Trent Peterborough vs Durham GTA Campus

Peterborough is at 1600 West Bank Drive on the east and west banks of the Otonabee River. Trent describes a 1,400-acre campus with 30 kilometres of trails. Durham GTA is at 55 Thornton Road South in Oshawa. Its academic, residence and support spaces are concentrated in a much smaller urban site near the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex.

These are not interchangeable locations for every degree. Trent's program finder has separate Peterborough, Durham GTA and online filters, plus a separate co-op-location filter. Current direct records place Child & Youth Studies and Communications at Durham GTA. Treat those examples as orientation, then verify the complete inventory and intake details in the live finder.

Use Trent's live program finder rather than a general list copied into a guide. Filter by undergraduate study and campus, open the program, and check the available start term, degree route, co-op location and any location note. A shared program name does not establish identical course selection, specialization availability or co-op delivery at both campuses.

Campus is also part of the application choice. Trent's admissions FAQ gives the example of a Business Administration applicant changing from Peterborough to Durham: the applicant must withdraw the Peterborough choice, add the Durham program and contact Admissions. That procedure may change, so applicants should use it as evidence that campus matters in the application rather than as a promise that a later switch will always be approved.

Peterborough's five colleges are academic and social communities, not just residence labels. Trent says every student chooses a college, including commuters and students in later years. The colleges combine residence, dining, classrooms, social spaces and support. Current Peterborough housing pages list Champlain, Gzowski, Lady Eaton and Otonabee college residences, Wallis Hall and Crawford House at Traill, plus annexes across the street from Symons Campus.

Durham uses a different physical model. Its residence occupies the fifth and sixth floors of Building A, above or near academic and support spaces. Current pages describe furnished air-conditioned rooms, common kitchenettes, shared spaces, Wi-Fi, laundry and included parking. This compact arrangement may reduce daily movement, but it is not the Peterborough five-college residential layout.

All Trent-operated residence options require a dining plan. The 2026–27 fee page attaches a plan to each room type and labels prices subject to Board approval. Bata Library sits at the centre of Symons Campus and includes archives, maps and data services, a critical-making studio, research help, borrowing and group or individual study space. Durham's Library & Learning Centre is in Building A and provides research and borrowing services, group and individual study areas and a data-visualization computer. Check current hours for the location you intend to use.

Durham also publishes local contacts for academic advising, academic skills, Student Accessibility Services, counselling, wellness, housing and Student Affairs. Its support page describes no-cost, confidential short-term counselling and campus-specific library and advising routes. This matters when comparing a compact campus with the larger Peterborough network: Durham students should use the Durham contact and booking route rather than assume every appointment is in Peterborough.

Peterborough dining includes college dining halls and outlets at Symons and Traill. Durham has an on-campus café and lets residence students use common-room kitchenettes. A kitchenette does not replace the required residence dining plan. Menus, hours and accepted TrentU Card locations can change, so test food availability against evening and weekend classes before choosing housing.

For students whose home campus is Peterborough Symons, Trent says Athletics Centre membership is included in tuition fees. The facility includes fitness, pool, climbing, rowing and court spaces. Durham students receive a City of Oshawa Level 2 fitness membership in the fall and winter semesters and activate it at the Civic Centre with a current student card. The Durham page says the membership is not included in ancillary fees for summer, when students may purchase access separately.

Transit eligibility also depends on home campus and course load. Trent's current Peterborough pass page requires undergraduates to be enrolled in at least 1.5 credits in their starting semester; the 2026–27 digital pass became available September 1, 2026. Durham's DRT UPASS covers full-time undergraduates and postgraduate-certificate students, requires at least 1.5 credits each term with one in-person course, and requires Durham as the Campus Home Location. The Durham pass is valid only on DRT, not as an intercampus pass.

Do not convert university marketing travel estimates into a promised commute. Check the live Peterborough Transit, DRT and GO schedules from the housing address to the actual building. If regular travel between Peterborough and Oshawa appears necessary, confirm whether the academic plan can avoid it; neither local pass should be treated as proof of a direct or free campus-to-campus trip.

Map required classes first, then add housing, study space, meals, exercise, work and evening commitments. Visit the campus where the program is taught. At Peterborough, include the route between east bank, west bank or Traill and likely housing. At Durham, include Building A or B, the Civic Centre and the local bus connection. Recheck the program and service pages close to enrolment because course delivery, room inventory, hours and transit rules can change.
