UCalgary Student Centre, Schedule Builder and D2L: Registering for Courses
At UCalgary you register for courses in your Student Centre, which you reach by signing in to My UCalgary. You get a personal enrolment start time, build a timetable in Schedule Builder, then register from your shopping cart when your time opens. For Fall 2026, new first-year students registered on May 28 and 29, 2026. Your course materials then live in D2L, UCalgary's learning system. The Fall 2027 registration date for new students isn't published yet.

Student Centre or D2L: which does what
Think of the Student Centre as your official record and D2L as your classroom. D2L course sites are created automatically for the lecture and seminar sections in the university's class schedule.
| Task | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Find your enrolment start time | Student Centre | Shown on the homepage right after you sign in |
| Plan and register for courses | Student Centre and Schedule Builder | Schedule Builder opens from the green button at the top of the Student Centre |
| Swap, drop or withdraw | Student Centre | Schedule Builder can't swap or edit once you're registered |
| Check fees, pay and opt in to the UPass | Student Centre, under My Financials | The fall 2026 fee deadline was September 18 |
| See transfer credit | Student Centre | Your transfer credit report shows how earlier courses count |

Registration dates for 2026-27
UCalgary releases the schedule first, then opens registration by student group. You can add courses to your shopping cart as soon as the schedule is visible, but you can't register until your own start time.
| Group | Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 registration |
|---|---|
| Everyone: schedule available to view | March 3, 2026 |
| Continuing students | March 25 and 26, and March 30 to April 2, 2026 |
| Transfer and after-degree students | April 7, 2026 |
| New (first-year) students | May 28 and 29, 2026 |
| Open Studies students | July 21, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. |
How to register, step by step
Five courses (15 units) a term is the standard load to finish a degree in four years. Three courses (9 units) is the minimum for full-time, which matters for the UPass and some fees. You need six 200-level courses (18 units) before you can take 300- or 400-level courses. For advice on your program, book time with your faculty's academic adviser.
- Initialize your registration. In the Student Centre, on the Home tab under Enrolled Courses, pick the term and follow the link that says you haven't completed Registration Initialization. It appears after the schedule is released.
- Make your course list with the First-Year Degree Guide for your program. As a first-year student you can only register in 200-level courses.
- Open Schedule Builder and build a conflict-free timetable. You can save up to nine schedules as favourites, so keep backups in case sections fill.
- Add your chosen courses to your shopping cart and use Validate before your start time to catch problems.
- When your enrolment start time arrives, open the cart and complete registration. A course in your cart, even a validated one, doesn't hold a seat until you're registered.
- For multi-term courses, register in both the A (fall) and B (winter) parts and pick the same section. You only get credit if you complete both.
Add, drop and withdrawal deadlines
Dropping before the drop deadline removes the course from your transcript and you don't pay for it. After that, leaving a course is a withdrawal: a W appears on your transcript and there's no fee refund. Waitlists are cleared a week into term, and enrolment becomes first come, first served.
| Deadline | Fall 2026 | Winter 2027 | Fall 2027 (tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last day to join a waitlist | August 31 | January 10 | Not listed |
| First day of classes | September 1 | January 11 | September 1 |
| All waitlists cleared | September 8 | January 18 | Not listed |
| Last day to drop without penalty | September 10 | January 21 | September 9 |
| Last day to add or swap | September 11 | January 22 | September 10 |
| Fee payment deadline | September 18 | January 29 | September 17 |
| Last day to withdraw | December 4 | April 13 | December 7 |
- The fall 2026 term break runs November 8 to 14, and fall final exams run December 8 to 18, 2026. The winter term break is February 14 to 20, 2027.
- The 2027-28 dates come from a UCalgary calendar marked tentative and subject to change. Fall 2027 orientation is listed for August 26 and 27, 2027.
Waitlists and swaps
In Schedule Builder, the Results panel shows whether a course has a waitlist and how many spots are left. Tick the waitlist box on the confirmation screen after you click Get this Schedule.
Be careful if the waitlisted class clashes with one you already have. Schedule Builder won't show a schedule with a conflict. Use the edit or swap function in the Student Centre to join that waitlist; the Registrar warns that using swap the wrong way can keep you out of the waitlisted course.
Using D2L
Undergraduates sign in at d2l.ucalgary.ca, or through Quick Links in My UCalgary. Continuing Education students use a separate portal.
If a course isn't showing as a tile under My Courses on your D2L homepage, use the course selector at the top and search by course name, number or term. Lab and tutorial sections don't get their own D2L sites automatically. For password resets or access problems, contact UService (IT).
