U of A Campuses, LRT and U-Pass: North, South, Saint-Jean, Augustana

The U of A has five campuses in two cities. Most students study on North Campus in Edmonton. Campus Saint-Jean teaches in French, South Campus holds research farms and sports venues, Enterprise Square is downtown, and Augustana is in Camrose. If you take on-campus courses in Edmonton, your fees include a U-Pass for unlimited regular transit, loaded on an Arc card.

Getting around Edmonton by LRT

Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) runs three LRT lines. The Capital Line and the Metro Line both stop at University station; the U of A says the Van Vliet Complex is a few blocks west of it. Both lines also stop at Health Sciences/Jubilee and Bay/Enterprise Square. The Capital Line continues south to South Campus/Fort Edmonton Park station.

Campus Saint-Jean is in the Bonnie Doon area, and the Valley Line lists a Bonnie Doon stop. Résidence Saint-Jean also advertises a free shuttle between Campus Saint-Jean and North Campus. Use the ETS trip planner for the exact walk.

The U-Pass: cost, coverage and setup

Every student registered in at least one on-campus, for-credit course at the Edmonton campuses pays the U-Pass fee each term. Augustana students are exempt and can't opt in. The 2026-27 fee table lists $182.50 a term. The U-Pass page still quotes $180 a term from 2021-22, so rely on the fee table and your Bear Tracks fee assessment.

The two pages also list different transit systems. The fee description names Edmonton, St. Albert and Strathcona County Transit. The U-Pass page adds Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc and Beaumont Transit, plus Route 747 to Edmonton International Airport.

  • Buy an Arc card at SUBmart in the Students' Union Building, an LRT transit centre, another listed retailer or online.
  • Register the card number in the U-Pass app. Activation can take up to seven days at the start of term, so pay fares until it works.
  • Keep the same card. It updates automatically each term you're assessed the fee.
  • An "insufficient funds" error usually means you weren't assessed the fee. Check Bear Tracks under Financial Account, then Fee Assessment.
  • Exemption deadlines are December 31 for fall, April 30 for winter and August 31 for spring and summer. Don't pick up an Arc card if you plan to apply.

Who can skip the U-Pass

The U-Pass is mandatory for most students, backed by student referendums. You can apply for an exemption only in these cases.

  • You work for one of the participating transit systems.
  • You hold a valid disabled transit registration or CNIB registration card.
  • You're also registered at NAIT, MacEwan University or NorQuest.
  • You're a thesis student researching outside the transit area for more than two months of the term.
  • Your co-op or work placement is outside the transit service area; apply through your co-op office.

The Augustana shuttle between Camrose and Edmonton

Augustana runs a subsidized shuttle to North Campus on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the fall and winter terms. Tickets cost $12.50 one way by credit card, bought up to two weeks ahead on the U of A Marketplace with your U of A email. It doesn't run on holidays.

It leaves from the K. Glen Johnson Faith and Life Centre in Camrose. On North Campus it stops on 112 Street at 88 Avenue, in front of the Timms Centre for the Arts, at a sign marked for the Campus Saint-Jean shuttle.
