Course requirements

Manitoba students need English 40S, Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S and two more academic 40S courses. Ontario students need ENG4U, either Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), and two more 4U or 4M courses.

Only these four courses count toward the commerce average. That is different from Ontario schools that use a top six. Pick your two extra courses with care, because a weak one pulls the whole average down. Our course planner can help you check your plan.

The average you need

Asper asks for a minimum average of 85% over the four required courses, with no less than 70% in each. Manitoba also warns that applicants who meet the minimum may need a higher average if there are more eligible applicants than spaces.

The program page adds that meeting the requirements does not guarantee a spot, because admission is competitive and is at the discretion of the Asper School of Business. Manitoba does not publish an acceptance rate or a past cut-off for commerce. Use our Top 6 average calculator to track your grades, then work out the four-course average by hand.

Direct entry or advanced entry

If you have not been to college or university, or have finished fewer than 24 credit hours, you apply as a direct entry student. That is the route for almost every high school student.

Students with 24 or more credit hours from another school apply as advanced entry students. Some students take a first year in another faculty and then apply this way. It is a backup route if your high school average falls short, but it is also competitive.

Asper also runs joint programs with Assiniboine College, L'École technique et professionnelle and University College of the North. These let college students move into the BComm (Honours). They do not include co-op.

Supplementary application

Manitoba's direct entry page lists no essay, interview or supplementary form for commerce. Your four-course average decides your file.

The application fee is $100 for domestic students and $130 for international students. You apply on the University of Manitoba's own application, not through OUAC.

Dates for Fall 2027

The program page lists August 1 as the domestic deadline for fall direct entry, with applications opening in early September. International deadlines are earlier.

August 1 is late, so do not wait for it. Manitoba's scholarships use a March 1 deadline. For Fall 2026, students who applied by December 1, 2025 were also entered for one of ten $5,000 tuition prizes. Watch for a similar early date for Fall 2027. See our Canadian deadlines page.

First year

Year one is 30 credit hours. It includes ECON 1010 and ECON 1020, MATH 1524 (Mathematics for Management and Social Sciences), STAT 1000 or STAT 1150, a written English course and six credit hours of non-business electives.

You also start business courses right away: GMGT 1010 Business and Society, GMGT 2070 Introduction to Organizational Behaviour and MKT 2210 Fundamentals of Marketing. Foundation courses need at least a C, and you need a degree GPA of 2.00 to stay in the program and graduate.

Majors

The degree is 120 credit hours and usually takes four years. Majors include Accounting, Actuarial Mathematics, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Generalist, Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations, Indigenous Business Studies, Marketing, Strategy and Global Management, and Supply Chain Management and Logistics.

You can also add a minor from any faculty. Asper is AACSB accredited. It reports that 87% of the Class of 2024 found full-time work shortly after graduation.

Co-op

Asper co-op is optional. You apply after you start the degree, not from high school. Students are admitted once a year in the fall, and the first work term starts the next summer.

You need a GPA of at least 2.5 and between 45 and 81 credit hours when you start your first work term. Students admitted from September 2023 on must also take IDM 1010, Communications for Career Management. Co-op means three paid four-month work terms. Asper says 90% of co-op BComm grads were working full time three months after graduation. The co-op work term fee is $937.31 per work term.

Exchange and case competitions

Asper students can study abroad through an exchange program with more than 60 partner schools. Many students go in third or fourth year, and the credits count toward the BComm (Honours).

The school also supports case competitions and internships. Asper co-op works with more than 100 employer partners, and co-op students made up 57% of all BComm graduates. If you want work experience before you graduate, these are the main ways to get it at Manitoba.

Tuition for 2026-27

Manitoba charges by the credit hour. For 2026-27, Asper tuition is $213.09 per credit hour for domestic students and $895.68 for international students. Business students also pay an endowment fee of $26.44 per credit hour plus $1.25 per term, and a student organization fee of $0.51 per credit hour.

A full year is 30 credit hours. At the domestic rate, that works out to about $6,393 in tuition before the endowment fee and general university fees. That figure is our math, not a Manitoba quote.

Scholarships

Manitoba considers high school students for general entrance scholarships automatically if they apply by March 1. A 95% average earns $3,000, 90% earns $2,000 and 85% earns $1,000. Students with 95% or more may also be considered for the Isabel Auld, Chancellors' and President's Laureate awards worth $5,000 and renewable for three more years.

Asper lists its own awards for direct entry students, such as the HSBC Bank of Canada Award, the Logan Family Entrance Scholarship and the Morley and Rita Cohen Foundation Indigenous Leadership Scholarship. Amounts are not listed on that page.

For parents

The 85% floor applies to four courses only, so one weak Grade 12 class matters a lot. Help your child plan the two extra courses early.
