Yes. For Fall 2027 entry, you can apply to Canadian universities with WASSCE results, and some accept NECO. U of T, York, Queen's, uOttawa and Saint Mary's name WAEC or WASSCE results in their current rules. York, Laurier, uOttawa and Dalhousie also name NECO. There's no national WAEC equivalent. Each university sets its own grade floor, from C6 upward.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most country rules below carry no intake year. York's figures come from its 2026-27 handbook, so we label them that way. Where two official pages from one school disagree, we show both.
What WASSCE and NECO are, and who sits them
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination, called WASSCE, is the exam you write at the end of senior secondary school. The West African Examinations Council, called WAEC, runs it. Canadian pages list WAEC results for Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia. They use several labels for the same result. You'll see WAEC, WASSCE, SSCE and Senior School Certificate.
NECO is a different exam board. The National Examinations Council runs a separate senior school exam in Nigeria. It isn't a WAEC result with a new name. That's why a Canadian page can accept one and stay silent on the other. Read the exact board name on each university's country row before you pick a school.
Your Canadian application is judged as a high school file. The schools below review WASSCE as a school-leaving result for first-year entry. You apply for first year, not for transfer credit. Your SS1 to SS3 school record still matters. Several schools ask for it before your final exam results exist.
Students in Cameroon usually hold GCE results rather than WASSCE. If that's you, use the Cameroon guide instead. For country steps in Nigeria and Ghana, use the Nigeria guide and the Ghana guide. This page compares the universities.

| University | Official rule for WASSCE or NECO | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Country rows for Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia name the WAEC Senior School Certificate. | Engineering won't consider a prerequisite below B2. NECO isn't named in these rows. |
| York | Country list names WASSCE or WAEC. The 2026-27 handbook adds NECO, with C4 to C6 final grades for most programs. | Prerequisites should be C6 or better. A 2027-28 handbook wasn't found on October 19, 2026. |
| Queen's | WASSCE accepted. The competitive range is a combination of B2 and B3. | Grades vary by program and by year. NECO isn't named on the page. |
| uOttawa | WAEC or WASSCE with a 75% minimum average. NECO holders are eligible for consideration. | The Ghana page ties 75% to B3. Some programs ask for more. |
| Laurier | Accepts WAEC, WASSCE or NECO results, or in-progress SS3 grades. | Its West Africa page uses five subjects. Its Nigeria page says six courses. Ask which applies. |
| Guelph | WAEC results with a minimum B3 on predicted grades. | A scratch card is required to confirm final results. NECO isn't named. |
| McGill | Lists the Senior School Certificate for Nigeria and Ghana and the WAEC Certificate for Liberia. | The minimum is a B+ equivalent. Most programs ask for more. |
| Manitoba | Accepts the WAEC certificate, with a C5 (70%) average for University 1 and no course below C6. | Engineering needs a B3 (80%) average with no course below C5. |
| Alberta | West Africa page asks for five subjects and final WAEC results or scratch card details. | NECO isn't mentioned there. Confirm in writing before applying with NECO. |
| Dalhousie | Nigeria row accepts WAEC with PIN details, or NECO verified online. | Other WAEC countries use their own national result checkers. |
| Saint Mary's | Considers completed WAEC or WASSCE grades of C6 and higher. | No English test for listed WAEC countries. Program subject lists still apply. |
Treat this table as a starting list. A missing school isn't a refusal. We only listed schools whose official pages we could read on the review date. Waterloo, for example, lists WAEC as a system of study in its requirements tool. Its grade rows load only inside that tool, so we didn't add a row.
Is NECO accepted in Canada?
NECO is where the schools differ most. Four universities name it in writing. York's 2026-27 handbook names WASSCE or NECO. Laurier's West Africa page covers WAEC, WASSCE and NECO in one rule. uOttawa says students who completed NECO are also eligible for consideration. Dalhousie's Nigeria row accepts NECO verified online.
Other schools stay silent. U of T's Nigeria row names only the WAEC certificate. Queen's and Guelph name WASSCE or WAEC. Alberta's West Africa page asks for WAEC results and scratch card details. It doesn't mention NECO at all. Silence doesn't prove a refusal. It also doesn't prove a school will accept NECO.
If you hold only NECO, ask before you pay any fee. Send your exam name, year and subjects to the admissions office. Ask whether NECO alone meets its rule, or whether it wants a WAEC sitting. Keep the written reply with your records. If you hold both, list both on the form.
Combining sittings and resits
Many students write WASSCE twice, or write one WAEC and one NECO sitting. This raises a common question. Can a Canadian university combine your best grades? None of the eleven university pages we read publishes a rule on this. That's an honest gap, not a hidden yes.
So don't build your plan on a merged result. Report every sitting you've written, including any you'd rather hide. Then ask each school in writing which sitting it will use. Ask whether it averages your best grades or takes one exam session. The answer can change which programs are within your reach.
Grade 12 entry, or do you need A-levels first?
Some country systems need extra study before Canadian first year. York's list shows this for other countries. For Lesotho, York asks for O-level plus A-level results, or first year at university. For Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone, it lists WAEC or WASSCE results alone.
None of the WASSCE rows we read adds A-levels or a foundation year as a condition. You can apply from SS3. Alberta lists A-levels and NCUK as separate West African routes, not extra steps. If you're also sitting A-levels, ask how each school will weigh both. Don't delay a year just to add them.
WASSCE grade requirements, school by school
The printed floors start at C6 and climb fast. Saint Mary's will consider C6 and higher. York's 2026-27 handbook says most programs need C4 to C6 final grades. It asks for C6 or better in prerequisites unless a program says otherwise. Guelph asks for at least B3 on predicted grades.
Queen's is more demanding. It says the competitive range is a combination of B2 and B3. U of T Engineering goes further. It won't consider any applicant with a final or predicted result below B2 in a prerequisite subject. A high overall result won't fix one weak prerequisite there.
Manitoba sets floors by program. University 1, its general first-year entry, needs a C5 average across English, mathematics and two academic courses. No course can fall below C6. Engineering needs a B3 average, with no course below C5. Health Sciences and Kinesiology need a B2 average.
Count your credits too. Laurier's West Africa page builds your average from five academic subjects, including English. Its Nigeria page says six senior academic courses, including English. Alberta asks for five subjects. Ask Laurier which count it will use for your file.
Some subjects won't count. Laurier excludes Christian or religious knowledge, civic education, trade or entrepreneurship and home management. It also excludes Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba from the average. It does accept agricultural science. Check each school's list before you count a subject as academic.
What is WAEC equivalent to in Canada?
There isn't one Canadian conversion for WAEC letters. Each university turns them into percentages for its own review. Two schools can give the same grade a very different number. Here is how three official pages treat the same letters.

| WAEC grade | Laurier (Nigeria page) | Manitoba | uOttawa (Ghana page) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 95% | Not shown | Not shown |

| B3 | 70% | 80% | 75% |
| C4 | 65% | Not shown | Not shown |
| C5 | Not shown | 70% | Not shown |
| C6 | 60% | 60% | Not shown |
Laurier says its chart reflects a 50% pass. Manitoba prints its figures beside each program floor. uOttawa states B3 as 75% on its Ghana page. Each figure belongs to that university alone. Don't take Laurier's 70% for B3 to Manitoba, where B3 means 80%.
This is why a free online WAEC converter can mislead you. It gives one number, but your schools use different ones. Keep your original letters on every form. Let each university do its own math. The credential evaluation guide explains why an outside report doesn't replace a school's review.
Subjects that meet Canadian prerequisites
Canadian programs ask for senior courses, such as Grade 12 English or calculus. Laurier lists how WAEC, WASSCE and NECO subjects match. English meets its senior English rule. Mathematics meets its senior math rules, including calculus and statistics. Biology, chemistry and physics match their Canadian names.
Some schools ask for more than the basic subject. Saint Mary's lists Further Mathematics for its science and engineering diploma routes. U of T Engineering needs B2 or better in each prerequisite. Check your subject list against the program before you rank it. The engineering requirements guide shows why the exact math content matters.
How Canadian universities verify WAEC and NECO results
You'll usually apply with school records first and final results later. Alberta reviews SS2 marks and SS3 course registration for early admission. uOttawa asks for three years of transcripts and your first term of final year. Laurier can base its decision on in-progress SS3 grades, then asks for final certificates.
For final results, most schools check them online. Laurier wants unused scratch card details for WAEC and WASSCE. For NECO, it wants your token number and registration number. Alberta asks for your exam number, year, PIN and serial number. U of T Engineering asks for your WAEC exam number and scratch card details.
Queen's asks for a signed note that lets it check your results online. Your PIN and serial numbers must not have reached their use limit. Buy a fresh card if yours has been used many times. A card that runs out can delay your file.
WAEC Ghana says it doesn't issue duplicate certificates. It does issue certified statements of results, which it treats as valid as certificates. It sends these only to institutions, not to students. The current fee is GH¢170 per statement, plus courier costs. NECO runs an official e-Verify portal for result checks.
Verification proves your result is real. It doesn't decide your admission. Follow the method each university assigns in its portal. Don't email a photo of your result unless a school asks for one.
English waivers based on WASSCE
Your WASSCE English grade can meet a subject rule. A language test waiver is a separate question, and schools answer it differently. Saint Mary's is the clearest. It says a test of English isn't required for Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia or Sierra Leone.
U of T lists Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria among countries that may qualify for an exemption. You need at least four years of study in English there. U of T makes the final call. uOttawa skips the test after three years of full-time study in an English-only school, in a country where English is official.
Queen's waives the test after three recent years in an English-speaking country or an English-medium school. It can still ask anyone for a score. Dalhousie generally accepts three years at an English-based secondary school. Waterloo needs your four most recent years in an English school system. Its principal letter must come straight from your school.
UBC accepts four years of full-time English study in a country where English is the principal language. Its page doesn't list which countries count. Ask before you skip a test for UBC. For test scores and booking, use the English tests guide.
Costs, scholarships and the study permit
An offer is only the first step. uOttawa says Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens could be eligible for its scholarship for African students studying in English. Compare open awards and their dates in scholarships for international students. Each award has its own rules.
IRCC, Canada's immigration department, asks you to prove CAN$23,448 for one person's living costs. This applies to applications from September 1, 2026. Tuition and travel come on top. A tuition-only scholarship leaves living costs to prove. The 2027 amount is pending.
Most students also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter. Your school tells you how to request it. IRCC's page shows 2026 letters valid until December 31, 2026. Rules for the 2027 cap year are pending. The international students guide covers the full permit process.
Build your WASSCE shortlist
Start with the program, then check the country row for your exam board. Write your grades beside each school's floor. Mark any NECO, resit or English waiver question. Send those questions to admissions in writing before you pay fees. Parents can use the international families guide for funds and documents. Then compare dates in the application deadlines guide.
