Course requirements

Dal asks every Commerce applicant for Grade 12 academic English, Grade 12 academic math and three more academic subjects. Your admission average uses these five Grade 12 academic courses. Dal sets the Commerce minimum at 75%.

For Ontario students, English can be ENG4U, NBEU4U, ETS4U or EAE4U. Math can be Data Management (MDM4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). Commerce does not ask for pre-calculus, so MDM4U alone meets the math rule. Dal lists matching courses for every other province on the same page. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The 75% minimum and the competitive average

The 75% figure is a minimum, not a promise. Dal says Commerce may use a competitive average, and that meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission. Dal does not publish the competitive average it used in past years, and it does not publish a Commerce acceptance rate.

Commerce asks for more than Dal's Management degree, which lists a 70% minimum with the same five course pattern. Our Dalhousie acceptance rate page covers what Dal shares overall. Work out your own number with our Top 6 average calculator, then count only the five courses Dal uses.

Commerce Co-op or Management

Dal's Faculty of Management runs two undergraduate business degrees. The Commerce Co-op (BComm) gives you core business training with more focus on accounting and finance, plus three required paid work terms. The Bachelor of Management (BMgmt) is more flexible. It adds weight on entrepreneurship, government and non-profits, and its paid work term is optional.

Dal says both programs are accredited by AACSB. If you want a set co-op path and a career start at graduation, Commerce fits. If you want room to explore or to earn a second degree, look at Management.

How co-op works in the BComm

Co-op is built into the degree. Dal's sample timeline has first year as two terms of classes, with a Fundamentals of Work Integrated Learning course to prepare you. In second year you study in the fall, do your first work term in the winter and take classes in the summer. In third year you do your second and third work terms in the fall and summer. Fourth year is two terms of classes.

Work terms can be local, national or international. Dal names marketing agencies, accounting firms, banks, government and non-profits as common employers. You must pass a supervisor evaluation and a graded report to get credit. Dal reports that 92% of active job seekers found work within six months of graduation.

Majors and what you study

Dal offers seven Commerce majors: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, International Business, Managing People and Organizations, Marketing, and Supply Chain and Logistics Management. You can also skip a major and build your own mix. Dal suggests declaring a major by the winter term of second year.

Sample first-year courses include Business in a Global Context, Principles of Macroeconomics, Business Communication and Financial Accounting. Later courses include Finance I, Legal Aspects of Business, Artificial Intelligence for Business and Introduction to FinTech. Certificates include Financial Accounting, FinTech and Financial Innovation, Leadership, Management Accounting and Quantitative Finance. Dal has exchanges with 16 business school partners in 10 countries.

Fall 2027 dates

Commerce is not on Dal's list of programs with a fixed deadline for September 2027. Dal says those other programs can consider applications up to the start of classes where space is available. Because Commerce may use a competitive average, applying early is safer.

The key dates are the February 15, 2027 entrance award deadline, May 1, 2027 to accept your offer with a deposit and May 15, 2027 to apply for guaranteed residence. First-year course registration opens in June 2027. See all Canadian deadlines on our Canadian university deadlines page.

Tuition and co-op fees

Dal's 2026-2027 fee schedule lists Commerce at $344.60 per billing hour. That is $1,033.80 per course and $5,169.00 for a five-course term. With auxiliary, society and incidental fees, Dal estimates $7,133.76 for the fall term and $6,333.97 for the winter term. Dal notes you pay each course at its own faculty rate, so electives from other faculties may cost a little more or less.

Co-op adds a one-time $338 orientation fee and a $563 program fee for each four-month work term. The fee is charged even if you find your own job, and it is not refundable. International students also pay an international tuition fee on a separate schedule, so check Dal's fee pages if you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Entrance awards

Dal's General Entrance Award application for 2027-28 opens October 1, 2026 and closes February 15, 2027. You apply after you submit your admission application. One form puts you in the running for hundreds of awards, with values from about $1,000 to $80,000 over four years.

Most merit awards typically need an 80% average or 26 predicted IB points. Dal uses the five courses required for your program, and it bases decisions on the grades it has at the time. Later grades will not reassess your award.

For parents

Dal Commerce admits on grades. Your child needs Grade 12 English, one Grade 12 math (Data Management counts) and three other academic courses, with at least a 75% average. There is no essay, interview or supplementary form.

Co-op is part of every BComm, so your child will earn pay during three work terms. Budget for tuition, the co-op fees and residence. Remind your child to file the entrance award form by February 15, 2027. Compare other business schools on our Queen's Commerce and UBC Sauder pages, and read our Dalhousie guide.
