Check the current 2027 eligibility screen
Loran's how-to-apply page requires first entry to university in September 2027 and Canadian citizenship or permanent residence. High-school applicants need a minimum cumulative average of 88%; CEGEP applicants need an R score of at least 29. The current entry page gives birth dates between January 1, 2005 and September 1, 2011 for both groups. Use the current page when checking age rather than a previous year's copied summary.
The FAQ explains that current university or college students aren't eligible, with the CEGEP exception. Canadian citizens or permanent residents studying outside Canada can apply if they meet the other conditions. A gap year or unusual school history should be checked against the first-entry and age requirements rather than assumed eligible. If you need an accommodation, the official entry page invites you to contact Loran before attempting a process you can't access.

Calculate the high-school average Loran actually asks for
The current FAQ says the high-school 88% average includes Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 level courses. Grade 9 level courses don't count, even if taken during Grade 10. It describes weighting grades by course credits and entering the resulting average to two decimal places. This isn't an Ontario admission top six or a Grade 12-only average. Use the transcript and official calculation instructions rather than selecting only your strongest subjects.
If significant barriers affected your academic performance, the FAQ permits requesting consideration for averages in the 86% to 88% range or CEGEP R scores in the 28 to 29 range. You must email Loran explaining the circumstances. That isn't automatic eligibility below the published minimum, and an adviser shouldn't promise approval. Keep a written response from the Foundation if it confirms an exception relevant to your application.

The current package is larger than older summaries
Loran's current how-it-works page values the award at approximately $150,000 over four undergraduate years. It lists an annual $12,000 stipend, an annual full tuition waiver at a partner university and up to $14,000 for summer experiential learning. It also describes mentorship, retreats, peer community and the leadership-enrichment program. Those are several forms of support, not one first-year cash payment.
Some official university summaries still describe older packages, including Alberta's description of up to $100,000. The current awarding-body page states approximately $150,000. We keep both statements visible rather than forcing the older university summary to match silently. Confirm the actual package and partner tuition arrangement with Loran and the university before budgeting. The value depends on the program and benefits; don't imply the full advertised total will be deposited into your bank account.

Written submission unlocks the two videos
The application includes short answers, several short essays and two video responses. You upload an eligible transcript or marks summary as a PDF. Loran says a report card isn't accepted, the PDF shouldn't be cropped, and your full name, student number and issuing body's letterhead must be visible. Request the document early from your guidance office, school board or education ministry.
For the 2027 cycle, the video questions become available only after you submit the written application. The responses are timed and can't be reviewed or redone. Completing the written part at the deadline can therefore leave no time for the videos. Review the official tutorial, check your equipment and complete every stage before noon Eastern time on October 15, 2026. The written component alone isn't a finished application.

The referee form is independent and online
Choose a teacher, coach, employer or community leader who knows your work. The referee can't be a family member or friend. Enter their preferred email early; Loran automatically sends access instructions. The online recommendation is up to 250 words and must be submitted by the application deadline. Loran doesn't accept an attached letter as a replacement for that form.
The referee can work on the recommendation while you complete your application. Confirm they received the invitation and have time to submit it. The Foundation suggests checking spam if the message hasn't arrived within two hours and lets you track reference progress after submission. If the person can't complete the task, contact Loran about changing the referee. The FAQ doesn't grant an extension just because a referee is away, so have a realistic availability conversation before entering the contact.

Character, service and leadership are the published criteria
Loran's selection approach looks beyond grades for strength of character, service and exceptional leadership potential. Its qualities page describes curiosity, perseverance, humility and trustworthiness, commitment to contributing to communities and willingness to act. The academic minimum is a screen; being above it doesn't create a ranking formula or a guarantee of an interview.
Reflect on genuine work and decisions you can describe in your own words. Explain your role and contribution without turning ordinary participation into a fabricated leadership title. There isn't an official essay pattern, volunteer-hour minimum or activity combination that guarantees selection. Loran's educator guidance encourages adults to identify and support promising applicants, but that isn't permission for someone else to write their responses. You create the application and videos yourself and follow the current assistance rules.

Interviews and smaller awards have their own outcomes
The current process page describes online semi-final interviews in early to mid-December, followed by results in mid-to-late December. It says around 90 finalists proceed to national selections. The current FAQ gives February 18 to 21, 2027 in Toronto for national interviews, and the process page describes the newest scholar class being announced in March. An interview invitation is a selection stage, not an offer of the full award.
Loran also lists up to 54 one-time $6,000 Finalist Awards and up to 70 one-time $3,000 Provincial and Territorial Awards. Those smaller awards are tenable for full-time study at an accredited public Canadian university and aren't the same partner-university tuition package as the four-year Loran Award. Keep the award name and conditions from the final notice. A semi-final or finalist outcome shouldn't be reported as winning the full advertised package.

Renewal, official wording conflicts and the next action
The current how-it-works page describes responsibilities including living in residence in first year, living independently in the university community later, and maintaining at least a B-plus or 77% cumulative GPA. The award is renewable for up to four years and includes participation in the enrichment program. These expectations are part of the offered experience, not simply a recurring payment for keeping the original high-school average.
The FAQ uses past tense when describing October 15, 2026 in one answer, but another answer identifies the same date as the upcoming deadline for the 2027 award. The educator page also calls it the “2026 Loran Award” while giving that same October 2026 date. We preserve the cycle-label inconsistency and tell readers to confirm if an instruction conflicts. The 2027 eligibility and application pages control this guide's entry year. Start early, ensure the reference and videos are complete, and keep a separate admission and confirmed-funding plan while selection continues.
