SFU tuition and fees
2026-27 rates, term costs and payment steps
SFU's 2026-27 Fall calendar lists domestic tuition at $220.61 per unit. Fifteen units at that rate cost $3,309.15, our calculation before fees. The normal international rate for 2024-25 or later entrants is $1,262.88 per unit. Some courses cost more. Room and food are extra.

Count the units you will take in each term
SFU bills most undergraduate tuition by unit. Its current planning page uses five courses and fifteen normal-fee units for one four-month term. That's a stated example, not a rule that every student must take five courses. Check the unit value and fee level of each class in your schedule before you use a term estimate.
For that load, our calculation is $220.61 x 15 = $3,309.15 in normal domestic tuition. Newer international students have a normal-rate calculation of $1,262.88 x 15 = $18,943.20. Neither number includes student fees or housing. The official typical-cost page rounds its figures, so a rounded planning total shouldn't be read as an exact account balance.
A year at SFU can include Fall, Spring and Summer study or a work term. Don't call one four-month figure an annual fee. Our example stops at the first Fall term. It gives you an exact starting point without assuming a Spring levy or a summer course load. The SFU overview covers the wider degree choices.

Check the course level as well as the degree
Beedie's 200-, 300- and 400-level courses use a higher rate than ordinary courses. The same is true for listed higher-level Engineering and Computing Science courses. The premium is the full per-unit tuition rate for that course. Adding it on top of the normal rate would charge for the same unit twice.
A first-year student can take a mix of lower-level courses and courses in another school. That mix matters more than a blanket label such as Business tuition. We keep the comparison per unit so it doesn't imply that every course in a degree uses the premium. The Beedie admission guide owns program entry requirements.
Co-op also has a separate basis. The Fall calendar lists $932.08 for a co-operative education term for both domestic and international students. It isn't a fee added to every academic term. Course-specific supplementary charges can apply too. Check the registered course and work-term labels before using any of these rows in a full degree budget.
Domestic eligibility needs documents, not a B.C. address
The fee policy lists Canadian citizens and permanent residents among the domestic groups. It also lists certain refugee, diplomat and dependent categories. Living in B.C. alone doesn't establish that status. The checked undergraduate table has one domestic rate rather than a separate Ontario rate. Review the actual eligibility list if your circumstances need more than a citizenship check.
SFU uses your documented status at the applicable tuition deadline. Documents received after that deadline apply to later terms. The policy says earlier assessments won't be revised just because a document shows that status existed before. If you become eligible during your studies, tell SFU and submit the required proof before the next deadline.
International rates also depend on your first term of study. The Fall calendar separates earlier entry groups from 2024-25 or later entrants. An older student's normal rate can therefore differ from a new student's rate. Don't copy a friend's bill without checking the cohort and course level shown in your own account.

A tuition cohort isn't a promise to freeze the price
SFU's cohort policy normally keeps a student in a fee group for five academic calendar years. It now names Y010 for Fall 2026-Summer 2027 starters and Y011 for Fall 2027-Summer 2028 starters. That future group name is published. It doesn't give the group's future dollar rate or establish a five-year price guarantee.
The tuition calendar says international rates are reviewed each year and may rise by up to 6%, subject to Board approval. We haven't applied that limit to invent a future price. A permitted increase and an approved fee are different facts. Keep each year's published fee schedule with your budget, even when your cohort name stays the same.
Deferring admission, completing the original program and some returns after a withdrawal can change a cohort. The policy also says current Y006 students move to Y007 from Fall 2027. If you're returning or changing plans, ask SFU which group will apply. The newest entrant's rate isn't a safe substitute for that answer.

Annual insurance belongs in the budget once
The first Fall term carries the annual extended health and dental charge for eligible students. Our calculation is $145.04 + $219.04 = $364.08. The medical page describes September-August cover. A Fall starter shouldn't pay for that same year twice in a two-term budget. New Spring starters have different prorated amounts in the calendar.
Other coverage doesn't remove the charge on its own. SFU directs students to the plan provider's change-of-coverage process. Only after an approved opt-out should you exclude the charge from the amount you pay. Check the account and keep the approval. Distance, summer-start and other exceptions mean automatic enrolment isn't identical for every student.
New international students normally have four months of guard.me primary cover in their first term. The Fall calendar lists $281, separate from extended health and dental. Students living in B.C. for more than six months must also check MSP enrolment. Extended benefits and primary medical cover serve different needs. Our domestic example isn't a complete international insurance budget.

Room and food prices are quoted for a specific term
North Towers lists a Fall 2026 single room at $3,780 and its meal plan at $3,727. Our calculation for those two lines is $7,507.00. The residence table adds a mandatory $13 association fee and lists a $5 laundry card. The worked example includes both. Optional parking and any damage or late-return charges sit outside that example.
These prices cover September through December. East/West Towers and Courtyard have a different room price. McTaggart-Cowan and Townhouses list a choice of food plan. Compare the room you can actually accept. The SFU residence comparison keeps the building decision, and the meal-plan guide explains dining choices.
The Spring 2027 housing table lists January-April room and meal amounts, yet its meal footnote still says Fall term. That wording conflicts within the official page. Ask Housing to confirm the Spring food charge before turning it into an annual total. Burnaby residence planning also needs to fit your actual class campus and travel schedule, rather than a single assumed commute.

Use the worked total as a first-term starting point
Our first-year Fall-term total is $11,725.79. The calculation is $3,309.15 + $527.56 + $364.08 + $7,507.00 + $18.00. It combines fifteen normal-fee domestic units, the ordinary on-campus student fees, annual extended plans and the stated North Towers costs. No scholarship, bursary or opt-out reduces this example.
The total excludes admission and housing application fees, books, equipment, travel and personal spending. Those costs still need your attention. We haven't assigned a guessed book or personal allowance. Spring and Summer are outside the subtotal. SFU's typical-cost footnote says the Build SFU Levy rises on January 1, so doubling Fall's exact fees could misstate the next term.
Use the university cost calculator to compare your own offers and their periods. There is no saved SFU preset. Record whether a number covers one term, two terms or a year of insurance. Change the budget when your course assessment and room assignment arrive. A deposit already applied to either bill shouldn't appear as a new expense.

Plan tuition payments apart from residence payments
Fall 2026 tuition was due September 22. Spring 2027 tuition is due January 18. Residence had an earlier August 1, 2026 deadline for Fall and a November 30, 2026 deadline for Spring. Paying the tuition account doesn't complete a housing payment. Check both balances and the receiving account before moving money.
SFU accepts the listed tuition methods through goSFU, including Flywire and internet banking. Banking can take two to three business days to show in the account. The ordinary payment page has a deadline-payment-date exception if you can provide proof. The Flywire instalment plan separately requires payments to post by each due date. Follow the rule for the method and plan you use.
The Fall 2026 plan needed a balance of at least $1,000. Signup ran August 17-September 22. It split payments into three or four monthly instalments, based on activation date. The plan still charges 2% monthly interest on the unpaid balance. Missing an instalment can block Spring enrolment. These dated terms don't confirm a Fall 2027 plan.

Deposits change when you pay, not the cost of tuition
The current fee calendar lists a $250 domestic admission deposit and a $5,000 international deposit. Both credit tuition. They aren't extra tuition charges. The international deposit has a study-permit-denial exception with proof and a $150 processing fee. Read the offer deadline and refund terms before making a payment you might later need elsewhere.
Housing has its own $50 non-refundable application fee and $700 non-refundable confirmation payment. The confirmation credits the first term of a new contract. It shouldn't be added again to a residence total. Accepting the room also means accepting the contract. If you cancel, that contract sets any further liability, so don't assume losing the confirmation is the only possible cost.
SFU says scholarship and bursary money can't be used for the admission deposit. An expected award therefore doesn't solve an earlier cash deadline. The standing first-year housing guarantee requires a housing application and accepted admission offer by May 1, plus the listed eligibility rules. An offer for a room type doesn't guarantee your first building choice.

Dropping a class and receiving cash are separate steps
For standard Fall 2026 courses, the full tuition refund boundary was September 15, before tuition was due. The later September 22 and September 29 boundaries allowed only partial refunds. Spring 2027 has its own dated stages. Supplementary course fees can follow department rules. Read the refund date before dropping, rather than relying on the last academic withdrawal date.
A valid course drop can create an account credit. That doesn't mean the bank receives money the same day. SFU has separate routes for a Canadian bank account and an international refund through Flywire. Its refund schedule also distinguishes ordinary overpayments from award, bursary and loan credits. Apply through the route for your own credit.
The current Fall schedule says ordinary overpayment requests aren't processed in the first six weeks. Personal cheque payments have a clearance wait too. Extenuating-circumstance tuition requests are a separate review process, not a promise of approval. Keep enough cash for other commitments while the school checks eligibility and releases an approved refund.

Funding may arrive after a bill needs to be paid
SFU starts confirming government aid enrolment about two weeks before classes. Loan and grant payments typically start on the first day of the term. Applications may need four to six weeks of processing. Apply early through the lender that matches your province of residence. A pending application isn't money in the tuition account.
When SFU confirms enrolment, it deducts outstanding tuition and fees from expected aid. This can include more than the next payment-plan instalment. Check the remaining award and account balance after that deduction. Don't plan to spend the full loan deposit on living costs while the tuition balance is still unpaid.
Bursaries are open to eligible domestic and international students with assessed need. They normally require nine standard-graded units, with listed exceptions. SFU says payments usually arrive mid-term, after tuition is due. They supplement your funding and aren't assured every term. The SFU financial-aid section keeps the broader funding choices.

Fall 2027 has confirmed tasks but unconfirmed tuition prices
The Fall 2027 USES scholarship application closes December 15, 2026. Supporting documents are due January 31, 2027. SFU plans winner announcements from mid-March to May 2027. Published award values cover multiple payments, so a whole award isn't cash available for the first deposit. Our budget doesn't subtract an award you haven't received.
Housing applications opened October 1, 2026. The Fall 2027 fee page says room and meal prices will be posted by December 1, 2026, and confirms August 1, 2027 for residence payment. Those are real future facts. They don't establish 2027-28 tuition, student fees, insurance or a Fall 2027 tuition payment-plan schedule.
The checked sources don't confirm 2027-28 tuition, student-fee or insurance prices, or Fall 2027 tuition payment and refund dates. The Spring 2027 tuition calendar returned a login page, so its rates remain unverified here. Recheck February 1, 2027 and again before committing money. Keep the Canadian application deadlines beside the separate fee and housing tasks.
