For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). Universities review school grades and predicted levels, since 2027 results are due July 14, 2027. Many published minimums sit near level 3 per subject or an average of 4. Plan for English proof too.

Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most university rules below carry no intake year. They're current rules used for 2027 planning. HKEAA's 2027 exam dates are marked tentative, as HKEAA marks them. Fee tables and award amounts keep their own year labels.

How the HKDSE is built

HKEAA runs the exam. You take it after six years of secondary school: three junior years and three senior years. Most school candidates sit four core subjects. These are Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and Citizenship and Social Development, called CSD. They add two or three electives.

Electives come from three groups. Category A holds senior secondary subjects such as Physics or Economics. Category B holds Applied Learning subjects. Category C holds other languages. This split matters in Canada. UBC, McGill, Queen's and SFU all say Category B can't count. Laurier also leaves Category B electives out.

CSD replaced Liberal Studies as a core subject. HKEAA says the change applies from the 2024 exam onward. CSD isn't graded on levels. It's reported as Attained or Unattained. Some Canadian pages haven't caught up. McGill's HKDSE page still lists Liberal Studies among the core subjects. Send the subjects printed on your record and let McGill match them.

Mathematics has a compulsory part and two optional extended modules. Module 1 covers Calculus and Statistics. Module 2 covers Algebra and Calculus. Many science, business and engineering routes in Canada name one of these modules. Check this before you fix your S6 timetable. A missing module is harder to repair than a weak mark.

What the levels mean

Category A subjects are reported in five levels, from 1 to 5. Level 5 is the highest. The top group within level 5 gets 5**, and the next group gets 5*. Work below level 1 is Unclassified. Applied Learning subjects use another scale. HKEAA treats Attained with Distinction (I) as comparable to level 3. Attained with Distinction (II) is comparable to level 4 or above.

Hong Kong's own universities use a general entrance rule called 332A. It covers the four core subjects, with Attained in CSD. HKEAA says it applies from the 2024/25 intake. That's a local rule. Canadian universities write their own level rules. Some also turn levels into percentages.

Laurier publishes one such table. It treats 5* and 5** as 95%, level 5 as 88%, level 4 as 80% and level 3 as 71%. Level 2 becomes 63%. That table is Laurier's alone. Another university may read the same certificate in its own way. Don't convert your levels when a form asks for an average. Report the levels and let each school do the maths.

Key HKDSE dates for 2027 entry

HKEAA's calendar for the 2027 exam is posted. English speaking exams are set for March 9 to 18, 2027. Written exams for Category A subjects run from April 6 to May 3, 2027. Results for all categories are due July 14, 2027. HKEAA marks each of these dates as tentative.

Canadian deadlines come much earlier. McGill's application deadline for HKDSE students is January 15, with supporting documents due March 1. You'll apply long before your exam results exist. McGill and Queen's ask for predicted results. Western can use in-progress results. Your teachers' predictions carry real weight. Ask how your school sets them and when it sends them.

U of TCompleted diploma with at least two electives from Categories A or C. Module 1 or 2 is required where a program lists Calculus. No level minimum on the country entry. Engineering has its own rules.
UBCStanding in four core subjects and two electives. Category B isn't accepted. Past years needed an average of 4.The average of 4 describes past years, not a 2027 cut-off. Degree rules differ.
McGillFour core subjects plus two or three Category A or C electives. Level 3 or better in each subject is the minimum. Most programs need more. Management needs Core Mathematics at level 4 or higher. Page still says Liberal Studies.
Queen'sS6 passes in four compulsory subjects and two A or C electives. Competitive range near an average of 4.Smith Commerce needs Mathematics at level 5 with Module 1 or 2. Engineering rejects Combined Science.
WaterlooCompleted HKDSE. Computer Science and Mathematics need Module 2 at level 5 and an overall average of 4.Engineering, Science and Arts use level 3 subject floors with an average of 4. Forms and interviews vary.
WesternCertificate listing all subjects. Conditional offers can use in-progress results.Final records come from HKEAA. Engineering needs Chemistry, Physics, Math and Casper.
SFUOverall grade of about 4, worked out on three core subjects and two electives, since CSD is left out from 2024.Mathematics must be at least level 2. Faculty prerequisites still apply.
YorkNames the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education as the Hong Kong credential. The country entry gives no level or subject rule. Use the program page.
LaurierSix senior academic courses: all core subjects and two electives outside Category B. Reads level 4 as 80%.Final official HKDSE results clear conditions. English proof may apply.
AlbertaAccepts HKDSE results for graduates from 2012 onward. HKALE applies before 2012.This list gives no level minimum. Check faculty requirements.

The same two numbers keep coming back. A level 3 floor per subject and an average near 4 show up again and again. Treat them as entry points, not targets. McGill says most programs are more competitive. Queen's says required grades change by program and by year. UBC's average of 4 describes past years. None of these pages gives a 2027 cut-off.

Waterloo is the most exact. Its Computer Science and Mathematics pages need Core Mathematics with Module 2 at a final level of 5. Both ask for Core English and a final overall average of 4. Mechanical Engineering needs Module 2, Physics and Chemistry at level 3 each, plus English at level 3. Engineering applicants also complete an Admission Information Form and an online interview. Its program pages say students are considered individually. It won't grant transfer credit for HKDSE work.

Queen's names subjects by program code. Smith Commerce wants Compulsory Mathematics with Module 1 or Module 2, at a minimum Mathematics level of 5. It also needs a supplementary application. Health Sciences needs Biology, Chemistry and Compulsory Mathematics, and it won't accept Combined Science. Nursing adds English Literature and a minimum English level of 4.

Subject prerequisites to plan now

Pick electives with your degree in mind. Engineering is the strictest case. Queen's, McGill, Waterloo and Western all name Physics and Chemistry. Queen's and Waterloo also require Module 2. Queen's says Combined Science won't meet its engineering rule. If you take Combined Science, talk to your school soon.

Science degrees often need two lab sciences. McGill's life sciences group asks for two of Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Waterloo's Honours Science asks for two of those three at level 3. Queen's Life Science and Biochemistry needs Biology and Chemistry plus Module 1 or 2. Western's Medical Sciences needs Biology, Chemistry and Math.

Business routes lean on maths. McGill Management needs Core Mathematics at level 4 or higher. Queen's Smith Commerce needs level 5 with an extended module. SFU's Beedie school asks for senior Mathematics and a supplemental application.

Arts degrees ask for less. McGill Arts and Queen's Arts list no subject prerequisites. Waterloo Honours Arts still wants Core English at level 3 and an average of 4. U of T has a wider rule. Every program there needs a senior English course equal to Ontario's ENG4U. That mark counts in your admission average.

Laurier matches Hong Kong subjects to its own course names. Its calculus course equals the Compulsory Part plus Module 2. Its statistics course equals the Compulsory Part plus Module 1. U of T accepts A-Level Mathematics or AP Calculus if you aren't taking Module 1 or 2.

Predicted grades and documents

McGill reviews your transcript, including mid-year Grade 12, with predicted HKDSE results. Queen's asks for transcripts of all years with interim results and predicted HKDSE grades. Western uses mid-year or in-progress results and may make a conditional offer.

An offer isn't the finish line. McGill expects you to keep your level of work through the end of school. Laurier needs final official HKDSE results to clear conditions. Western wants final records sent by the Hong Kong exam authority. UBC accepts photocopies only when your principal, head or counsellor certifies them. UBC and Western both reject notarized copies.

Plan for the gap between July results and September. Read each offer's conditions closely. Ask admissions what happens if one subject falls short. Don't count on an HKEAA re-checking or re-marking request to finish in time. Western also wants everything in English. If a record isn't in English, it asks for a notarized literal English translation.

English proof: does HKDSE English replace IELTS?

None of the university pages checked here lists an HKDSE English Language level as a way to skip a test. That includes McGill, UBC, U of T, Queen's, SFU, Waterloo and McMaster. Your exemption depends on where you studied and in what language.

McGill is the clearest. Hong Kong isn't on its list of places where English is the acknowledged primary language. McGill also says an English-medium school in a non-English country doesn't exempt you by itself. So plan on a test or another listed qualification for McGill. IELTS Academic needs 6.5 overall with no part below 6.0.

Other schools look at your school's teaching language. Queen's exempts students who studied full time in English for the most recent three years. UBC accepts four years at an eligible international school that teaches in English, in a country where English isn't the main language. A bilingual school means a UBC waiver request. SFU accepts the last four years at a recognized international school taught in English, with 70% in senior English. McMaster may exempt four years at an accredited English-medium secondary school. It says that exemption isn't automatic.

U of T's two exemptions both rely on four years in Canada or in a country where English is dominant. Waterloo asks for a test unless your four most recent years were in an English language school system. Ask Waterloo how it treats your school.

HKEAA publishes an IELTS comparison. In pooled 2019, 2023 and 2025 data, level 4 in English Language matched an average IELTS overall band of 7.12. Level 3 matched 6.29. That's a research average, not a waiver. No university page here accepts it in place of a score.

Watch test dates as well. UBC wants scores dated January 1, 2025 or later for 2027/2028 entry, and its English proof is due February 15. SFU ignores tests taken more than 24 months before you apply. Compare score rules in the English test guide.

Scholarships: open dates and passed dates

UBC's International Scholars Program is open for September 2027. Applications opened October 5, 2026. You apply to UBC first, then arrange a school nomination and a teacher referee. The award application is due November 15, 2026. Your nominator and referee should submit a few days before that. Required documents are due January 31, 2027. That date replaces the one in UBC's general next-steps email.

The program looks for top grades, leadership and significant financial need. Its need-based awards include the Karen McKellin and Donald A. Wehrung awards. You must also meet UBC's English standard. Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science and some dual or joint degrees aren't eligible.

UBC's merit awards are separate. For 2026/2027, its International Major Entrance Scholarship is valued at CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 a year. The Fall 2027 value is pending.

U of T's Pearson scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. Each school can nominate one student a year. For September 2027, nominations closed October 9, 2026, and the admission deadline was October 16. Both have passed. The November 6, 2026 deadline only serves students who finished those steps.

McGill lists January 21 for its Major Entrance Scholarship application and documents. Compare other awards on the international scholarships page.

Tuition you can plan around

Use real fee tables and note their year. Queen's lists 2026-2027 international tuition for Arts and Science, outside Computing, at CAN$44,809.80 for 30 units. With student fees, ancillary fees and health insurance, its listed total is CAN$47,324.31. Computing tuition is CAN$54,808.20. Rates for 2027-2028 aren't on that page yet.

UBC prices by credit. For international students starting in 2026 or later, Arts is CAN$1,717.68 per credit and Science is CAN$1,769.40. Commerce is CAN$2,222.61. UBC says tuition for students who start in 2026/27 rises by no more than 3% a year for four years. Check whether UBC sets the same limit for 2027 starters before you budget. See UBC tuition and fees and Queen's tuition and fees.

Study permit, funds and PAL

IRCC sets CAN$23,448 for one person's living costs outside Quebec for applications made on or after September 1, 2026. Tuition and travel are extra. Bank statements used as proof should cover the past six months, including the month you apply or the month before. A tuition-only scholarship isn't enough alone. You'd still need proof of living costs. McGill is in Quebec, which sets its own amount through the CAQ, a Quebec acceptance certificate.

Your study-permit file needs a letter of acceptance, proof of identity, proof of funds and a letter of explanation. Most students also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL. Your school tells you how to get it. IRCC states validity for the 2025 and 2026 cap years only. The 2027 rules are pending, so check again before you apply. Students under 17 travelling without parents need proof of care.

Read the international students guide for the wider process. The credential evaluation guide explains when an outside report might matter.

Build your shortlist

Start with subjects. List your electives and your maths module. Then match them to the rules above. Drop any degree whose subjects you can't meet by S6.

Next, set your English plan. If McGill is on your list, book a test now. For schools with teaching-language exemptions, ask your school for a letter that confirms its language and your years there.

Then check the dates. McGill closes January 15. UBC's scholarship route closes November 15, 2026. Use the Canadian deadline guide and the Ontario deadline guide, then confirm each date with the university. If you studied the mainland curriculum, read applying from China instead. Parents can use the international families guide.
