Course requirements

Ontario Tech asks Ontario high school students for the OSSD with six 4U or 4M credits. You need English (ENG4U) and Advanced Functions (MHF4U). You also need two of Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U).

Ontario Tech recommends that you take all four of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and SPH4U. That matters here. First year uses biology, chemistry and physics, and you pick a biology, chemistry or physics specialization at the end of first year. A missing science now makes first year harder.

If you can only fit two, think about which specialization you lean toward and take that science. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The average you need

There are two numbers to watch. First, Ontario Tech requires a combined minimum 70 per cent average in your prerequisite math and science courses. Second, the program page shows last year's overall cut-off as 70 per cent and an expected cut-off in the low 70s.

These are cut-offs, not the average of students who got in. Ontario Tech does not publish an admitted student average for Forensic Science. The page says admission is competitive and the required average changes each year. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an offer.

Aim above the low 70s, and keep your math and science marks strong because they count twice. Check your standing with our Top 6 average calculator.

No essay, portfolio or interview

The program page lists courses and cut-offs only. It does not ask for a supplementary form, essay, interview or video. Your marks carry the decision.

The only essay you may meet is for Ontario Tech's application-based entrance scholarships. Those need an essay and letters of support, and they are separate from program admission.

Dates for Fall 2027

Ontario Tech has posted Fall 2027 dates for Ontario high school students. Decisions start in January 2027 and continue on a regular basis. Forensic Science is not on the early deadline list, which names only Nursing and Medical Laboratory Science.

Ontario Tech says it can change dates without notice. Check again before you apply, and compare other schools on our Ontario university application deadlines page.

What you study and the three specializations

You start with lectures and labs in biology, chemistry and physics. The program page says you learn to document a scene, collect evidence, write science reports, extract DNA, analyze blood stain patterns and testify in mock court. Training happens at the Crime Scene House, the Forensic Ecology Research Facility and the Forensic Teaching Laboratory.

At the end of first year you choose Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry or Forensic Physics. Ontario Tech says the specializations only set which group of electives you take. The degree is accredited, but the specializations themselves are not.

In your final year you complete a thesis research project, a directed studies project or a Mock Crime Scene Practicum. The practicum ends with expert witness testimony in a mock court.

Accreditation: two pages, two claims

Ontario Tech's pages do not agree on how rare the accreditation is. The program page says the BSc (Honours) in Forensic Science is accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). In one place it calls it the only fully accredited Forensic Science program in Canada. Lower on the same page, it says it is 1 of 2 forensic science programs in Canada fully accredited by that commission.

The Faculty of Science forensic page says it is the only program in Canada accredited by FEPAC. All pages agree the degree is FEPAC accredited. If the exact count matters to you, confirm with the Faculty of Science.

Co-op and work experience

The Forensic Science program page does not list a co-op stream or a co-op OUAC code. Its listed experiential learning is capstone, research study and undergraduate thesis.

The co-op office's Faculty of Science page lists paid co-ops and internships under all Science programs, alongside research projects and work-study. So co-op may be possible, but the program page does not describe it. Ask the Faculty of Science how a forensic student gets into a co-op work term before you count on one.

Ontario Tech gives automatic awards based on your best six 4U or 4M courses. The page lists $4,000 for 95 per cent or higher, $2,000 for 90 to 94.9 per cent and $1,000 for 85 to 89.9 per cent.

The application-based major scholarships need a minimum 85 per cent average, leadership and community involvement. The deadline is Thursday, February 18. You can hold only one entrance scholarship at a time.

How it compares with other Ontario Tech options

Biological Science (OUAC DSB) uses the same course rule as Forensic Science: ENG4U, MHF4U, two of the four sciences or calculus, and the 70% prerequisite average. Its page shows the same 70 per cent cut-off last year and a low 70s expected cut-off. Pick it if you want a broad biology degree with the same entry bar.

Forensic Psychology (OUAC DPS) sits in Social Science and Humanities. It needs only ENG4U plus five more 4U or 4M courses, with biology and a math recommended. Its page also shows 70 per cent last year and a low 70s expected cut-off. Pick it if you want the behaviour side of crime more than lab work.

For parents

The entry bar is published and modest: a 70% cut-off last year and the low 70s expected. The real test is first year science. Students who take all four recommended Grade 12 courses arrive better prepared.

First year tuition for 2026-27 is $6,102.46 before ancillary fees. Read our Ontario Tech university guide for campus and residence context.
