SFU Recreation: Fitness Centre, Membership and the Pool

If you're enrolled in at least three credits and have paid SFU's Recreation and Athletics fee, your Burnaby recreation membership is already covered. You activate it by signing the SFU Athletics and Recreation waiver on go.sfu.ca, and you sign again every September because memberships expire on August 31. That gets you into the Fitness Centre in the Lorne Davies Complex, drop-in and intramural sports and racquet courts. The pool is closed for renovation.

Who's covered and how to activate

Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in at least three credits who have been charged the Recreation and Athletics fee have a Burnaby membership included. You can check for the fee in your Student Centre on go.sfu.ca. Memberships become available on the first day of term.

  • Sign the SFU Athletics and Recreation waiver online through go.sfu.ca. It can't be done in person.
  • Your access starts when the term starts.
  • Memberships end on August 31, so sign the waiver again each fall.
  • Surrey and Vancouver students also register each term at athleticsandrecreation.its.sfu.ca, then activate at a partner recreation centre near their campus.

When the fee doesn't cover you

SFU lists common reasons a student isn't covered: a co-op term, a field study, taking only online courses, or taking fewer than three credits, including in summer. Your membership also stops if your eligibility changes during a term.

If you're not covered, you can buy a community membership or a program pass. Program passes cover options such as Pilates, yoga, climbing and group fitness.

The Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre is on the bottom floor of the Lorne Davies Complex (LDC), room 088, overlooking Terry Fox Field. It's a multi-level, 12,000 square foot space.

  • The Fitness Centre lists fall 2026 closures on September 5, 7 and 30, October 12 and November 11.

The pool is closed for renovation

The Aquatic Centre is closed while the Lorne Davies Complex Renewal Project continues. SFU says crews found serious structural problems in the dive tank that need a new engineering solution. Swimming programs, camps and community swims will return once construction is finished, and SFU's aquatics page doesn't give a reopening date.

Phase One of the renewal has reopened, with renewed changerooms with lockers and saunas, a combatives space and the East Gym.
