Course requirements

Dalhousie asks for Grade 12 English and Grade 12 academic math, each at 70% or higher, plus three more academic subjects. From Ontario, English can be ENG4U, ETS4U, NBEU4U or EAE4U. Math can be Data Management (MDM4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U).

Dal does not require a science, but it says it is highly recommended that you have one or more of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. First year includes Human Anatomy, so Biology in Grade 12 is a smart choice. Plan with our course planner.

The average you need

The posted minimum is a 75% overall average. Dal says this program may use a competitive average, and that meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission.

Dalhousie does not publish a kinesiology admission average or an acceptance rate. So aim well above 75% if you can. Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

No essay or interview

Dalhousie's kinesiology pages list no supplementary application, essay, interview or Casper test. Your grades decide your file.

That puts weight on your Grade 12 English and math marks. A mark under 70% in either one can stop your file even if your overall average is strong.

Dates for Fall 2027

Applications for Fall 2027 open October 1, 2026 on Dal's own site, not OUAC. Kinesiology is not on Dal's list of programs with a fixed deadline. For those programs, Dal says applications can be considered until classes start, where space is available.

Do not wait. The General Entrance Award deadline is February 15, 2027, and Dal urges high school students to apply early to meet it. Offers must be accepted with a deposit by May 1, 2027. The guaranteed residence deadline is May 15, 2027. See our Canadian deadlines page.

What you study

Dal calls kinesiology an interdisciplinary health science about human movement and its effect on health, performance and function. First year covers Human Growth and Development, Human Anatomy, Physical Activity and Health, Psychology and Physical Activity, and Philosophy and Ethics for Kinesiologists.

Dal says the degree covers anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, movement control and psychology, with electives that let you shape your upper years. Second year adds Physiology of Exercise, Kinesiological Anatomy, Introductory Biomechanics, Motor Control and Learning, and Introduction to Indigenous Health. Third year covers injuries, measurement, exercise testing for healthy people and physical activity for people with disabilities. Fourth year includes Cognitive Ergonomics and exercise testing for clinical groups.

Honours option

You can earn a BSc (Kinesiology) with Honours. Honours adds a full year research project in your final year.

Honours is useful if you plan on graduate school. It shows you can plan and finish a real research project with a faculty supervisor. Talk to the school about Honours early, so your third year courses set you up for the project.

Practicum, not co-op

Dalhousie's kinesiology page does not list a co-op stream. Instead, fourth year includes a Practicum in Kinesiology. The program page describes it as a 25-hour practicum in a professional setting with a qualified mentor. Dal notes many students put in more hours on site.

That is short compared with some other schools. If paid work experience matters to you, plan for summer jobs, volunteering or research roles as well.

Careers and further study

Dal lists careers such as athletic therapist, personal trainer, ergonomics consultant, health and safety manager, kinesiologist, exercise physiologist, rehabilitation specialist, and strength and conditioning specialist.

It also says the degree gives a strong base for later study in fields such as medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Many graduates go on to graduate or professional programs.

Those programs set their own prerequisites and averages. If you are aiming for physiotherapy or medicine, choose science electives with care and keep your university GPA high from first year. Dal's academic advisers can help you plan your electives once you arrive.

AP, IB and pathway programs

Students who take Advanced Placement courses may be eligible for university transfer credit at Dalhousie. IB students may receive credit for selected Higher Level courses. Credit can free up room in your timetable for electives or a lighter term.

If you do not meet the posted requirements, Dal says you may be eligible for one of its upgrading or pathway programs. That can be a route in if, for example, your Grade 12 math mark falls under 70%.

A simple plan for Fall 2027

Apply on Dal's site soon after October 1, 2026. Then complete the General Entrance Award application before February 15, 2027. Dal says award applicants typically have an 80% average, which is above the 75% kinesiology minimum, so strong marks pay off twice.

When your offer comes, compare it with your other schools and pay the deposit by May 1, 2027. If you want a guaranteed room in residence, apply by May 15, 2027. Keep your Grade 12 English and math marks above 70% all year, since your offer will depend on your final grades.

For parents

Dal's 75% minimum is lower than many Ontario kinesiology programs. But Dal says it may use a higher cut-off, so plan for a margin.

The real date to watch is February 15, 2027, for awards. Also read the Dalhousie admissions overview and our Dalhousie guide.
