2026-27 tuition by course group and student status

Domestic examples use 30 billing hours at one course rate. International figures are annual program tuition under the listed guarantee.

All amounts are CAD, before incidental, society, auxiliary, health and living costs. Domestic totals and conditional bursary reductions are our calculation. The Nova Scotia column assumes ten eligible three-credit courses and the full $1,283 bursary. These are not 2027-28 starting prices.

Worked first-year example: domestic Arts in a Howe Hall single

This is our calculation for an other-province Canadian student taking 15 Arts billing hours in each of Fall 2026 and Winter 2027, living in a named Halifax room.

Limited subtotal for the 2026-27 academic residence term, not a full cost of attendance. Uses the linked PDF fee basis, retains health coverage and includes the two application fees. Excludes books, travel, personal spending, extra course or payment charges and any separate room-deposit adjustment. Admission deposits credited to tuition are not added again. Confirm the room deposit's treatment before using this as a final housing bill.

Read the course rate before multiplying a degree price

For domestic students, the faculty teaching each course sets its tuition rate. An Arts student taking a Science elective pays the Science rate for that course. Most courses carry three billing hours. Dalhousie's typical full load is five courses, or 15 billing hours, per term. Your actual mix can differ from a table that puts every hour at one faculty rate.

The table uses 30 hours to make the course prices easy to compare. It doesn't say every degree has that first-year load. Engineering can have a different schedule. Some Science and Engineering courses use a higher rate because of auxiliary fees. Commerce also lists separate auxiliary charges. Check course codes and billing hours before treating any comparison row as your account balance.

A Truro degree price isn't a price for every Agricultural Campus credential. Animal Health, Veterinary Technology and technical programs have their own rows and course loads. Later-entry and professional programs also need their own schedules. Our Dalhousie Engineering guide and Commerce guide cover those admission routes. The Dalhousie hub keeps the wider university overview.

The Nova Scotia bursary changes net tuition, not the course rate

Eligible Nova Scotia students receive a provincial credit on their university account. The province lists $128.30 for each eligible three-credit course where tuition is billed by course. Our calculation for ten such courses is $128.30 x 10 = $1,283. The domestic course rate itself stays the same. An out-of-province Canadian student should use the gross domestic amount unless the bursary is approved.

The province defines residency for this program. A Nova Scotia student loan establishes it. Without that loan, its rules include attending high school in Nova Scotia just before university, or living in Nova Scotia when you applied. Planning to move into a Halifax residence doesn't establish that history. Ask Dalhousie to check the record if you believe you qualify but don't see the credit.

The bursary can apply alongside other scholarships or employer tuition support. It isn't a competitive Dalhousie entrance award. The conditional Nova Scotia column shows our calculation after the full credit; it doesn't promise each applicant that amount. Fewer eligible courses change the credit. Keep any residency review separate from the tuition deadline, and pay the assessed balance unless Student Accounts approves another arrangement.

An international guarantee has a program price and an entry year

The listed international amounts already represent tuition. Don't add them to domestic tuition as a surcharge. The guarantee covers six faculties: Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Management, and Science. It isn't a university-wide price for every undergraduate or professional program. Your program and the year you begin set the guarantee in your offer.

Dalhousie divides annual guaranteed tuition equally between Fall and Winter. Taking fewer courses doesn't automatically reduce that term's payment. Tuition can still be charged during a co-op term. Incidental fees, co-op fees, repeat courses and credits beyond the degree remain outside the guarantee. Spring or Summer study can add a charge. Read the conditions before comparing the guarantee with a domestic per-course budget.

The guarantee lasts for the standard program length plus one year. That extra year doesn't make an extra year free. Finishing early also doesn't erase the total program cost. Approved transfer credits may change the final guarantee after review. A program change can bring a new guarantee. Your final academic and account review matters as much as the headline annual amount.

Older students need their own cohort checked. The undergraduate tuition page points Fall 2024 and later entrants to the guarantee. The 2026-27 calendar says Fall 2023 and later. These statements don't settle the Fall 2023 boundary in the same way. Students in that cohort should ask Student Accounts to confirm their terms. Neither source gives a new Fall 2027 starting price.

Campus fees and health coverage need separate checks

Dalhousie charges incidental fees for student services, facilities, transit and other services. Campus and enrolment status matter. Full-time on the fee schedule means at least nine billing hours per term. Sexton adds a facilities charge for Engineering, Architecture and Planning. Truro has a separate slate. Moving between campuses can therefore change fees even if the tuition rate for a course stays the same.

The current PDF and HTML estimates disagree, as the table shows. Our worked example uses the linked PDF throughout. It doesn't mix its Fall charge with the HTML Winter charge. Truro also has an arithmetic issue: each source's displayed annual total is one cent below its own term sum. That small error is kept visible rather than turned into a new official quote.

The annual DSU extended health and dental charge is $491.89. It's already inside the full-time incidental estimate, so our example counts it once. International basic health cover is a separate $1,328.84 annual charge. The HTML fee page says international students are enrolled in both plans. Students with approved equivalent coverage can seek an opt-out; a plan at home doesn't remove a charge by itself.

There is another conflict for international society fees. Both linked fee PDFs list $5 per term, while the current HTML page lists $10 per term. Don't use either as a promised Fall 2027 charge. The international PDF already includes basic medical cover in its incidental total. Adding that plan again to the PDF total would count the same insurance twice.

A named room is a better budget line than a broad residence range

The example uses a Howe Hall single at $10,622 for the 2026-27 academic residence term. That is a published room quote, not an average or an offer of that room. The mandatory Freedom meal plan adds $6,232. Its Foodbucks are already included. The housing page says meal charges are selected with the room offer and added to the account alongside room fees.

The housing page opens with broad wording about included expenses and meals. Its detailed instructions and separate meal table still require a separate meal charge. Our example follows those itemised prices. Halifax's posted room fees already include the council fee. Truro adds council and laundry charges each semester instead. Don't transfer a Halifax total to Truro or add the Halifax council charge again.

Truro's traditional single is $7,779 before its mandatory Freedom plan and local extras. LeMarchant Place has different room costs and access to smaller block meal plans. Those block choices don't apply to every traditional building. Use the first-year residence comparison for room choices and the meal-plan guide for dining details.

Keep deposits separate from fees and from cancellation rights

The undergraduate fee regulations list a $500 domestic admission deposit and $2,500 for international undergraduate programs. These payments are credited to tuition, so they aren't added to the annual tuition in our example. Another section of the same calendar still refers to a $200 admission deposit. That official amount conflict needs checking against your admission offer, not a guessed compromise.

Residence has a separate $50 application fee and $500 room confirmation deposit. The room offer sets the due date; the FAQ says new students have ten days after their offer. The reviewed pages don't clearly state how this deposit credits the posted room rate. Our limited subtotal excludes a separate deposit adjustment. Keep that cash available and ask Residence to confirm how it appears on your account.

The current room-acceptance policy says the deposit is non-refundable once paid. It allows an appeal for documented events beyond your control, within 30 days of cancellation. The calendar instead says $250 is refundable before August 1. These rules conflict. Get written terms before paying. A later move off campus or choice of another university isn't a valid appeal reason on the dedicated policy page.

Fall 2027 has confirmed award and offer dates

The dated September 2027 admissions page lists February 15, 2027 for the entrance award application. Early awards must be accepted by January 31, 2027. Pay the admission deposit by May 1, 2027 unless your admission letter sets another date. General Entrance Awards also need acceptance by May 1. The calendar's general May 15 deposit wording belongs to a different published context; don't substitute it for your dated offer deadline.

For residence, that dated page confirms May 15, 2027. The current apply page also says May 15 for new students directly from high school, domestic or international, with a complete application. A specific room choice isn't guaranteed. The 2027 viewbook and residence FAQ still say May 1. Because those official sources differ, verify the deadline with Residence and aim to finish before the earlier date.

The checked tuition, incidental, room and meal schedules still publish 2026-27 prices. They don't establish Fall 2027 or Winter 2028 starting costs. The confirmed 2027 award and application dates don't change that price gap. Recheck on February 1, 2027 and again before accepting an offer, paying a deposit or signing housing terms. Those are our editorial recheck points, not university deadlines.

Automatic early awards and the General Entrance Award are different

Dalhousie's current 2027 viewbook describes automatic early entrance awards based on grade averages. It doesn't give a guaranteed average-to-dollar ladder. An early offer isn't a reason to skip the General Entrance Award application. That separate process can assess grades, need, leadership, community involvement and other criteria. The financial-aid owner covers the wider award choices.

The 2027-28 General Entrance Award application opened October 1, 2026 and closes February 15, 2027. It serves Fall entrants directly from high school, or mature students without transferable post-secondary study. Domestic and international students can apply. Typical academic eligibility is an 80% admission average or 26 predicted IB points, with a stated exception for First Nations and Indigenous Black Student Scholarships. Eligibility doesn't promise an award.

Use official first-semester grades and complete the application yourself in the portal. Later final grades won't trigger reassessment under the published rule. If an early scholarship and a General Entrance Award overlap, Dalhousie keeps the higher award under its stated comparison; it doesn't simply add both. Put only a confirmed award and its renewal terms in your budget. Don't subtract a possible four-year value from a first-year bill.

Funding must arrive in time to meet the assessed balance

Entrance awards reach the student account in two equal instalments, in mid-August and mid-December. Degree students need at least nine credit hours per term for payment; technology students need at least six. A remaining credit isn't immediate bank cash. Dalhousie allows a refund request after the last day to add classes. Plan how you'll pay urgent costs before then.

Most student loans are processed by the Registrar shortly before classes begin. Register in all required courses for the terms your loan covers to avoid delays. Approval and release are different steps. Track the loan in Dal Online. If funds won't arrive by the fee deadline, contact Student Accounts about your account. Don't treat an expected loan as an automatic payment extension.

The undergraduate bursary is a separate need-based application after enrolment. Its published Winter 2027 window is January 6 to 26, and Summer 2027 is May 3 to 25. Those dates don't confirm a Fall 2027 window. Decisions take about a month after the deadline, and awards are sent by e-transfer. Current-term aid cannot be assumed to clear old debt or cover your first deposit.

Pay early enough for the payment to post

The published tuition deadlines are September 22, 2026 and January 25, 2027. Canadian online bank payments can take two to three business days to appear. Allow that time before the deadline. Credit card payments can carry a separate convenience fee. Use the current balance in Dal Online after registration or a meal-plan change, rather than paying from a saved estimate.

The residence calendar allows payment in full or two instalments tied to the September and January deadlines. That doesn't establish a monthly undergraduate tuition plan. The reviewed payment page doesn't describe one. If you need different timing, ask Student Accounts for an approved arrangement before the balance is due. Late payments can bring a $50 fee and interest under the university's rules.

A parent helping with payment may need two separate permissions. TouchNet access permits payment and payment-history access. Discussing the student account with Student Accounts needs separate authorisation from the student. Keep school charges and personal living money distinct: Dalhousie says money sent to its account shouldn't exceed annual charges, and extra transfers can be held for future fees.

Course withdrawal doesn't cancel a residence contract

To stop tuition charges, drop the courses in Dal Online or give the Registrar written notice. Not attending class doesn't count. The regular tuition refund bands are in the table. Special sessions can use different dates. The Fall and Winter payment deadline is also the full-refund boundary for the listed regular courses. Incidental and society charges have their own cut-off.

International guaranteed tuition needs particular care. The refund PDF shows a full-refund boundary followed by no refund for the guarantee. Yet the same PDF says its schedule doesn't apply to guarantee programs and directs students to the guarantee page. Keep that internal conflict in view. Ask Student Accounts for a written calculation for your cohort and withdrawal; don't assume the regular half-refund band applies.

Leaving residence early normally leaves the full room and meal fee payable. The Residence Office can assess documented exceptions, including university withdrawal or an eligible off-campus co-op or exchange. You must complete its paperwork as well as any academic withdrawal. Before changing plans, ask both offices what remains payable. Enter confirmed figures in the cost calculator, including your own books, travel and living costs.
