Yes. For Fall 2027 you can apply to Canadian universities with the French baccalauréat général, including the reformed bac with spécialités. McGill, U of T, UBC, Ottawa, Concordia and Quebec's French-language universities publish France routes. In Quebec, French citizens with a CAQ and study permit pay a lower rate: CAN$324.35 per credit at McGill and Concordia in 2026-27.

Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most admission rules below are current and carry no intake year. Fee figures are labelled with their cycle. The 2027-28 Quebec rates and the 2027 immigration amounts weren't published on this date.

What Canadian universities read in your bac

Admissions offices rarely wait for your final bac. U of T says conditional offers use your previous year's grades and in-term results. So the record that matters most is your school reports.

McGill reviews your bulletins from the last two lycée years. It wants marks out of 20 with class averages shown. For competitive programs, it expects your results to sit above the class average. If you've already finished, McGill can use your final bac results instead.

Ottawa builds an average from three pieces. It uses your full year before terminale, your terminale interim grades and any mock bac exams. Laval and UQAM ask for the year before terminale plus the first terminale term. Your teachers' term reports are doing the real work.

The reformed bac changed what Canada checks. Old pages talked about the S, ES or L series. Newer pages talk about spécialités, the subjects you choose to study in depth. McGill's main country table still lists the old series for France. Its French Baccalaureate page lists the Bac 2021 rules. Use the dedicated page, and mention the conflict if a form asks for a series.

Your choice of spécialités decides your options. You study some spécialités in the year before terminale and keep two in terminale. Canadian science and business programs often need maths in both years. Engineering usually wants physique-chimie in both years too. The list below shows how two universities read the same subjects.

  • U of T: Anglais in première and terminale is required for every program.
  • U of T: spécialité maths in both years meets the Calculus prerequisite; Mathématiques expertes is recommended for Engineering.
  • U of T: maths in première only, or Mathématiques complémentaires, meets Advanced Functions.
  • McGill Management: spécialité maths in both years, or maths in première plus Mathématiques complémentaires in terminale.
  • McGill Science and Engineering: spécialité maths in both years and physique-chimie in première.

The Grand oral is part of the reformed exam. The ministry's current rules give it 20 minutes, 20 minutes to prepare and a coefficient of 10. You present questions built on your two terminale spécialités. None of the Canadian pages checked treats it as a separate entry rule. It matters because it feeds your final bac result.

Pass the bac at the first sitting if you can. McGill expects you to get it in the first group of exams. Laval's Law sheet for 2027-2028 says the bac must be obtained directly, without the resit round. A resit can turn a clean offer into a problem.

McGillGeneral bac only; professional and technological bacs refused. Typical ranges out of 20 run from 11 to 12 in some Agriculture and Education programs up to 18 to 19 in Mechanical Engineering.Ranges are guidelines, not cutoffs. Quebec's French-language universities

Laval explains the bac rule clearly. Quebec normally wants 13 years of schooling before a bachelor's degree. The bac covers 12. An international agreement lets Laval treat it as equal anyway. So you usually enter first year directly, without the CEGEP step Quebec students take.

There's a catch for science. Laval's Science and Engineering faculty asks French bac holders to complete a preparatory year first. Its faculty sheet asks for 12/20 in science subjects, with no science mark below 10/20. Agriculture and Forestry have the same preparatory rule, apart from a few named programs. Plan for four years of study, not three, if you choose those fields.

UdeM takes a softer approach. If your spécialités don't cover a program's prerequisites, it can prescribe preparatory courses. You take them at UdeM alongside your first courses. Its Bac à Bac tool shows which spécialité choices lead to which programs. A professional bac holder may also get in after an upgrading year.

Sherbrooke sets a floor of 12/20 for students from France. Each program then lists the spécialités it wants for both final years. Engineering has an extra layer. Quebec's engineering regulator expects certain science and maths content. French bac holders take named Quebec complementary courses or Sherbrooke's preparatory certificate to meet it.

UQAM is the most open on paper. Its answers say a general, technological or professional bac usually gives direct entry. The degree is three years, like a licence. You can't skip into second year with a BTS or DUT. You may ask for credit recognition after admission, with no promise it'll be granted.

French tests are mostly not an issue for students schooled in France. Sherbrooke exempts a bac from a French school in France or the overseas departments. UdeM asks for proof when your earlier studies were partly in French or another language. Still, some programs add their own French checks after admission.

English-taught universities in Quebec and beyond

McGill and Concordia teach in English, in Montreal. U of T and UBC are further away, but both publish France rules. The big question for a French student is English proof. Neither the standard bac nor a good Anglais mark is listed as an automatic exemption at these schools.

McGill exempts the BFI with an American or British section, and the older OIB. Concordia exempts the bac with an American, Australian or British OIB, or the BFI. Concordia also says a dual French bac and American high school diploma isn't enough on its own. If you're in a standard section, book an approved test early.

U of T requires a senior English course for everyone. For you, that's Anglais in both final years. That course doesn't replace a test, though. U of T's exemptions cover four years of study in English in countries where English dominates. France isn't on that list. Compare test options in our English test guide.

UBC's calendar accepts the general bac or the BFI and looks at the technological bac case by case. It also sets a 70% English rule for students at schools that teach in English. UBC's general deadline for English proof is February 15, 2027.

Study in French outside Quebec

Ottawa sits in Ontario, across the river from Quebec. Many of its programs run in French, and others run in English. Its France page asks for 11/20 overall and 10/20 in each prerequisite. You only need an English test if you choose a program taught in English.

Ottawa also offers a fee exemption scholarship to international students in French programs or French immersion. You must take at least three courses taught in French each term. For students starting in Winter 2024 or later, it pays CAN$12,500 a term in Arts and Social Sciences. It pays CAN$16,000 in Management and CAN$18,000 in Engineering. It renews for up to 12 term payments if you keep the conditions.

This scholarship isn't the France-Quebec agreement. It's Ottawa's own award, and it lowers its international fee. Ottawa's 2026-2027 tables say first-year international undergraduate fees didn't change from 2025-2026. Read the Ottawa fee guide for program amounts, and confirm the scholarship in your offer.

Documents and dates for a Fall 2027 start

Ask your lycée for every bulletin from the last two years now. Ottawa wants the three terms before terminale and your first terminale term. If you've finished, send your bac results instead. Keep copies that show the class average, since McGill reads it.

Dates differ a lot, and some pages don't print a year. McGill shows January 15 to apply and March 1 for documents. Sherbrooke's international fall deadline is January 15. UdeM's usual cutoff for students schooled outside Quebec is February 1. UQAM says March 1 but advises applying in January. Concordia's deadline is March 1, and it asks international students to apply by February 1.

Outside Quebec, Ottawa advises applying before January 15, 2027. It wants documents by February 15, 2027 or 30 days after you apply. UBC's deadline is January 15, 2027. Use our deadline guide to line these up, then check each program page.

Concordia says international schools aren't on Parcoursup. Each school here takes applications on its own website. Keep your Parcoursup wishes as a backup plan in France. Our credential evaluation guide explains when a university wants an outside report. The schools above publish their own French bac rules.

Tuition: the France-Quebec rate

Quebec and France have a student mobility agreement. For a full-time bachelor's program, French students pay what Canadians from other provinces pay, without the extra increase. Quebec calls this the Preferential CNRQ rate. Students who are also Canadian citizens can't use it. Permanent residents of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon get the Quebec rate instead.

Here's what that means in money for 2026-27. McGill's Rate B for French citizens with a valid CAQ is CAN$324.35 per credit. Concordia lists the same CAN$324.35 for fall 2026 and winter 2027. UdeM charges non-residents CAN$324.35 a credit in French-taught bachelor's programs. Its current page lists CAN$1,025.76 a credit for other international students, with French students excluded from that row.

Laval shows a full-year example for 2026-2027. Eligible French students pay CAN$10,868.96 for 30 credits, including a CAN$1,000 deposit. Laval estimates the total year at CAN$29,499 to CAN$33,739 with housing and food. France and Quebec also have a social security deal. You may get Quebec health cover and skip Laval's group insurance.

The rate has strict paperwork. McGill, Laval and Concordia all need a valid French passport, study permit and CAQ. McGill ends the exemption the day any document expires. UdeM won't apply it to a qualifying program or free-standing courses. Sherbrooke stops it for microprograms from summer 2026. The 2027-28 rates haven't been published, so these are last year's figures. See the McGill fee guide and the Concordia fee guide.

Scholarships: what's open and what's passed

For Fall 2027, UBC International Scholars is open. You apply to UBC and finish the award form by November 15, 2026. You need a school nominator and a different teacher as referee. Documents and English proof are due January 31, 2027 for this program. The award looks at financial need as well as merit.

U of T's Pearson award has closed its first steps for this cycle. School nominations closed October 9, 2026, and the admission deadline was October 16. Only students who met those steps finish the November 6, 2026 stage. McGill lists a January 21 deadline for its major entrance awards, with no year shown. Browse more options on our international scholarships page.

CAQ, study permit and proof of funds

Quebec adds its own step before the federal one. You apply online for temporary selection and get a CAQ, the Quebec Acceptance Certificate. The fee is CAN$135 from January 1, 2026. Quebec says 80% of complete files get a decision within 25 business days. The CAQ letter is then used for your federal study permit.

Quebec also caps CAQ applications for each school. The cap runs from December 17, 2025 to December 16, 2027. If your school's cap is full, you can't apply unless an exemption fits you. So apply for the CAQ as soon as your offer arrives. UdeM warns that permits can take several months. Sherbrooke says to allow at least three to six months.

Quebec's funds rule is separate from Canada's. For applications from January 1, 2026, one person needs CAN$24,617 a year for essential costs. Tuition and travel come on top. The 2027 amount is pending. Ottawa students follow the federal table instead: CAN$23,448 for one person from September 1, 2026, plus tuition and travel.

IRCC lists the acceptance letter, identity, proof of funds and an attestation letter. For Quebec, the CAQ letter fills the attestation role. Outside Quebec you need a provincial letter, called a PAL. IRCC's page says 2026 letters run to December 31, 2026. It doesn't yet give 2027 dates, so check again before you apply. The international students guide covers the full permit steps.
