Canadian universities accept the full IB Diploma for Fall 2027, but each one sets its own floor. The published minimums we checked include 24 points at UBC and 30 predicted points at U of T Engineering. There's no national IB-to-percentage converter. A few universities publish their own scale, and each scale serves only that school.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. The rules below come from each university's current IB page. Most pages carry no intake year. Where a page shows a past range or a guideline, we say so in the table and the sections below.
How IB scores work in a Canadian application
The IB Diploma gives you two kinds of numbers. Each subject gets a grade from 1 to 7. Your diploma also has a total, which can include bonus points from Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE). McMaster explains that it counts those bonus points in a total out of 45.
Canadian universities don't agree on which number matters most. Some look at your diploma total. Others look at the grade in each required subject. Many look at both. A strong total won't fix a missing prerequisite, and a 7 in one subject won't fix a low total.
Bonus points are the first place schools split. UBC's calendar counts its 24-point floor with bonus points. McMaster counts them too. Queen's sets its 28-point floor without them. uOttawa leaves bonus and extra points out of its average. U of T Engineering ignores the TOK and EE points. McGill reports its ranges in subject points out of 42.
So before you compare two schools, check how each one counts. A 34 at one school may be a 32 at another once bonus points come out. Write down both numbers for yourself: the total with bonus points and the total without them.

| University | Official rule for the IB Diploma | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | UTM: full diploma, English HL or SL at 4, predicted 27 for a provisional offer. Engineering: 30 predicted points without TOK and EE. | Many programs need more than the floor. Engineering grants no IB advanced standing. |
| McGill | Grades of 5 or better in each HL and SL subject for most programs. Ranges are out of 42. | Ranges are guidelines only and change each year. Math AI SL doesn't meet most maths prerequisites. |
| UBC | At least 24 points including bonus points, and a final 3 in English A. | Most programs need a higher score. First decisions use your school's interim grades. |
| Waterloo | Six IB courses with at least three HL. Mathematics lists HL Analysis and Approaches at 6 and a total of 30. | Totals exclude diploma points. Computer Science lists a total of 32 and a form. |
| Queen's | Full diploma, six subjects with three HL, no mark below 3, and 28 points without bonus. | You still need a competitive score. Engineering averages only the prerequisite subjects. |
| Western | Full diploma with TOK and EE, at least 27 points including both, and no course below 4. | Its admitted ranges have no year label. Ontario IB students are assessed on the OSSD. |
| McMaster | Six subjects, three HL and three SL, plus TOK and EE. Bonus points count, out of 45. | No single minimum is published. Each program sets its own score. |
| York | Computer Science: six passed subjects, maths at 5, and 30 diploma points. | You also need 30 to keep the offer. Other York programs publish their own rules. |
| uOttawa | Six subjects with at least three HL and three SL. Biology and Accounting show 31 points. | Bonus points don't count. An IB certificate on its own isn't enough. |
| Alberta | Six IB courses, no grade below 4, with past competitive scores of 30 to 37. | Your IB coordinator sends a predicted grades form between March 1 and April 30. |
| SFU | Full diploma with at least three HL courses. Predicted bonus points aren't used. | Your school must send an IB predicted grades report. SFU publishes no point minimum. |
| Calgary | Full diploma with three HL courses and all grades above 3, judged on the total score. | Its program scores are estimates, not promises. You also need five program courses. |
Read the table as a list of floors and rules, not a list of likely offers. A floor tells you when a school will look at your file. The score that gets an offer is usually higher, and it moves each year with the number of applicants.
Watch the York row closely. Its 30-point figure belongs to Computer Science. The same page says you need 30 points to keep the offer once final results arrive. A drop from your predicted score can matter as much as the first decision.
Several schools also add a subject floor. McGill expects at least 5 in each subject for most programs. Western sets no course below 4. Alberta does the same. Queen's sets no mark below 3. Those rules apply to every subject, not only the ones your program needs.
Predicted grades first, final results later
Most IB students apply before they sit their final exams. So a Canadian university usually decides on predicted grades or school grades first. Your final results then decide whether you keep the offer.
Each school starts from a different record. McGill reviews your school transcript with predicted IB results, or your final results if you've finished. UBC makes its first decision from interim grades sent by your school. It then uses your final IB results to confirm the decision and any first-year credit. Western uses your predicted results to work out an average and may make a conditional offer.
Who sends the predictions matters too. SFU wants a predicted grades report sent by your school, such as your counsellor or IB coordinator. Alberta wants your coordinator to send its predicted grades form between March 1 and April 30. UTM asks for predicted results on the 1 to 7 scale, including TOK, EE and bonus points, plus a self-reported grades form.
Final results must come from the IB itself. UTM says final results issued by your school aren't official. Western asks for final IB grades sent by the IB. Alberta needs a final, official IB transcript by August 1. Ask your coordinator early which code to use for each school's results.
Plan for a gap between your predictions and your finals. If your offer names a minimum, write it down. Then compare it with your final total and each required subject. The guide to when final marks reach universities explains the timing for Ontario school marks.
Is there an IB grade converter for Ontario?
No. There's no national IB converter and no Ontario-wide one either. Each university decides how to read your IB record.
In Ontario the answer depends on where you study. Western explains that if you're an Ontario IB student, it assesses you on your Ontario diploma, the OSSD. Your guidance office converts your predicted and final IB scores into Ontario grades. The school then sends those grades through OUAC, Ontario's university application centre.
So the conversion that matters for an Ontario IB student is your own school's. Ask your guidance office how it turns IB scores into Ontario marks and when it reports them. Don't plug your scores into an outside converter and treat the result as your admission average.
Once your school has reported Ontario marks, the usual Ontario rules apply. The top six average calculator works on those reported course marks. It doesn't convert IB scores. The academic requirements guide explains how Ontario universities build an average from Grade 12 courses.
Official IB percentage scales that universities publish
Four universities we checked publish their own IB grade scale. UBC's calendar and SFU's IB page show the same scale. Alberta and Calgary each publish a different one. Each row below belongs to the school named in the column heading. None of them is a Canadian standard.
Official IB percentage scales that universities publish comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| IB grade | Alberta | Calgary | UBC and SFU, SL course | UBC and SFU, HL course | UBC and SFU, HL Math |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 98% | 100% | 96% | 98% | 100% |
| 6 | 90% | 91% | 90% | 96% | 98% |
| 5 | 82% | 83% | 86% | 90% | 96% |
| 4 | 73% | 75% | 76% | 86% | 90% |
| 3 | 55% | 68% | 70% | 76% | 86% |
| 2 or 1 | Not accepted for admission | Fail or not complete | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed |
Look at a grade of 6. Alberta reads it as 90%. Calgary reads it as 91%. UBC reads an SL 6 as 90% and an HL 6 as 96%. The same IB grade becomes a different number at each school. That's why no single converter can stand in for these tables.
Each scale also has a narrow job. UBC uses its scale for official IB results when you present IB certificate courses with another school credential. It takes the higher of the IB score or the school grade. SFU shows the scale under its IB course rules. Calgary converts certificate and career-related programme courses this way. Full diploma holders at Calgary are judged on the diploma total instead.
Alberta's scale works with what it calls dual admission. If you take IB exams alongside the Alberta curriculum, it uses the higher of the IB score or the school grade. Its own example: an IB English 6 becomes 90%, which beats an English 30-1 mark of 85%.
Use these numbers only for the school that published them. Don't apply Alberta's scale to an Ontario application. Don't use Calgary's scale to guess a UBC average.
HL and SL prerequisites: the maths choice
Your IB maths course can open or close whole programs. The newer IB maths courses are Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI). Each comes at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). Canadian schools often treat AI SL as weaker preparation.
Queen's says Math AI SL is not an acceptable prerequisite. SFU says AI SL won't meet its maths requirement. McGill won't accept AI SL as a maths prerequisite in most faculties. Its agricultural and environmental faculty is the exception. uOttawa's Biology and Accounting pages also reject AI SL. UBC says AI SL doesn't count as Pre-calculus 12.
Some schools draw the line more finely. McMaster maps AA SL to Ontario's Advanced Functions and Calculus. It maps AI SL to Advanced Functions and Data Management, with no calculus. Western Engineering accepts AA at either level, but AI only at HL. U of T Engineering accepts AA at either level or AI HL and strongly recommends AA HL.
Level and grade can both matter. Waterloo Mathematics lists HL AA with a minimum of 6. York Computer Science wants a maths result of at least 5. Queen's Commerce wants at least 5 in English and in maths. McGill Management wants HL maths, or AA SL with a 6 or 7.
Most schools let you meet other prerequisites at either level. Queen's, Western and SFU list sciences at HL or SL. McGill Science and Engineering want at least one maths or science course at HL. U of T Engineering gives extra weight to HL prerequisites. If you're still choosing courses in Grade 10, check your target programs first.
Average IB score: reading the published ranges
There's no published Canadian average IB score. What you'll find instead are ranges for one school and one program. Each has its own label. Read the label before you use the number.
McGill gives typical minimum ranges out of 42. Arts shows 33 to 36 subject points. Its Science groups show 36 to 39. Mechanical Engineering shows 38 to 42. McGill calls these a guideline only and says they change each year.
Western lists ranges for students it admitted. Computer Science shows 30 to 32, Engineering 33 to 35, and Health Sciences 35 to 38. Western also says you'll usually need predicted results in the low to mid 30s. For scholarships and its most competitive programs, it says you'll usually need 35 or more. The page gives no year for these ranges.
Calgary calls its figures estimated competitive scores. Most Arts programs show 24 to 25. Engineering shows 33 to 34. Biochemistry and Neuroscience show 38 to 42. Alberta says past competitive scores ran from 30 to 37, depending on the program. None of these is a Fall 2027 cut-off.
Use the ranges to sort your list. Put programs where your predicted total sits well inside the range in one group. Put programs where you're near the bottom in another. Then check each program's subject floors, because a total in range won't cover a weak required subject.
IB transfer credit at each university
A strong IB record can earn first-year university credit. The rules differ more than the admission rules do. Most schools want a final HL grade of 5 or more. Credit also depends on your program, and it comes only after the IB sends your final results.
McGill grants up to 30 credits for the diploma, based on HL results of 5 or better and your program. SFU gives one full year, 30 units, for a completed diploma. Calgary gives up to a full year of first-year credit, 30 units, for the diploma. York Computer Science grants credit for HL grades of 5 or better, up to 30 credits.
Other schools cap credit by faculty. Waterloo usually needs a final 5 in an HL course. Its Arts faculty considers up to 4.0 units for the full diploma. Mathematics allows up to 1.5 units. Waterloo Engineering grants no first-year IB exemptions. Waterloo also considers one philosophy credit if you earn at least a B in both TOK and the EE.
U of T is split by campus and faculty. UTM awards up to 3.0 credits for HL exams with a grade of 5 or more. It gives no credit for SL exams. U of T Engineering grants no advanced standing for IB courses.
UBC credits HL arts courses at 5 and HL science courses at 6, and some SL courses. Its table lists Biology HL at 6 for 8 credits. Western assesses credit for HL courses at 5 or more with a full diploma. McMaster may give credit for HL scores of 5 or more at the faculty's choice. Alberta offers credit or placement for final grades of 5 or more on listed exams. It also adds three units of open elective for a completed diploma.
We couldn't confirm IB credit rules for Queen's or uOttawa from the pages we read. Ask those schools directly. Credit can also be declined at some schools, such as Waterloo and Alberta. That can help if you want to retake a course you'll build on later.
IB certificate students and the career-related programme
Not every IB student takes the full diploma. Some take IB courses with a school diploma. Others take the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP). Schools treat these routes in different ways.
UBC lets you combine IB certificate courses with an approved school credential. uOttawa won't consider you with an IB certificate alone. You must also hold or be finishing a high school diploma. UTM asks certificate students to name the school diploma they'll receive. SFU judges partial IB students on their school results.
Queen's reviews the IBCP with your full school record. Science and Commerce applicants need at least three IB courses. Arts applicants need at least two, and English must be one of them. uOttawa accepts the IBCP for Arts, Social Sciences and its Telfer business school, with at least 29 points. Calgary reviews IBCP students on five program courses.
English, scholarships and costs
IB English often helps with the language rule, but not every version counts. UBC asks for a final 3 in English A. Waterloo accepts HL English B at 5 where a program asks for English A. uOttawa asks English B students for a language test. The English test guide covers waivers and accepted tests.
Some awards name IB students. Alberta lists an Enriched Scholar Scholarship of up to $3,500 that IB students may be eligible for. Western says competitive scholarship applicants usually present 35 or more. For other awards, use the international scholarships guide.
If you're applying from outside Canada, your IB doesn't change the study permit steps. The international students guide covers fees, funds and permits. The credential evaluation guide explains when a school wants official IB results instead of an outside report.
Build your IB shortlist
Start with your predicted total, with and without bonus points. Then list your HL and SL subjects and your maths course. For each program, write the floor, the subject rules and the maths rule from the school's own page.
Mark any program where your maths course fails the rule. Then mark any program where your total sits below the published range. Ask your IB coordinator which schools need a predicted grades form, and by what date.
Keep the deadlines in one place. The Canadian application deadlines guide lists the main dates. For program detail, compare the Waterloo Mathematics requirements, the McGill Engineering requirements and the York Computer Science requirements.
