University of Alberta tuition, the international guarantee, and awards
Domestic tuition is registration-based and priced by course fee index, so there is no single flat-year figure — a standard three-credit course costs $729.36 in 2026-2027. International students are on a completely different model: a program-based guarantee fixed in the offer letter.
| 2026-2027 item | Domestic cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 3-credit course (fee index 6) | $729.36 | Based on the 2026-2027 fee index value of $121.56 set by the Board of Governors. |
| Standard 6-credit course (fee index 12) | $1,458.72 | Most undergraduate courses carry a fee index of 6 or 12. |
| Engineering course, per 3-credit weight | $1,123.04 | A faculty-specific rate above the standard index. |
| Business course, per 3-credit weight | $1,152 | Published as a flat total cost per course. |
| Pharmacy core course, per 3-credit weight | $1,703.88 | The highest published undergraduate faculty-specific course rate. |
| Medical Laboratory Science course, per 3-credit weight | $793.80 | Applies to the professional Medical Laboratory Science route. |
| Radiation Therapy course, per 3-credit weight | $813.24 | Applies to the professional Radiation Therapy route. |
| Centre collégial de l'Alberta course, per 3-credit weight | $387.24 | Priced on a separate, lower fee index value of $63.28 at Campus Saint-Jean's college arm. |
| Law (JD) and Medicine (MD) program fee | $3,117.14 per term; $6,234.28 per two terms | Charged in addition to course fees, and only for these two professional programs. |
The international tuition guarantee, precisely
International undergraduates receive an annual and a total program tuition guarantee stated in the offer of admission, set for the typical duration of the program plus one year — five years for a four-year degree. The annual amount is charged regardless of how many courses you register in, and spring or summer registration adds one quarter of the annual figure. The limits are equally specific: the guarantee covers instructional tuition only, excluding non-instructional fees, residence, textbooks, repeated courses, and anything taken outside your degree requirements. AP, IB or GCE transfer credit lowers the total, adjusted up to a maximum of 12 credits at the start of the program. Because the rate lives in your offer letter, the U of A publishes no international per-program tuition table at all — use its Cost Calculator instead.

Fall 2027 increases are already approved
On March 27, 2026 the Board of Governors approved a 5.5 per cent increase for new international undergraduate students in Fall 2027, with the Bachelor of Science in Computing Science harmonised to Engineering tuition levels — a proportional increase of 26 per cent — and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing rising 20 per cent. Domestic increases are separately capped by provincial legislation at 2 per cent a year. Mandatory non-instructional fees sit outside that cap and rose by an Academic Price Index of 3.56 per cent for Fall 2026.
2026-2027 Fall/Winter
2026-2027 domestic tuition by course fee index
Domestic tuition is registration-based and priced by fee index. The 2026-2027 index value is $121.56, so a standard three-credit course (fi 6) costs $729.36 and a six-credit course (fi 12) costs $1,458.72. Faculty-specific rates per three-credit course: Engineering $1,123.04, Business $1,152, Pharmacy core $1,703.88, Radiation Therapy $813.24, Medical Laboratory Science $793.80, and Centre collégial de l'Alberta $387.24 on a lower index value of $63.28. Law and Medicine add a program fee of $3,117.14 per term or $6,234.28 per two terms.
The fee index value is set by the Board of Governors, so a registration-based total depends entirely on which courses you register in; there is no single flat-year figure.

2026-27
The U of A's own first-year cost estimate
For a Canadian student in a general Arts program in 2026-27 the U of A publishes $7,200 tuition plus $3,700 for books, supplies and fees, for a Year 1 total of $10,900. Adding residence and a meal plan at $14,800+ gives a Year 1 total of $25,700, based on a single room with a private washroom in Schäffer Hall for eight months with a seven-day meal plan.
The U of A labels these figures subject to change every year and dependent on the program of study; use the Cost Calculator for a program-specific estimate.

Current model
The international program-based tuition guarantee
International undergraduate students are assessed on a program-based model rather than the registration-based model used for domestic students, and receive both an annual and a total program tuition guarantee stated in their offer of admission. The guarantee runs for the typical duration of the program plus one additional year — the U of A's own example is five years for a four-year program. The annual amount is assessed regardless of how many courses are registered, and spring or summer registration is charged at one quarter of the annual guarantee.
The U of A implemented this in response to Alberta's Bill 19 for international students beginning studies in 2020 and onward, and states the program-based model will not be extended to domestic students.

What the tuition guarantee does not cover
The guaranteed rate applies only to instructional tuition. Non-instructional fees and residence fees are assessed separately, are subject to annual increases, and are excluded, as are textbooks and other student costs. The guarantee also excludes the cost of repeating any course you withdrew from or failed, and any course taken outside your degree requirements. High-school international direct-entry students receive a tuition adjustment for AP, IB or GCE transfer credit up to a maximum of 12 credits at the start of the program, with any excess adjusted at the end.

International tuition deposit and the study-permit link
For most new international applicants the tuition deposit is $5,000, required to accept the admission offer, receive the Provincial Attestation Letter needed for a study permit application, and become eligible to register in courses. For students already studying in Canada the deposit is $1,000. Some applicant types are exempt from accepting an offer or paying a deposit.
Because the deposit gates the Provincial Attestation Letter, it sits on the critical path for a study permit; budget for it well before the May 1, 2027 offer-acceptance date.

Fall 2027
Fall 2027 tuition increases are already Board-approved
On March 27, 2026 the Board of Governors approved a 5.5 per cent increase for new international undergraduate and course-based graduate students in Fall 2027, with two named exceptions: the Bachelor of Science in Computing Science is harmonised to Engineering tuition levels, a proportional increase of 26 per cent, and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing rises 20 per cent to align with peer institutions. Thesis-based graduate tuition is reduced by 5.5 per cent in Fall 2027. The same decision set a 2 per cent domestic undergraduate increase for Fall 2026.
These are approved percentages, not proposals. The U of A explains it sets new international cohort rates a year in advance precisely so the guarantee can be stated at the time of admission — which is why a Fall 2027 percentage exists before a Fall 2027 dollar table does.

Current legislation
Domestic increases are capped by provincial legislation
As part of Budget 2023 the Government of Alberta announced plans to limit domestic tuition increases to 2 per cent annually starting in 2024-25 and continuing for future academic years, and from Fall 2024 domestic tuition increases are restricted by provincial legislation to a maximum equivalent to 2 per cent across the institution. The U of A also maintains domestic tuition offset funding for student financial support at $8.5 million per year, and an international tuition offset of 8.55 per cent of all international tuition revenue.
Mandatory non-instructional fees are outside that 2 per cent cap and rise by a separate Academic Price Index, which was 3.56 per cent for Fall 2026.

2027-28
2027-28 dollar tables status
Not yet published. The Office of the Registrar's latest posted undergraduate schedule is the Fall/Winter 2026-2027 fee-index table, and the tuition model page still carries section headings for students starting in Fall 2025. The approved Fall 2027 percentages exist without a corresponding 2027-28 dollar table.
Budget with the labelled 2026-2027 fee index and re-check the Office of the Registrar's undergraduate tuition pages before treating any figure as a Fall 2027 quote. International applicants receive their own guaranteed rate in the offer letter rather than reading it off a table.

Fall 2027
International per-program tuition amounts are not published anywhere
The U of A does not publish a Fall/Winter international undergraduate tuition table. The tuition model page states that the rate of tuition and the terms of the guarantee are outlined in the letter of admission, and the admissions pages route students to the Cost Calculator at costcalculator.registrar.ualberta.ca, which emails a personalised estimate rather than displaying a public rate table. The only published international per-faculty figures are single-term Spring/Summer 2026 assessments for the Fall 2025 entry cohort.
Any guide quoting a specific U of A international per-program annual tuition figure is not citing a first-party source. Use the Cost Calculator, then rely on the guaranteed amount stated in your offer of admission.

Three different annual scholarship totals are published
The entrance scholarships page says the Office of the Registrar administers 'more than $53 million each year'. The tuition increases page says the U of A 'awards more than $56 million annually in undergraduate scholarships, awards, and financial support'. The registrar's scholarships index says 'over $50 million each year'.
None of the three figures carries a fiscal year, so treat the scale as roughly $50-56 million rather than quoting a precise total.

2026-2027
2026-2027 mandatory non-instructional fees
The on-campus full-time total is $1,494.07: U-Pass $182.50, Students' Union membership fees $64.22, Students' Union dedicated fees $89.06, Students' Union Health Plan $204.93, Dental Plan $199.84, Athletics and Recreation $104.88, PAW Centre fee $29.00, Student Health and Wellness $70.24, and Course Material Access $259. The part-time total is $1,230.66. Augustana's on-campus full-time total is $1,276.95.
Athletics and Recreation and the PAW Centre fee are marked as no opt-out. The health and dental plans, the APIRG fee, and the Access Fund can be opted out of. Winter-only students are assessed $136.62 for health and $133.23 for dental.

September 2027 entry
The September 2027 scholarship application window
For undergraduate students starting at the U of A in September 2027, the scholarship application opens October 1, 2026 and closes January 10, 2027. Applicants must apply for admission first to receive a CCID, which can take two to three business days to generate, then apply through Awards Hub. The Discover University of Alberta Award and the Turtle Spirit Pathway Award run separately, opening October 1, 2026 and closing February 15, 2027, with offers beginning mid-April 2027.
The January 10, 2027 award deadline lands nearly two months before the March 1, 2027 admission deadline, so applying for admission at the March deadline forfeits the application-based award competition.

The U of A does not offer full scholarships
The entrance scholarships page states plainly that the University of Alberta does not offer full scholarships for either domestic or international students. It administers more than $53 million each year in undergraduate scholarships, awards and financial support, and the international page says one in five first-year students receives a scholarship. The U of A also states that its scholarship and award competitions are competitive and that meeting eligibility is no guarantee of an offer.
The one exception the U of A publishes is a named partnership award for Aga Khan Academy IB Diploma students covering total tuition and non-instructional fees for four years plus up to $28,000 per year for living expenses — a specific agreement, not a general full-ride programme.
