unconditional.

Major Admission Award recipients aren't eligible for other merit-based scholarships under the published page's rule. Don't add Chancellor's to an automatic Principal's award in your budget without clarification. Queen's says merit scholarships can be deferred with an approved admission deferral, while awards containing a financial-need criterion can't be carried into another year. Confirm the exact award you hold and the approved deferral before assuming the same treatment applies to every part of your assistance package.

Results and the next financial decision

Queen's says major-award results are visible in SOLUS in late February. An early admission offer doesn't mean the scholarship decision has already been made; applicants with early offers remain under consideration. Continue to complete program admission requirements while waiting. The MAA deadline isn't the deadline for a Commerce, Health Sciences or other program supplement. Read the program's current instructions separately.

Build a budget with confirmed funding first and a separate scenario for a possible Chancellor's offer. Use Queen's tuition and residence information to estimate the remaining cost. If the award is offered, keep the amount, annual schedule and continuation conditions from the notice. If it isn't offered, admission bursaries, government aid and other appropriate scholarships remain separate routes. Student Awards can explain an unclear notice; an adviser can't promise selection or treat an unanswered application as confirmed financial support.
