Citizenship, graduation and the eligible degree list
The 2027 national application requires Canadian citizenship and graduation from high school or CEGEP in Canada in the 2026-27 academic year. You must plan to enter an eligible STEM degree at one of the partner universities. Permanent residence alone isn't listed as a qualifying status for this award. Don't borrow the broader citizenship categories used by another national scholarship or by general university entrance awards.
The degree must appear on the official partner-program list. A university being a partner doesn't make every degree it offers eligible. Read the actual program names, including any faculty or campus limits. If a degree combines STEM and another field, ask the program owner rather than assuming a course with mathematics in its title establishes eligibility. The application and FAQ pages refer applicants to the national universities list for that check.

The published career focus and exclusions matter
Schulich seeks an entrepreneurial mindset, described through leadership, charisma and creativity, with strong consideration for financial need. It identifies intended careers in technology, engineering, entrepreneurship and business enterprise, or applied scientific research. Academic excellence is implied by university acceptance. The FAQ says the nominee doesn't have to be the highest academic student in the graduating class. It doesn't publish a universal scholarship percentage cutoff.
The awarding body explicitly excludes applicants focused on activism, specified practising-health and medical-research careers, and careers in academia or theoretical research. Its examples include doctors, dentists, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists and optometrists. We report those exclusions as the program states them; they aren't advice to change your real career plans to fit an application. If your intended career sits near a boundary, ask the national office before interpreting an eligible degree as sufficient on its own.

Nomination limits are set by the national program
Every Canadian high school can normally nominate one graduating student per academic year. CEGEPs can nominate four. The current 2027 page also permits two nominees from a school that had a 2026 Schulich Leader. That exception is tied to the school's previous recipient, not an extra nomination whenever two students have excellent grades. Ask your guidance counsellor whether the exception applies to your school.
The school submits the nominee and its contact information, and the national office verifies nominations. The January 27, 2027 deadline belongs to that school stage. Your school's internal selection can happen earlier, so contact the guidance office before the national closing date. The program doesn't accept a self-nominated direct pool. A student can't bypass a school's selection simply by completing an admission application to a partner university.

The nominee application has several separate components
After verification, the nominee receives an emailed link to the online scholarship application. The current form asks for three achievements, each up to 50 words, and a 50-word description of career aspirations ten years ahead. It also asks for three essays up to 250 words each about passion, entrepreneurial mindset and a meaningful risk, plus an optional 250-word response about extenuating circumstances. Use the current form rather than an older essay checklist.
The application also includes a one-minute video, an up-to-date transcript or permitted detailed academic record, and a headshot for publicity. Prepare those files in the required format and check upload completion. The February 17, 2027 deadline includes the whole scholarship application. An incomplete video or missing transcript can leave an application unfinished even if every written response has been saved.

Referees receive their upload link after you submit
You provide contact details for two referees. The program says they receive the online reference request after you submit your completed scholarship application. Both reference letters must be received by February 17, 2027 as well. If you submit at the final moment, the referees may have no time to complete their part. Arrange availability in advance and submit early enough for the reference workflow.
The official letter guidelines specify no more than one page, addressed to the Schulich Leader Scholarships Selection Committee, with referee contact details for verification. Referees write their own accounts of your work. Give them the official link and accurate background rather than a letter written by an adviser to sign. Check they received the invitation and completed the upload. A submitted student form alone doesn't confirm that both reference letters have arrived.

Universities make the final scholarship selections
Each partner university uses its own adjudication committee and rubric. The national program publishes broad criteria, but it doesn't publish one common points table for all partners. Its 2027 application page gives a winner-confirmation period of March 8 to June 15, 2027. The FAQ says universities can make offers earlier within the selection process and have their own notification methods and acceptance deadlines.
A nominee can identify partner universities where they have applied or intend to apply. The FAQ requires completing a selected university's admission application by March 1 of the academic year if it wasn't already submitted. Admission still has its own program documents and supplements. If one university offers Schulich funding while you're waiting for another, ask about the award's response deadline rather than assuming the national June 15 completion date keeps every offer open until then.

Value, annual payments and continuation conditions
Engineering recipients receive $30,000 before each academic year, for a four-year total of $120,000. Recipients in other eligible STEM degrees receive $25,000 annually, totalling $100,000. These are annual payments, not the entire scholarship paid in first year. The university distributes the funds and the recipient should read its payment and account instructions. Use the first-year amount when comparing immediate tuition and living costs.
The national FAQ says the award may be withdrawn if the student fails to pass a year, commits a felony, leaves full-time attendance or changes away from an eligible STEM area. It doesn't impose one national renewal GPA number across all universities. Read the offered conditions and ask the university before changing course load or degree. The funds aren't transferable between universities, and a possible one-year deferral depends on the university's policies.

Other awards, official differences and honest preparation
The national FAQ sets no general restriction on holding other awards. Universities can still restrict combinations. Western's official page, for example, says Schulich recipients can't also receive its listed automatic admission scholarships. uOttawa's overview lists January 27 as the Schulich deadline, while the national source clarifies it is the nomination stage and February 17 is the student-and-reference stage. Keep both distinctions visible when using a university summary.
Prepare from the actual published questions and your own experiences. There isn't an official essay formula that guarantees a recipient offer. You write all responses and create your video yourself; any feedback must follow the current award's assistance and authorship rules. A consultation can help check the timeline, eligible programs and missing application steps. Continue looking at other appropriate funding routes while selected universities consider your nomination, because being a nominee doesn't guarantee a scholarship.
