SFU Burnaby vs Surrey vs Vancouver

A campus shown on a program page may describe where you begin, where you complete most requirements, or both. SFU's Surrey page separates complete-degree programs from first-year options and courses. Its Vancouver page lists only five undergraduate programs. Use the current program page and course schedule before treating a campus label as a four-year promise.

Surrey's complete undergraduate degrees are BASc Mechatronics, BSc Software Systems, BASc Sustainable Energy Engineering, a BBA with an Innovation and Entrepreneurship concentration, BA or BSc Interactive Arts and Technology, and BSc Operations Research. These are the clearest choices when staying based at Surrey matters. Even then, confirm each term's course locations because a degree's campus label does not establish that every elective or service is delivered in one building.

The wider first-year list works differently. SFU says every faculty has an option to start at Surrey, but its faculty-by-faculty details show what happens next. Arts and Social Sciences subjects such as Criminology, Economics and Psychology require Burnaby courses after first year. General Studies and BSc Health Sciences have the same further-study warning.

For Environment, SFU says some electives are offered at Surrey while most program requirements are completed at Burnaby. Treat the published pathway for your subject as the rule, rather than assuming you may choose any campus each year.

Vancouver is narrower for undergraduate admission. SFU currently lists Communication, Dance, Film, Gerontology, and Visual Culture and Performance Studies. The campus itself spans several downtown sites, including Harbour Centre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts and a Visual Art Studio. Check the building on the course schedule when planning back-to-back classes; 'Vancouver campus' does not mean a single building.

SFU's undergraduate housing comparison lists North Towers, East and West Towers, Courtyard Residences, McTaggart-Cowan Hall and the Townhouses at Burnaby. It describes Vancouver housing as graduate only and lists no undergraduate residence at Surrey. This matters more than the university-wide phrase 'on-campus housing': a Surrey or Vancouver undergraduate who accepts a Burnaby room would still travel to classes at another campus.

Room setup also affects the daily budget. The first-year towers and Courtyard residences have traditional single rooms and a required meal plan. McTaggart-Cowan has shared kitchens and serves first- and second-year students. Four-bedroom townhouses have a shared kitchen, living room and two bathrooms and are for second year and above. Building preferences and special community-floor requests remain subject to availability, so use these categories for planning rather than as an assignment guarantee.

For a campus decision, the durable point is location: undergraduate residence is based at Burnaby. Students considering Surrey or Vancouver should price an off-campus option near the relevant building and a Burnaby-residence commute separately before accepting housing. Each campus has a named SFU library: W.A.C. Bennett Library at Burnaby, Fraser Library at Surrey, and Samuel and Frances Belzberg Library at Vancouver. SFU’s 2023–24 library report describes the different physical environments. It identifies Bennett as the Burnaby campus hub. Fraser has computer stations and equipment supporting design and technology programs. Belzberg has study space and collections focused on contemporary arts and urban design.

Recreation access is not identical across the three locations. Eligible students activate the Burnaby recreation membership through the annual waiver. SFU says Surrey or Vancouver users must also register for the appropriate campus membership each term. They then activate it at a participating community recreation centre. Fee-covered access generally requires at least three credits and assessment of the Recreation Athletics fee. Listed ineligibility examples include co-op, field study, all-online study and fewer than three credits.

Core Enrolment Services has public locations at Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver, but hours differ and some supports are tied to particular buildings or delivery methods. Before choosing on atmosphere alone, identify where you would get program advising, use specialized labs, meet accessibility needs and exercise. A service existing somewhere at SFU does not establish the same facility or appointment pattern at every campus.

The transit pattern differs sharply. SFU's current transit page identifies Production Way–University and Burquitlam as the closest SkyTrain stations to Burnaby. It lists the 145 from Production Way, the 143 from Burquitlam, the 144 from Metrotown, the R5 from Burrard and the N35 night bus. Surrey's Central City location is beside Surrey Central station, although SFU now uses several Surrey sites. Vancouver's principal downtown buildings are near Waterfront Station. Use current TransLink schedules and the exact course building to estimate your trip.

U-Pass can make a multi-campus schedule workable, but eligibility is specific. SFU currently requires at least one course located on campus or within Metro Vancouver, at least three units or tuition over $680, and assessment of the undergraduate or graduate student activity fee. An eligible pass covers TransLink bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus; West Coast Express receives a discount and requires an additional fare. Check eligibility each term, then leave a realistic transfer buffer if one day includes classes at different campuses.
