Ontario Tech Libraries and Study Spaces: Where to Study

Ontario Tech runs two libraries of its own. The North Oshawa Campus Library has four floors and about 700 study spaces. The Social Science, Humanities and Education Library sits in Charles Hall on the downtown campus. The same library system also runs the library at Durham College's Whitby campus. Your student ID works as your library card.

The two Ontario Tech libraries

Pick the library closest to your classes. The north library shares a campus with the Business and IT, Engineering, Health Sciences and Science faculties. The downtown library is on the campus of the Education and Social Science and Humanities faculties. Both split their space into areas with different noise levels.

Inside the North Oshawa Campus Library

Computer workstations on the first three floors are first come, first served. Two library labs, LIB 132 and LIB 134, hold another 60 computers, but they're used for faculty-booked classes.

  • Two dual-monitor workstations and two single-monitor set-ups for your own laptop. Borrow an HDMI cable at the service desk.
  • A colour printer on the first floor, with black-and-white printers, scanners and copiers on the other floors.
  • A digital recording room on the ground floor, bookable online.
  • An assisted-use carrel room, LIB417, with a height-adjustable table, a 22-inch monitor and adaptive software.
  • Silent study rooms on the third and fourth floors.

How group study room booking works

Group rooms at the North Oshawa library are booked through the library's own booking system, not LibCal. You'll need enough people to hold the room, and the room is released if nobody shows up.

  • The booking system rejects passwords that contain an apostrophe.

Study spaces outside the library

Most campus buildings have open study areas you can use without booking. Spaces marked "Reserve" on the study spaces list are booked through the university's space booking tool.

Borrowing and equipment loans

Your student photo ID or digital ID is your library card. You can also borrow in person at other participating Canadian university and college libraries with your Ontario Tech ID, under their rules.

Both libraries lend more than books. Laptops, headphones, webcams, chargers, power banks, calculators and stationery are available at both locations. The North Oshawa library also lends a smartphone video kit, a Yeti microphone and HDMI cables.

Hours change in the summer, during exams and around the holiday break. Check the library hours page before a late study session.
