Ontario Tech Gym Guide: CRWC, the Flex and Campus Ice Centre

Ontario Tech shares its north Oshawa recreation facilities with Durham College. The main building is the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which holds the Flex fitness centre, gyms, squash courts and an indoor track. The Campus Ice Centre, the indoor Campus Fieldhouse and Vaso's Field are close by. In 2026-27, full-time undergraduates pay two recreation-related ancillary fees each term: $118.51 for Sports and Recreation and $77.06 for the CRWC.

What's where

All four facilities are on the north Oshawa campus. Ontario Tech's student services page lists them as the athletics facilities you can use. The table sums up what the university and Durham College say about each one.

Ontario Tech's pages describe the CRWC's gyms differently. The building page mentions a large triple gymnasium, while the athletics FAQ counts five gymnasiums. Either way, you'll find more than one court space in the same building as the Flex.

What you pay for recreation

Recreation isn't a separate sign-up fee for most students. It's built into the ancillary fees on your Ontario Tech account. Full-time fees apply when you're registered in nine credit hours or more in a term.

The Sports and Recreation fee pays for programming such as fitness classes, nutrition and mindfulness sessions. The CRWC fee pays for sports and recreation programming, access to the facilities and the building's construction, upkeep and operating costs. It's charged each term you're registered, up to twice in one academic year.

  • Your Ontario Tech Ucard is your ID for campus facilities and services. It comes as a physical card or a digital one.
  • Memberships, fitness class spots, the FEMFLEX studio, personal training and intramurals are booked in the Campus Recreation portal. Sign in with your DC-OT student account.
  • The public pages don't list a separate gym-membership price for full-time students, so check what your account shows the first time you sign in to the portal.

Intramurals, extramurals and drop-in

Intramurals are student leagues, often with a recreational and a competitive division. Current sports are badminton, basketball, cricket, floorball hockey, ice hockey, pickleball, soccer and volleyball.

Registration runs in the first two weeks of September for fall leagues and the first two weeks of January for winter leagues. Every player registers and pays on their own through the Recreation Portal. Team requests are first come, first served, and free agents are welcome.

Extramurals are a step up. You travel to play other colleges and universities through Ontario Collegiate Recreation, part of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association. The current list is men's cricket, men's hockey, women's hockey, mixed dance and mixed volleyball. Drop-in sports are also offered if you'd rather play without joining a team.

Varsity sports and games

Varsity teams compete as the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS. The sports are badminton, basketball, curling, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rowing and soccer.

Tryout details are on the Ridgebacks website. Some tryouts happen before the fall term starts, so check early if you plan to try out in first year. All home games are free for Ontario Tech students with a student ID.
