Published minimums establish eligibility, not the average that will necessarily win an offer. Nursing, Engineering, co-op, competitive business programs, Physical and Health Education, dual degrees, and other limited-enrolment programs can sit well above a university's general minimum.
Residence guarantees and Fall 2027 housing status
Residence is a separate application with its own eligibility, form, deposit, accessibility-document, room-selection, and cancellation rules. A guaranteed bed does not guarantee a preferred building, room type, roommate, or meal plan.

Co-op and work-integrated learning models
A university can offer direct-entry co-op in one degree, a competitive application after first or second year in another, and only internships or placements elsewhere. Admission to the academic program, entry to co-op, and employer hiring are separate decisions.

Compare whether a work term is required or optional, when students apply, the minimum continuation average, the number and length of placements, fees, international work authorization, and what happens if a job is not secured.
How to choose a smaller Ontario university
- Build a program shortlist before a university shortlist. The same university can have 70% minimums in one area and much higher competitive requirements in another.
- Confirm every Grade 12 prerequisite and any minimum course grade on the live program page before choosing courses or submitting OUAC.
- For Fall 2027 Group A applications, work backward from the January 15, 2027 OUAC deadline. Group B and program-specific deadlines can differ.
- Decide whether co-op must be direct entry. Brock and some program-specific streams can start at admission, while other options require a later competitive application.
- Compare the campus attached to the program. Trent, Ontario Tech, Lakehead, and Algoma operate programs across more than one location, and housing is not interchangeable.
- Treat residence admission as a second application. Submit the housing form, deposit, and accessibility documents by the housing office's current deadline.
- Compare the full cost: tuition, compulsory fees, residence, meal plan, transportation, books, and any co-op charges—not only the advertised tuition line.
- Keep an academic and housing fallback. Minimum admission requirements, co-op entry, residence guarantees, room preferences, and employment are separate decisions.
The most useful shortlist is program-first. Open the current academic calendar, residence page, co-op sequence, tuition schedule, and official campus map for every option before deciding that a smaller campus is automatically a better or easier fit.
