Course requirements

Lakehead's general rule for Ontario high school students is the OSSD and at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, including the program's prerequisites. For every Honours Bachelor of Commerce major, the prerequisites are English (ENG4U) and one of Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) or Data Management (MDM4U).

That is a gentle math rule. Data Management counts on its own. Even so, first year includes Business 1016 Business Mathematics and Business 1056 Introduction to Business Statistics, so keep your math skills sharp.

Lakehead lists the matching courses for every other province on the same page. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The average you need

Lakehead asks for a minimum 70% overall final average. It calculates admission averages using your top six Grade 12 U or M courses. Lakehead also says higher averages may be required for programs where demand from qualified applicants exceeds the spaces available.

Lakehead does not publish the average of students it admitted to commerce. Treat 70% as the floor. Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator, because that is the same top six method Lakehead uses.

No essay or interview

The commerce requirements list courses and an average only. There is no supplementary application, essay, interview or portfolio to get in. You apply for full-time study through OUAC.

Some extras do need an application. The Presidential Scholarship has its own application, and the International Dual Degree asks for a statement of interest. Those are optional.

Dates for Fall 2027

Lakehead has posted its 2027 cycle. Applications for Fall 2027 are open. The recommended deadline for Ontario high school applicants is January 15, 2027. Lakehead says most programs still accept applications after the recommended date if space allows.

Two other dates: the Presidential Scholarship application opens October 1, 2026 and closes April 25. Scholarship offers are made in early rounds in March and May and a final round in July. See our Ontario university deadlines page for the full OUAC timeline.

What first year looks like

Every commerce student takes the same introductory courses. Lakehead lists them on the program page.

Minors in accounting, business finance, human resources and industrial relations, business analytics and information systems, or marketing are open in third or fourth year.

  • Business 1011 Introduction to Management
  • Business 1012 Financial Accounting
  • Business 1033 Information Technology in Business
  • Business 1016 Business Mathematics
  • Business 1056 Introduction to Business Statistics
  • Business 1014 Foundations of Marketing
  • Economics 1010 Principles of Microeconomics and Economics 1011 Principles of Macroeconomics

Thunder Bay or Orillia

The program page lists both campuses and OUAC codes ATT and ATV. Check on OUAC which code matches which campus before you submit. The page marks Business Administration as the major available at the Orillia campus.

Lakehead says its Thunder Bay campus holds AACSB accreditation. Accounting majors meet the CPA Ontario prerequisite education requirements, and finance follows the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program.

Co-op is an option

Co-op is optional. Lakehead's co-op options page lists accounting, finance, human resources management and industrial relations, business analytics and information systems, and marketing, plus business administration and global entrepreneurship in Orillia. Work terms run from 4 to 16 months.

You apply for each work term in set windows. For example, summer work term applications run October 1 to October 31. Lakehead doesn't publish a separate co-op entry average on these pages, so ask the co-op office before you count on it.

Scholarships

Academic entrance scholarships are automatic for students coming straight from a Canadian high school. Lakehead works out scholarship averages three times a year. To renew, you keep an 80% or 90% average, depending on your offer, with a normal full course load each year.

The Presidential Scholarship is different. You apply with a reference, upload your documents by April 25, and selected candidates have a virtual interview. We don't write or edit scholarship applications for students. For Fall 2027 entry, the automatic tiers are:

  • 95% and up: $16,000 ($4,000 x 4 years) in the early rounds. It becomes free tuition if you keep a 95% top six in your final marks
  • 90.0% to 94.9%: $10,000 ($2,500 x 4 years)
  • 85.0% to 89.9%: $5,000 ($1,250 x 4 years)
  • 80.0% to 84.9%: $3,000 ($750 x 4 years)
  • Presidential Scholarship: up to two awards of $40,000 for students with 90% or more, by application

For parents

The entry bar is clear: ENG4U, one math and a 70% top six. Data Management counts, which helps students who don't take Advanced Functions. The deadline to aim for is January 15, 2027.

Scholarships start at 80% and are automatic, so a strong Grade 12 can lower the real cost. Read our Lakehead University guide for residence and campus details.
