McGill University Admission Requirements & Prerequisites 2027

McGill evaluates applicants using the rules for their educational background and intended program. Ontario applicants need an OSSD, at least six eligible Grade 12 U/M courses, every prerequisite, and 4U English or French. Quebec CEGEP applicants need a pre-university DEC and the required core courses. IB, A-Level, CAPE, U.S., and other applicants follow separate curriculum-specific requirements.

There is no university-wide McGill admission average. For September 2025, the lowest admitted Ontario Top 6 averages included 90% for Arts and 93% for Management. Physical, Earth, Math and Computer Sciences was 91%. The Engineering examples in this guide ranged from 90% to 96%. McGill says these prior results are references only and do not guarantee future admission.

An Ontario applicant to McGill's Bachelor of Commerce needs 4U English or French and Calculus and Vectors. The September 2025 reference was a 93% Top 6 average and 90% in the mathematics prerequisite. The standard BCom is not on McGill's current list of programs requiring additional supporting documents, but the Applicant Portal checklist is authoritative.

McGill requires at least six eligible Grade 12 courses: a minimum of four 4U or DU courses, including every prerequisite, and no more than two eligible 4M courses. The calculation includes prerequisites. Applied courses are generally excluded, while McGill lists a small group of eligible technology, physical education, and performing arts courses.

McGill reviews the overall CEGEP R-score and, for programs with prerequisites, a core R-score. September 2025 references included 26.9 overall for Arts, 29.4 for Management, 28 for the listed Science groups, 32.7 for Architecture, and 33 for Mechanical Engineering. These are previous lowest admitted values, not guaranteed future cutoffs.

McGill does not publish one GPA requirement for every applicant. The university assesses the complete academic record using the applicant's school system, program prerequisites, and program-specific competitive level. Use McGill's requirements selector for your exact educational background instead of converting an Ontario average, CEGEP R-score, IB result, or A-Level profile into one unofficial GPA.

For Fall 2026, most U.S. high school applicants may opt out of ACT or SAT consideration. McGill has not yet published the Fall 2027 testing policy. Under the current policy, submitted SAT scores are generally competitive from 670 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 580 in Math. Engineering and Architecture use 620 in Math. The ACT reference is 26 overall with section scores of at least 24.

McGill is in Montreal, Quebec—not Ontario—so applicants do not apply through OUAC. Create a McGill application, choose programs, submit and pay online, and then use the McGill Applicant Portal to follow the checklist, upload requested documents, and monitor the decision.

McGill has published one confirmed Fall 2027 deadline as of August 16, 2026. January 15, 2027 applies to applicants studying, or last studying, outside Canada and the United States. February 1 for Ontario and rest-of-Canada applicants remains a standing date without a Fall 2027 label. The same limitation applies to the March 1 Quebec CEGEP date. McGill reviews the IB transcript together with predicted or final results. A complete diploma with grades of at least 5 in each Higher Level and Standard Level subject is the stated minimum expectation, while competitive programs can require substantially higher results. For programs requiring mathematics, acceptable options include HL Analysis and Approaches, SL Analysis and Approaches, and HL Applications and Interpretation; SL Applications and Interpretation does not satisfy a mathematics prerequisite.

Yes. McGill evaluates Caribbean applicants using CSEC, CAPE Unit 1, CAPE Unit 2 predicted or final results, and school results. Advanced Level applicants generally need at least three A-Level-equivalent subjects and the prerequisites for the intended program. McGill can grant up to 30 credits of advanced standing, subject to its faculty and course rules.

McGill's prerequisites depend on the program and educational background. Every Ontario program in this guide requires 4U English or French.
