Yes, many universities in Canada accept WASSCE, NECO, two A-levels, IB courses and the Duolingo English Test for Fall 2027, but each one writes its own rule. IGCSE alone isn't enough at the universities we checked. The GED splits schools: Waterloo reviews it, and Regina turns it down. Three or four years of English schooling can replace IELTS.

Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most pages below carry no intake year, so we treat them as the current rules for 2027 planning. Where a page names a term, such as Memorial's Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 split, we give that date. Each section ends with the page that covers the credential in full.

Many "accept" searches are about master's study, such as an HND or a 2.2 degree. Those are graduate rules and fall outside this index. Everything here is for students leaving high school.

How to read this index

Each section answers one search. It names two to four universities that publish a clear rule, then sends you to the page that owns the topic. We picked examples that the deeper pages don't lead with, so the two sets work together. If your credential has its own guide, read that guide next.

One word causes most of the confusion. "Accept" can mean the university will read your file. It doesn't mean you'll get an offer. Every row below is a floor. Programs with limited space can ask for more, and several pages say so in plain words.

WASSCE and NECO

West African students have the widest choice in this index. Memorial accepts either the WAEC Senior Secondary Certificate or the NECO Senior School Certificate. Its grade rule is changing. Up to Fall 2026, a C6 in each required subject could work. From Winter 2027, Memorial wants a C4 average across those subjects, with a pass in each.

uOttawa asks for WAEC or WASSCE results with a minimum 75% average. Its Nigeria page adds that students who completed NECO are also eligible. Dalhousie lets Nigerian students send WAEC details with a PIN, or NECO results verified online. Guelph looks for a B3 or better on predicted grades, then a scratch card to confirm final results.

York keeps it short. Its country rows for Nigeria and Liberia list WASSCE or WAEC examination results as the credential. The row doesn't name a grade, so check the program page for averages and required subjects.

Two habits help with any of these. Keep your scratch card details safe, because more than one university asks for them. Then match your subjects to each program's list before you apply. Our WAEC and WASSCE guide covers grade scales and verification. The Nigeria and Ghana guides cover country steps.

IGCSE or O-levels on their own

This is the search with the shortest answer. For Fall 2027, none of the universities we checked admits a student on IGCSE alone. Memorial came closest. Up to Fall 2026, it listed an exception for students with A* or 9 in every required IGCSE subject. Its rule for Winter 2027 and later leaves that line out.

Others ask for something on top. Dalhousie's British row wants two A Levels or four AS Levels, plus five GCSE subjects. For Singapore O Levels alone, it asks for a year of university or polytechnic as well. McGill will look at students who finished only lower Form VI with AS results. It says it does this only by exception, and only with clearly superior GCSE marks.

So what can an IGCSE student do? Finish AS or A Levels, sit a full high school diploma, or complete a recognized first year of college. Your IGCSE grades still count once you add the next stage. Several universities use them for English and earlier maths. The A-levels guide shows how each university pairs the two.

The GED and the CAEC

Waterloo's page names two high school equivalency credentials: the GED and the Canadian Adult Education Credential, or CAEC. Universities treat them in very different ways. Waterloo reviews either one on an individual basis. It says the credential meets its high school diploma rule. You still need every required course for your program.

That catch matters. Waterloo says GED results are not equal to Ontario Grade 12 U or M courses. If you're missing a subject, it accepts Ontario courses through the Independent Learning Centre or a local school board. It also accepts Advanced Placement courses.

Other universities say no. Regina's 2026-2027 calendar says it doesn't accept the GED or the CAEC for admission to any faculty. Memorial asks American-curriculum students for a high school diploma from a state-recognized school. It says the GED isn't acceptable for that rule. If you're an adult who left school early, read the mature students guide for the routes built around that case.

IB certificate versus the IB Diploma

The IB Diploma is widely accepted. IB certificates and the Career-related Programme are another matter. Memorial says IB certificate and career programs aren't acceptable unless you've also earned another recognized high school diploma. TMU accepts the IBCP when it comes with a high school diploma. It can't replace that diploma.

Laurier frames it from the other side. If you take IB courses along with another curriculum, it assesses your whole academic record. So your school diploma carries the file, and the IB courses add strength to it. Ask your school which diploma you'll receive, and put that name on every application.

The IB requirements guide compares diploma points, predicted grades and more certificate rules across twelve universities.

Two A-levels instead of three

Plenty of schools offer only two full A Levels. Several Canadian universities publish a route for that. TMU asks for two or more A Levels, with predicted and final grades of B in one and C in another. It also wants three GCSE, IGCSE or O Level subject areas with set grades. General Paper and General Studies don't count.

Guelph asks for two A Level passes and three IGCSE passes. Two AS courses can replace one A Level. Manitoba asks for two A Level courses and three at GCSE, IGCSE or O Level. Memorial accepts two A Levels or three AS Levels with IGCSE. Laurier's chart sets a minimum of two A Level subjects.

Read the subject rules before you relax. TMU requires A Level Math for Engineering and for Accounting and Finance. A two-subject timetable leaves little room for a missing prerequisite. The A-levels guide covers McGill, SFU, Dalhousie and others in depth, along with predicted grades and transfer credit.

The Duolingo English Test

Every university in this section lists Duolingo. The totals and part-score rules are where they differ. Guelph asks for 110 overall and says it may consider individual subscores. Memorial asks for 115 overall. Carleton asks for 120, with set minimums in writing, reading, speaking and listening.

Alberta asks for 120 with no integrated subscore below 100. It lists Duolingo as valid through the 2028-2029 admission cycle. SFU asks for 125 and won't consider any language test taken more than 24 months before you apply. Guelph and Memorial use a two-year limit as well.

Send scores the way each university asks. SFU and Carleton want you to pick the university as a recipient inside your Duolingo account. Dalhousie asks for results sent to it from Duolingo directly. Memorial asks you to upload final results to its portal, and says it must be able to verify them with the test provider.

Carleton adds a second door. A lower Duolingo score, starting at 80 with part minimums, can bring an offer that includes Academic ESL courses. You'd take those alongside a smaller course load. Our English tests guide compares Duolingo with IELTS, TOEFL and CAEL at ten other universities.

Studying in Canada without IELTS

IELTS is one proof among several. The most common other proof is schooling in English. Dalhousie generally accepts three years at a recognized English-based high school. Laurier asks for your three most recent years in English, with no English as a Second Language courses. Your guidance counsellor can confirm this by email from a work address.

Carleton also counts three years of full-time study in English. It says letters from educators won't waive the rule, so send transcripts instead. If you don't qualify, another test can stand in. Dalhousie, Laurier and Memorial all list Duolingo and CAEL next to IELTS.

There's a third route for students who are close. Dalhousie may make a conditional offer if you finish another test or an approved English pathway. Memorial may give early acceptance if you enrol in its Intensive English Program at Grenfell Campus. Laurier can make a conditional offer when your grades meet the program but your English proof doesn't yet.

Master's searches are a different question

Searches such as "universities in Canada that accept HND" or "accept a 2.2" come from graduate applicants. Graduate schools set those rules, and they don't apply to Grade 12 students. If you're finishing high school or a foundation year, the rows above are the ones to use.

Where to go next

Start with your credential page: CSEC and CXC, WAEC and WASSCE, A-levels, IB or SAT and AP. Caribbean students without CAPE can read the CSEC-only guide and the CAPE guide.

Then read your country guide. Options include the UK, the USA, Pakistan, India, Kenya and Jamaica. If your record came from more than one system, the credential evaluation guide explains when an outside report helps.

Last, check money and dates. The international student guide covers study permits and current proof of funds. Compare awards in the international scholarship guide. Put every date into the application deadline guide before you order transcripts.
