Study in Canada from Pakistan: HSSC and Intermediate results, English tests, costs and study permits
Canadian universities admit students from Pakistan on the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or Intermediate Examination Certificate. They assess your Grade XII predicted or final marks, plus the subjects each program requires. Laurier converts an A1 to 95% and an A to 81%, and SFU asks for at least 60% in senior math. Pakistan isn't on U of T's or McGill's English exemption lists, so most students take an English test unless a school-based route applies. For a permit applied for on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC asks one student to show $23,448 for living costs plus tuition.

Which Pakistani results Canadian universities accept
The standard route is the Higher Secondary School Certificate, also called the Intermediate Examination Certificate, earned after Grade XII. Laurier, SFU, Western, Guelph and Concordia all name it. Universities decide on Grade XII marks, so your child applies with predicted or interim results and sends final results later.
Western also asks for Standard X results. Laurier uses all senior academic HSC subjects in the admission average, and SFU calculates admission on senior academic subjects. Guelph describes the bar as strong excellent to outstanding grades, which tells you these are competitive admissions, not automatic ones.
If your child takes Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel A Levels instead, universities assess those under their separate British-curriculum rules. Guelph's international page, for example, lists British-patterned education on its own. Our credential evaluation guide explains when an outside evaluation is needed.

How Pakistani grades convert
Pakistani boards grade on a pass mark of 33%, while Canadian schools usually pass at 50%. So a percentage doesn't carry over directly. Laurier publishes its conversion: A1 counts as 95%, A as 81%, B as 73%, C as 66%, D as 59% and E as 52%. It converts percentage grades on transcripts the same way.
SFU states its math minimum on its own scale: at least 60% in senior math, based on a 50% pass. Treat any single conversion as one university's rule, not a national standard. If your child's marks sit near a cut-off, ask each university how it will read them.

Match subjects to program prerequisites
Programs need specific senior subjects, not just a good average. Laurier maps its prerequisites directly to Pakistan's Grade 12 courses: Grade 12 English for senior English, Grade 12 Mathematics for its algebra, calculus and statistics prerequisites, and Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry for those sciences.
SFU shows how much this varies by faculty. Computing Science needs senior math plus one of biology, chemistry or physics. Engineering Science needs senior math, chemistry and physics. Many arts programs need only the general requirements, and SFU's Beedie business school adds a supplemental application.
- Engineering and computer science: Grade 12 math and physics, often chemistry.
- Health and life sciences: Grade 12 biology and chemistry, often math.
- Business: Grade 12 math at most schools.

Documents, verification and WES
Most universities start with uploaded copies and ask for official documents after an offer. Laurier needs final official HSC results to clear conditions, and says HSC results can be verified online if your child gives the roll number and application number.
Western goes further. After your child accepts an offer, the school must send official documents directly to WES Canada for a document-by-document report, and Western says it can cancel an offer if the final documents don't match what was submitted. Everything must be in English, with notarized literal translations for anything that isn't.
Don't order a WES report before a university asks for one. Requirements differ, and the wrong report type costs time.

English tests for students from Pakistan
Pakistan isn't on U of T's list of countries where four years of English-medium study waives the test, or on McGill's list of countries where English is the acknowledged primary language. Plan for a test unless a school-based route fits.
Some routes depend on the school, not the country. TMU doesn't require a test after 4 years of full-time high school in a school where English is the primary language of instruction. UBC accepts four years at a Council of International Schools member school, and a grade of A or B in A Level English Language or Literature. UBC's deadline for English documents or a waiver request is February 15.

What it costs, and scholarships
International tuition is the biggest cost for a family in Pakistan. Statistics Canada's preliminary 2026-27 average for international undergraduates is $42,062 across Canada, from $50,088 in Ontario to $23,160 in Manitoba. The table above adds IRCC's living-cost amount to show what a first year can take.
Government student aid such as OSAP is only for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons, so scholarships come from universities and private donors. The scholarship tables on this page come from our Scholarship Finder and show awards open to international students right now, with each university's own link and the date we checked it. Some are automatic when your child applies; others need a separate application or a school nomination.

A Fall 2027 timeline
Start in the year before your child finishes school. UBC's application for September 2027 opens in early October 2026, and international applicants who want the International Scholars awards must apply and submit the award application by November 15, 2026. U of T recommends applying by November 7 and closes most programs on January 15 for 2027 admission. UBC's general deadline is January 15, 2027.
Ontario universities take applications through OUAC, and each university sets its own dates for students outside Canada. Our OUAC Group A and Group B guide explains which application your child uses.
- September to November 2026: shortlist programs, check prerequisites, book an English test if needed.
- By November 15, 2026: UBC applications for International Scholars consideration.
- By January 15, 2027: U of T and UBC deadlines for most programs.
- February 15, 2027: UBC's deadline for English documents or a waiver request.
- Spring 2027: offers arrive; accept one, then ask the school about the PAL.
- After the PAL: apply for the study permit with proof of funds.

Study permit from Pakistan: what's current
The permit comes after admission. Once your child accepts an offer, the university issues a letter of acceptance and helps them get a provincial attestation letter, or PAL. The PAL goes in with the study permit application. A PAL is only valid for the cap year it was issued in, so a student applying in 2027 needs one issued in 2027. IRCC hasn't published the 2027 cap details yet.
There's no fast-track stream any more. Canada ended the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024, so students from Pakistan use the regular study permit stream. The permit fee is $150 and biometrics cost $85.
For an application made on or after September 1, 2026, outside Quebec, IRCC asks one student to show $23,448 for a year's living costs, plus first-year tuition and travel. Bank statements should cover the past six months, including the month of the application or the month before, and show where the money came from. A parent who pays should add a letter with their job, relationship to the student and the amount they'll provide.
During classes, eligible students can work off campus up to 24 hours a week, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. IRCC expects the family to cover costs without that income. Our guide for international families covers custodians for students under 17 and health insurance.
