Dal Online, Brightspace and First-Year Course Registration at Dalhousie
At Dalhousie you register for courses in Dal Online, and your courses run in Brightspace. Before either works, you pay your admission deposit in the Application Status Portal and activate your NetID. For 2026-27, Fall and Winter registration opened for most first-year students on May 30, 2026. Dal hasn't posted the 2027-28 first-year registration date yet; the Fall 2027 admission deposit is due May 1, 2027.

Which system does what
Your NetID is the username for nearly every Dal service, including Dal Online, myDal, Microsoft 365 email, Brightspace and computer labs. Dal sends key first-term information to your Dal email, so set it up early.
| System | What you use it for |
|---|---|
| Application Status Portal | As an applicant: reply to your offer, pay the admission deposit and find your Dal ID, which starts with B0 |
| My Account | Activate your NetID as a new student, reset your password and update your account |
| Dal Online | Registration status and course registration, your timetable, records, tax forms, awards and financial aid, and fee opt-outs |
| Brightspace | Dal's online learning management system for your courses |
| myDal | A signed-in Dal site where some offices, including IT services, post information that needs a NetID |
| DalU app | Getting involved on campus, with a NetID login |
Before you register: deposit, NetID and holds
You can't register until your admission deposit has gone through. New students pay it in the Application Status Portal after completing the Admission Offer Reply Form. It can take 2 to 3 days for the system to update.
Two to three days after Dal receives your deposit, activate your NetID on the My Account page using your Dal ID. Then check your registration status in Dal Online well before registration day.
- You can register if you're an active student, in good academic standing or on probation, with no holds and the correct admissions status.
- Fix holds early. A hold can block online registration.
- For help setting up your account, the IT Help Desk is at 902-494-4357 or helpdesk@dal.ca.
How first-year registration works
Dal runs a First-Year Registration 101 session on choosing courses and building your schedule, with a video version. Each faculty posts a course planning sheet for first year, and there's a blank schedule worksheet. Truro Start and Truro engineering students use the Faculty of Agriculture planners.
You register in Dal Online. The Dal Online Help Centre, which needs your NetID, has step-by-step instructions and videos.
- Some classes use wait lists once they're full.
- Engineering and Computer Science group some classes into blocks to simplify registration.
- Multi-term classes run September to April. Take extra care if you drop one.
- Some courses, often called Open Learning, have non-standard dates and different add and drop deadlines.
- The Schulich School of Law has its own add and drop dates.
2026-27 dates that cost money or grades
These are Dal's undergraduate dates for courses on standard term dates. The fall add deadline also matters for fees, because it's the last day for a complete refund and to pay without a $50 late registration fee.

Adding or dropping after the deadline
Once the add deadline passes, you change courses with the Undergraduate Class Add/Drop form. Get each professor's signature, then email the form to the Registrar's Office or take it to an Enrolment Services Centre. Ask Student Accounts about late fees. The same form can work if a hold blocks online registration, though some holds still stop course additions.
Talk to an academic adviser before you drop. Drop dates affect refunds and whether a W appears on your record.
Fee opt-outs you make in Dal Online
Dal Online is also where you ask to waive certain fees. Use the Additional Fee/Waiver Application Form to opt out of the orientation fee if you can't take part. If you have equivalent health coverage, you can apply there to opt out of the DSU health and dental plan, which costs $491.89 for 2026-27.
International students are automatically enrolled in both the DSU plan and the International Student Health Plan, which costs $1,328.84 a year. You can opt out of the international plan only with proof of equivalent insurance.
