Course requirements from Ontario

Schulich asks Ontario students for English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), and either Physics (SPH4U) or Biology (SBI4U).

If UCalgary can't make you an offer on your Physics mark, it uses Biology instead. An offer based on Biology is only final after you pass the Bioengineering Institute Summer course in the August before you start. Without MCV4U, you may still be considered at a higher average, but you'll take a different calculus stream. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The low 90s competitive average

UCalgary lists an estimated competitive admission average of the low 90s for Ontario, Alberta and BC high school applicants for the Fall 2027 intake. Schulich's admissions FAQ adds that the final admission average is set at the end of each cycle and changes with the competition, so treat the low 90s as a guide.

UCalgary doesn't publish an Engineering acceptance rate. Our University of Calgary acceptance rate page covers what it does publish. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator, keeping in mind that UCalgary counts program-specific courses, not your top six.

Which Ontario courses count

UCalgary doesn't use your top six. It averages approved, program-specific courses: four from Grade 11 for an early offer and five for a standard offer. The required Engineering courses come first.

UCalgary's approved Ontario list includes MHF4U, MDM4U and MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U, SPH4U, Computer Science (ICS4U), one 4U social studies course (CHI4U, CHY4U or CGW4U), 4U fine arts, any 4U second language, TEJ4M and any 4U course. You can't use two courses in the same subject, except the three math courses, and only one Grade 12 course per language. IB and AP equivalents are accepted, and every applicant must meet UCalgary's English language requirement.

Early and standard offers

UCalgary reviews your file each time new grades arrive. Early admission looks at four approved program courses from Grade 11. UCalgary makes fewer early offers, at a higher average. Standard admission uses five program courses from Grade 11 or 12, with at least one at Grade 12.

Schulich's FAQ says offers go out from November to July, and more offers can follow when final grades arrive in July, highest average first. Any offer still needs every Grade 12 requirement completed and the admission average kept up.

The common first year and choosing a major

Everyone starts in the common first year: 10 courses in design, math, science and engineering principles. Schulich builds class blocks, and an adviser enrols you in your block, so you take classes with the same group.

If you pass all 10 technical common-core courses, Schulich guarantees your first choice of major. Its majors page lists Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Geomatics, Mechanical, Oil and Gas, Software and Sustainable Systems Engineering. Energy Engineering is a separate transfer program for graduates of an approved energy-related polytechnic diploma, with its own spring intake.

Internships rather than co-op

Schulich builds work experience around internships. Every undergraduate must complete a Practical Experience Requirement, through the internship program or other work the Engineering Career Centre approves.

The Engineering Internship Program offers 12 to 16 months of paid work for upper-year students, usually after third year. It can be one employer or several back-to-back placements, in Calgary or abroad. In first or second year you can also try the Engineering Career Practicum, which includes short paid work experiences.

How to apply and key dates

For the Fall 2027 intake, apply between October 1, 2026 and March 1, 2027. March 1 is also the last day to change your program choices. There's no supplementary application for Engineering.

UCalgary's dates page, which doesn't print the year, lists March 15 for unofficial transcripts and documents, May 1 to accept an offer dated April 1 or earlier, and May 1 to apply for the first-year residence guarantee. High school courses must be finished by June 30 and final transcripts sent by August 1.

Transfer, Indigenous and Student Access routes

If you have 12 or more units of university courses, you apply as a transfer student. UCalgary estimates a 3.5 to 3.8 competitive GPA, uses up to 30 of your most recent units, and needs a C- or higher in any engineering courses you bring. Transfer applicants can't use the Biology route.

Indigenous applicants can use the Schulich Pathway for Indigenous students, which accepts some Grade 11 sciences and asks for a personal statement. The Student Access Process adds a review for applicants who faced barriers; you choose it in your application by March 1 and send a personal statement by March 15.

Tuition and scholarships

UCalgary charges tuition per course. Its calendar schedule, effective Spring Term 2026, lists $963.03 per 3-unit Engineering course for Canadian students and $4,148.73 for international students. Ten courses come to about $9,630.30 or $41,487.30 before general fees. UCalgary's cost estimator adds fees, books and housing.

The President's Admission Scholarship is automatic: $5,000, not renewable, for a final admission average of 95.00% or higher. Applications for UCalgary's Prestige Awards for incoming high school students close December 1. Read our University of Calgary guide for more on costs and awards.

For parents

Calgary Engineering decides on grades in five specific courses, and the estimate sits in the low 90s. A strong Physics mark matters, although Biology can stand in.

Your child won't pick a major until after first year, and passing all 10 technical courses guarantees the first choice. Compare other schools on our engineering requirements across Canada page.
