Clinical work and simulation

The degree takes four years. You do clinical placements in hospitals, communities and rural settings. Shifts last 8 to 12 hours, like real nursing work. Placements take place across Calgary and beyond.

You also train in hands on labs and simulators in the Health Simulation Learning Centre. Some students take part in study abroad and field schools. Before placements you need mask fit testing, current immunizations, CPR at the healthcare provider level and a police information check.

No co-op stream

Mount Royal's nursing page describes clinical placements and work placement experience, not a separate co-op stream. Paid co-op terms are not listed for this degree.

Graduates can write the NCLEX-RN and apply for licensure as registered nurses. Mount Royal lists roles such as registered nurse, and with more education, nurse practitioner, educator or researcher.

For parents

The 60% course minimums are low, but seats go to the strongest applicants and Casper matters. Help your child aim high in English and the sciences, and apply to a few other nursing programs too.

Mount Royal uses Casper to choose between qualified applicants, so give it real preparation time. Keep your child's grade 12 sciences strong through June, since offers stay conditional on the final 70% average.

Put three dates on the calendar: a Casper date, the February 1 deadline and the February 16 document date.
