Queen's Commerce supplementary application 2027: the Kira written and video answers, the February 15 deadline and the scoring rubrics

Every first-year applicant to Smith Commerce at Queen's must send a supplementary application. For the video, you get 2 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to speak. Apply by February 1, 2027. The supplement is due February 15, 2027, and Queen's won't take it late. Who has to do it

Queen's lists the supplementary application as mandatory for Smith Commerce (OUAC code QC). Its Ontario requirements page says so right under the course list. Smith says there are two parts to admission: your required courses and marks, and the supplementary application.

Queen's also asks for a supplement from on-campus Health Sciences and four-year Nursing applicants. If you apply to more than one of these programs, Queen's FAQ says you do a separate supplement for each one. Read our Queen's Health Sciences and Nursing supplement guide if that applies to you.

Upper-year students who want to transfer into Commerce do one too. Queen's says that version opens in the first week of March and is due June 15. This guide covers first-year entry from high school.

Is it still called the PSE?

Many students still search for the Queen's Commerce PSE, short for Personal Statement of Experience. Queen's current pages don't use that name. They call it the Supplementary Application, and they describe a Kira Talent assessment with one written and one video answer.

So old advice about a long essay you write at home and upload does not match the current process. The questions come up only when you start, and the clock runs while you answer. Our supplementary applications chapter compares this format with other Ontario programs.

What Queen's has confirmed for Fall 2027, and what it hasn't

The dates are confirmed. Queen's dates page says Commerce applications are due February 1, 2027, and the supplement is due February 15, 2027. Smith's own admission page gives the same two dates.

The format is not fully confirmed yet. Smith's supplementary page says: "We are finalizing the format, questions and assessment criteria for the 2026-27 Supplementary Application." It says full details will be posted before the application opens. Queen's FAQ and rubric pages both say they describe the 2026 intakes, with 2027 updates due by November 1, 2026.

That means the 10-minute, 335-word written answer and the 2-minute video are the latest published format, not a promise for your year. Read the Queen's pages again in November, before you log in to Kira.

How you get access

First you apply on OUAC. Queen's then emails an acknowledgement with your 8-digit Queen's student number, usually within 3 to 5 days. You need that number to register in Kira.

Queen's sends Kira invitations once a week. The FAQ says it can take up to 8 business days after the acknowledgement email to get yours. If it hasn't come by then, Queen's asks you to email suppapp@queensu.ca. Add @queensu.ca and @kiratalent.com to your safe senders list, and watch the email you used on your application.

Your SOLUS Student Centre has a To-Do List with your own due dates. Queen's says to check it, since it lists exactly what it still needs from you.

How the written and video answers work

You do the written answer first. Queen's latest FAQ gives you 10 minutes to write and submit it, with a 335-word limit. It warns that going over the limit will hurt your application.

Then you do the video. You get 2 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to answer. You don't have to do both parts in one sitting. You can stop after the written part and come back later for the video.

Queen's won't share the questions ahead of time, and each applicant gets questions at random. The FAQ says the questions won't ask you to list your activities, though you can mention an experience if it fits your answer. Queen's says the point is to meet you virtually and see how you think in real time.

How Queen's scores it

Queen's publishes the two rubrics in the table above. Each runs from Developing (1) to Exceptional (5). The written rubric looks at how you describe a challenge, your initiative, adaptability or persistence, your problem-solving and your reflection. The video rubric looks at your example, how you see other people's views, your part on a team and your reflection.

Review teams from Commerce, Health Sciences and Nursing, plus Queen's admission staff, score the answers. Queen's doesn't publish a weighting between grades and the supplement. It says the supplement is "very important" and one mandatory part of the assessment.

Queen's also explains when it is used. If your grades place you above a minimum average that Queen's sets, it uses your supplement to learn more about you. That minimum and the number of students chosen change each year. Queen's competitive average page lists 90+ as last September's minimum for Commerce consideration. Check your numbers with our Top 6 average calculator.

Outside help, AI and tools

Queen's application fraud page sets the rule. It says your application may be invalidated if any of it, or any material sent to support it, is "false or misleading or written by a third party." That can mean a rejected application, a cancelled offer or the end of your registration. Queen's says it may share that information with OUAC and other Canadian schools.

We did not find a Queen's page that names AI tools for this supplement. Don't read that as a green light. An answer written by a tool or another person is not your own, and the third-party rule applies. On spell checkers, the FAQ says Kira Talent does not recommend third-party extensions such as Grammarly, since they can cause technical problems.

Practice, tech problems and retakes

Practice is part of the Kira check-in, and it's required. Practice questions aren't scored, and you can repeat them as many times as you want. Use them to test your camera, microphone and connection.

Queen's says the whole thing takes about 30 minutes. It suggests a quiet place where you are alone, with a stable internet connection. If you need an accommodation, email suppapp@queensu.ca with what you need and any documents.

For tech trouble, Kira's help centre is open 9 am to 5 pm Eastern, and you can also email support@kiratalent.com or suppapp@queensu.ca. If Queen's asks you to redo a part, you get a new random question.

After you submit

Kira sends a confirmation email when you finish. Keep it. Queen's says your SOLUS To-Do List updates within 8 business days.

Sending it early does not mean an earlier offer. Queen's says it takes a long time to score the high number of supplements. Smith says offers start in early December and continue through May, and that all decisions are posted on SOLUS by May 21, 2027. The FAQ aims for mid-May. All documents, such as transcripts, are due March 31, 2027.

Mistakes Queen's itself warns about

Each of these comes from Queen's own pages.

  • Going over the 335-word written limit. Queen's says this will hurt your application.
  • Waiting too long. Queen's does not accept late Commerce supplements.
  • Missing the invitation. Add @queensu.ca and @kiratalent.com to safe senders.
  • Assuming one supplement covers two programs. Each program that needs one gets its own.
  • Using browser extensions during the assessment. Kira doesn't recommend them.
  • Sending work written by someone else. Queen's can invalidate the application.

Courses you still need

The supplement does not replace the course rules. From an Ontario school, Queen's asks for ENG4U, MCV4U and one more 4U math, with at least 80% in each of those three. Three more 4U or 4M courses round out your six. See the full picture on our Queen's Commerce requirements page and the Queen's Commerce pathway.
