Study in Canada from the UAE: British, American, Indian, IB and national curricula, English and costs
In the UAE, your child's curriculum matters more than the country. Canadian universities assess A Levels, a US diploma, CBSE or CISCE, the IB and the UAE Secondary School Certificate under different rules. Guelph, for example, asks for at least a B+ overall on the UAE certificate and points to separate British, Indian, American, Canadian and IB requirements. The UAE isn't on U of T's or McGill's English exemption lists, but school-based routes at UBC and TMU can waive a test. For a permit applied for on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC asks one student to show $23,448 for living costs plus tuition.

Start with the curriculum, not the country
UAE schools teach many different curricula, so a Canadian university asks which one before anything else. Guelph's UAE entry shows this: it sets a B+ minimum for the UAE Secondary School Certificate, then points to its separate British, Indian, American, Canadian-curriculum and IB requirements.
So the first job for a family is to name the curriculum correctly on the application and send the matching documents. Our Middle East guide covers national curricula across the Gulf, document attestation and translation in more depth.

American-curriculum schools in the UAE
A US diploma earned abroad is read much like one earned in the US, as long as the program is accredited by a US regional agency. McGill says a student completing an accredited US program outside the US must say so on the application, falls under McGill's deadlines for high schools outside Canada and the US, and uploads transcripts instead of self-reporting grades.
UBC asks for graduation from an academic or college-prep program at a regionally accredited school, senior English, three years of math to the junior level and at least 70% in junior or senior English. SAT and ACT are optional at UBC. Our US applicant guide has the detail on GPA and testing.

British, Indian and IB schools
Students at British-curriculum schools apply with GCSEs and A Levels (or predicted A Levels). Universities read them under their British or GCE rules, and programs set their own A Level subject prerequisites.
If your child is at a CBSE or CISCE school, universities read the results under their India rules, with Class XII predicted and final marks. Our India guide explains Class X and XII documents, board names and timing, all of which apply in the UAE too.
IB students are read under each university's IB rules, on predicted and then final results. UBC accepts IB English A at 5 or higher toward its English standard.

English tests from a UAE school
The UAE isn't on U of T's list of countries where four years of English-medium study waives the test, or on McGill's list of countries where English is the acknowledged primary language. So the country alone won't exempt your child.
The school can. TMU doesn't require a test after 4 years of full-time high school in a school where English is the primary language of instruction. UBC accepts four years at a Council of International Schools member school, four years at a US regionally accredited school, an A or B in A Level English, IB English A at 5 or more, or 75% in senior English at a CBSE- or CISCE-affiliated school. UBC's deadline for English documents or a waiver request is February 15.
If none of these fits, book a test early. Our English tests guide compares minimum scores.

What it costs, and scholarships
International tuition is the biggest cost for a family in the UAE. Statistics Canada's preliminary 2026-27 average for international undergraduates is $42,062 across Canada, from $50,088 in Ontario to $23,160 in Manitoba. The table above adds IRCC's living-cost amount to show what a first year can take.
Government student aid such as OSAP is only for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons, so scholarships come from universities and private donors. The scholarship tables on this page come from our Scholarship Finder and show awards open to international students right now, with each university's own link and the date we checked it. Some are automatic when your child applies; others need a separate application or a school nomination.

A Fall 2027 timeline
Start in the year before your child finishes school. UBC's application for September 2027 opens in early October 2026, and international applicants who want the International Scholars awards must apply and submit the award application by November 15, 2026. U of T recommends applying by November 7 and closes most programs on January 15 for 2027 admission. UBC's general deadline is January 15, 2027.
Ontario universities take applications through OUAC, and each university sets its own dates for students outside Canada. Our OUAC Group A and Group B guide explains which application your child uses.
- September to November 2026: shortlist programs, check prerequisites, book an English test if needed.
- By November 15, 2026: UBC applications for International Scholars consideration.
- By January 15, 2027: U of T and UBC deadlines for most programs.
- February 15, 2027: UBC's deadline for English documents or a waiver request.
- Spring 2027: offers arrive; accept one, then ask the school about the PAL.
- After the PAL: apply for the study permit with proof of funds.

Study permit from the UAE: what's current
The permit comes after admission. Once your child accepts an offer, the university issues a letter of acceptance and helps them get a provincial attestation letter, or PAL. The PAL goes in with the study permit application. A PAL is only valid for the cap year it was issued in, so a student applying in 2027 needs one issued in 2027. IRCC hasn't published the 2027 cap details yet.
There's no fast-track stream any more. Canada ended the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024, so students from the UAE use the regular study permit stream. The permit fee is $150 and biometrics cost $85.
For an application made on or after September 1, 2026, outside Quebec, IRCC asks one student to show $23,448 for a year's living costs, plus first-year tuition and travel. Bank statements should cover the past six months, including the month of the application or the month before, and show where the money came from. A parent who pays should add a letter with their job, relationship to the student and the amount they'll provide.
During classes, eligible students can work off campus up to 24 hours a week, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. IRCC expects the family to cover costs without that income. Our guide for international families covers custodians for students under 17 and health insurance.
