Is McGill University hard to get into?
McGill can be competitive, with large differences between degrees and required subjects. Its Fall 2025 undergraduate/professional profile reports 18,132 offers from 38,135 applicants. Ontario applicants for Fall 2027 should compare McGill's own Top 6 calculation, the program's separate subject bands and any extra assessment before deciding which applications are realistic.

The overall offer counts provide context, not a faculty ranking
McGill's final Fall 2025 profile lists 38,135 undergraduate/professional applicants, 18,132 offers and an entering class of 7,310. These are three different counts. Keep them separate. The profile includes degrees, certificates and diplomas, with special, visiting and exchange students excluded. Keep that scope attached to the whole-school figures when you plan.
The faculty table lists applicants and registered students, not faculty offers. The overall total counts each person once. That stays true if they apply to more than one unit. Engineering's enrolled count is not its offer count. Dividing it by applicants would not give an offer rate. Summing all faculty applicant rows would also double-count some people.
Use our McGill acceptance-rate guide for the detailed figures and methods. Here the next step is the degree's published academic review. Mechanical Engineering, Arts and Music need different subjects or assessments. The whole-university profile does not settle which of those routes fits your record.

Build McGill's Top 6 before comparing your average
For an Ontario school in Canada, McGill uses its own calculation of six eligible 4U, DU or 4M courses. At least four must be at the 4U or DU level, and all prerequisite courses must meet that level rule. No more than two 4M courses can be used. Keep required subjects in the average. A higher elective cannot take their place.
Every program requires core English or French at the 4U level. McGill selects the higher eligible core-language grade where applicable. English Second Language and French Second Language do not satisfy this prerequisite. Do not just choose the six marks that give the highest average. Check course codes and course type first. Then judge where your marks stand.
McGill also limits which applied, technology and physical education courses count. Its Ontario page lists the eligible exceptions. Maths and science prerequisites must have been completed within the last five years. A recent Grade 12 student may meet that timing easily, but a returning applicant should verify it rather than assume an older subject still qualifies.
Read the required-subject column beside the overall band
Arts has high-80s to low-90s typical guidance for both Top 6 and core English or French. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering have mid to high-90s Top 6 guidance and mid-90s maths/science guidance. Management publishes separate overall, maths and core-language columns. Read each subject column. A strong overall mark does not make them optional.
The labels also vary within the page. Most sections use Typical Minimum Admission Grades Ranges and say that the guidance may not represent upcoming entry requirements. The Science section uses LAST YEAR'S CUT-OFFS. It does not name that cohort year. We keep both labels and do not rename either one a fixed Fall 2027 winning average.
McGill marks both grade columns to be determined for the new Fall 2027 Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences group. There is no numerical cutoff to fill in. Other Science groups still have their own published entries. Read the exact admission group you select, and do not transfer an older group's figure to a newly named stream.
Which degrees add requirements beyond the usual academic review?
Additional documents depend on the program. The Ontario page names a Personal Statement for Global Engineering and explains that its review is handled jointly by both universities. Music has a separate admission process. Within Arts, Population and Global Health takes a separate application with additional documents, and Psychology also requires a separate application.
These examples are reasons to read the degree checklist before applying. They do not create one McGill essay for everyone. An essay cannot be assumed to repair any gap in marks. Your route may not ask for a general personal profile. In that case, do not plan around an imagined profile score. Complete the requested work and supply documents in the form the university asks for.
You may need proof of English skill as well as a core English or French course. Follow the stated exemptions or accepted proof for your own education history. You can meet the course list and still need another document. Checking both keeps an otherwise plausible application from remaining incomplete.

Make a below-range plan from the component that is weakest
If you are two to five points below a published band, first identify which column you mean. Is it the eligible Top 6, the required maths/science group or core language? Recalculate from the correct subjects before making a course decision. An extra high elective cannot be assumed to replace a weaker prerequisite in McGill's own calculation.
Then check the academic work still available to improve. Ask your school how official interim or final grades will be reported, and read McGill's self-reporting instructions. Verify any planned repeat or unusual course history with admissions. The page explains course rules and grade ranges. It does not promise an offer if you raise a mark by a set amount.
Retain alternatives with courses and a degree purpose you would accept. Materials Engineering, Arts, Management and the Science groups are different studies, not interchangeable ways to enter one desired program. Compare their actual subject requirements before applying. Choose an alternate degree you would want to finish. A hoped-for later transfer is a weak reason to accept it.
Treat equal-to-range marks with care as well. McGill says competition and available space can move admission grades from year to year, and equal or higher grades do not guarantee admission. Keep the current benchmark in view, complete the file and choose a balanced set of realistic degree options. No verified personal percentage follows from this table.

A complete file and the correct calendar matter
The named Fall 2027 calendar sets February 1 for the listed applicants studying in Canadian high schools outside Quebec, with Music excepted. That application date is distinct from supporting documents and grade self-reporting. Our McGill deadline guide separates applicant groups and program exceptions. One date does not apply to every degree.
The Ontario page lists windows for self-reporting and documents. That panel does not name a year. We do not silently label those windows confirmed 2027 dates. Use the checklist for your application to confirm which period applies. The page currently requires grade self-reporting and an uploaded unofficial transcript; Ontario applicants are not asked for an OUAC number until offered admission.
McGill warns that capacity can matter before a later supporting-document or self-reporting deadline. Incomplete files may be cancelled if a program fills. Send the facts McGill asks for, without errors or delay. Do not assume space will remain until the last listed day. AP and IB results may affect later advanced standing without replacing the ordinary Ontario review described on the page.

Understand the first year and any later work route
An Ontario entrant to Arts without enough advanced-standing credits normally uses the Foundation U0 route. McGill's Arts page identifies U0 for entrants with fewer than twenty-four such credits. That structure helps explain the courses you will start with. It does not mean every Ontario student is automatically adding a fifth year to a four-year degree.
Engineering has another structure again. Its internship office describes an optional Engineering Internship Program for listed disciplines and mandatory co-op in Mining, Materials and Software Engineering. Do not assume all McGill degrees offer the same work sequence. Check the actual degree. Find out which marks or other conditions the later work route needs.
The McGill Engineering admission guide keeps that degree's entry details at its canonical address. Use first-year course lists to judge your readiness for the subject, then read the later requirements for the cohort you enter. An entry offer cannot settle every future course choice or work term. Employers make their own hiring decisions.

Keep Ontario school study separate from the tuition category
An Ontario school qualification tells McGill how to assess your courses. Fee status is another question. A Canadian non-Quebec BA student in the since-Fall-2025 Rate A category has $12,985.50 tuition for thirty credits in the selected 2026-27 table. Other student charges are separate. The table does not set one price for every faculty or fee group.
Use the McGill tuition guide to match your degree, credit load, entry cohort and fee eligibility. Professional faculties have exceptions, and older cohorts can use different columns. These current figures do not confirm approved Fall 2027 tuition. Update the budget when the new schedule is published and before committing to costs.
Add housing, food, books and travel, then check the McGill residence chapter and financial-aid chapter. Funding conditions and the work route need their own review. Strong marks are one part of a workable degree plan. Being able to pay the right bill is another. Settle both before you accept.
