UManitoba Residences Compared: 2026-27 Costs and Halls

The University of Manitoba (UM) has three first-year residences on its Fort Garry campus: Pembina Hall, Mary Speechly Hall and University College. A fourth, Arthur V. Mauro, is for upper-year students or anyone 19 or older. For September to April 2026-27, a first-year room with the 10-meals-a-week plan costs from $10,780 (Mary Speechly double) to $15,720 (Pembina single). Applications open in late October, and a $1,000 deposit holds your room.

The four residences

University College is on the east side of campus, close to many Arts and Science buildings, with tunnel access to classes. The 8th floor of Mary Speechly Hall is substance-free.

2026-27 costs with the 10-meals-a-week plan

These totals come from UM's Residence Fee Calculator for September to April. Each includes the room, the 10-meals-a-week plan, an $85 residence programming fee and $85 tenant insurance. UM says the calculator is an estimate and the final cost can differ.

  • The 15-meals-a-week plan adds $508 a year and the 7-day unlimited plan adds $1,120 a year over the 10-meal plan.
  • Staying over the December holiday break is optional and costs $370.
  • Internet, utilities, tenant insurance and furniture are included. Parking, laundry, bedding and towels aren't.

How to apply

You don't need an offer of admission first. UM recommends applying as soon as you know you're interested.

  • Fall and winter applications open to new applicants in late October.
  • Apply in the residence portal and pay the application fee. Fees and deposits aren't refundable.
  • Watch for your Room Offer email, then choose a room and meal plan, agree to the contract and pay the $1,000 room deposit by Visa, Mastercard or Visa Debit.
  • There's no fixed deadline for new applicants. Once spaces for new students fill, UM keeps accepting applications onto a waiting list.
  • International students upload their study permit once it's approved.

Bursary, accessibility and contacts

  • A Student Residence Bursary for residents in financial need opens September 1 and closes October 15, with decisions by November 1.

  • St. Andrew's and St. John's colleges run their own residences on the Fort Garry campus; contact them directly.
