Course requirements

High school applicants need English, Biology, Chemistry, a math and one more subject. In Alberta that means English Language Arts 30-1, Biology 30, Chemistry 30 or Science 30, and Math 30-1, 30-2 or 31. From Ontario it means English (ENG4U, ETS4U or EAE4U), SBI4U, SCH4U, and MCV4U, MHF4U or MDM4U.

The fifth course comes from fine arts, humanities, a language other than English, physical education, or math and sciences. Only one of MHF4U or MDM4U can count. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The high 80s to low 90s range

The U of A doesn't publish a single cutoff. Its competitive requirements page shows trends from the last three admission cycles: high 80s to low 90s for the BScN, and mid 80s to low 90s for the BScN Bilingual Program. It says to treat these as a benchmark, not a guarantee.

Admission is competitive and the U of A can adjust what counts as competitive during the cycle, based on how many qualified people apply and program space. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

How decision rounds work

For Fall 2027, high school applicants to the BScN Collaborative and Bilingual programs are evaluated in scheduled rounds, from the week of November 9, 2026 to the week of August 16, 2027. If you aren't admitted in one round, you are reconsidered in the next one automatically.

Once you get an offer, you have 30 days to accept and pay the deposit, or the offer is cancelled. The deposit is $500 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

If Nursing is your first choice, your second choice is evaluated while Nursing is pending. If Nursing is your second choice, it is only looked at when you aren't immediately eligible for your first choice.

Deadlines

Applications for Fall 2027 open October 1, 2026. The Nursing Collaborative Program lists March 1 as its application deadline, matching the U of A deadline for most programs. High school documents are due August 1, 2027. The entrance award application deadline is January 10, 2027.

Where you can study

You can take all four years on the U of A's North Campus in Edmonton, or at Red Deer Polytechnic, Keyano College in Fort McMurray or Northwestern Polytechnic. To study at a partner school, you apply to that school directly.

The program has six designated seats a year for Indigenous students. People who already hold a university degree apply to the BScN After Degree program instead. After second year, students can apply to the competitive BScN Honors Program, which includes a research project.

Clinical placements, not co-op

The U of A nursing pages describe clinical placements, not co-op. Hands-on training starts in your first semester. Placements happen in blocks in hospitals and community settings, and many fall within 150 km of Edmonton. Shifts can run from 7 am to 11 pm.

Students are not paid for placements, and you pay your own travel. Before clinical practice you must meet health and safety requirements, such as CPR training and immunizations. You must also be 18 before your second year starts.

Tuition

The U of A charges by course, using a fee index. For 2026-27, Canadian citizens and permanent residents pay $729.36 in tuition for a 3-credit course with a fee index of 6, which covers most undergraduate courses. Non-instructional fees are extra and are assessed after you register.

Entrance scholarships

Some U of A entrance awards need no application. They are based on your high school admission average when you get your offer. The Gold Standard Scholarship gives up to $6,000 to the top 5% of students in each faculty.

Other awards use a single form in Awards Hub. For September 2027, it opens October 1, 2026 and closes January 10, 2027. You need the CCID that comes with your admission application, and it can take two to three business days to arrive. So apply for admission well before the award date.

Students with averages of 95% or more and a strong form are assessed for the most prestigious awards. The Entrance Leadership Scholarship looks at students with 80% or more who hold leadership roles. Opportunities Awards of up to $5,000 support students from diverse backgrounds.

Applying from Ontario

The U of A says the way you send transcripts can vary by province, so check its course equivalents for Ontario. It also runs online sessions, virtual advising and campus tours for students from other provinces.

Two awards are only for out-of-province Canadians. The Fly Home Award gives up to $1,500. The National Achievement Scholarship gives the top incoming out-of-province students $30,000, paid over four years. Both use the Awards Hub form.

AP and IB courses

If you write AP or IB exams, the U of A uses the higher of the exam score or your school grade in your admission average. In its examples, an AP score of 4 converts to 86% and an IB score of 6 converts to 90%. AP and IB students may also receive up to $3,500 in entrance awards.

AP Research and AP Seminar can now count as the humanities option for Nursing. A final AP grade of 4 or more, or an IB grade of 6 or more, on listed exams can earn transfer credit or advanced standing.

First-year residence

First-year undergraduates are guaranteed U of A housing if they apply by April 30 for a Fall move-in. The guarantee does not cover Winter term. It also does not promise a certain building or room type.

Since Nursing offers come in rounds through the summer, apply for residence by April 30 even if your offer has not arrived yet.

Applying after college or university courses

If you have fewer than 24 units of transferable courses, the U of A uses your high school requirements and may also consider your post-secondary marks. With 24 units or more, it uses your high school requirements and your post-secondary marks. Competitive GPAs usually use your most recent 24 units.

Up to 60 transfer credits are allowed in any program, subject to faculty rules. For Fall 2027, transfer applications close March 1, 2027 and documents are due June 15, 2027.

For parents

Because offers come in rounds, an early application gives your child more chances. Strong Grade 11 and first-term Grade 12 marks matter.

Placements can mean early starts, late shifts and travel around Edmonton. Plan for transport costs in the budget.
