For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with A-levels. Most ask for three A-levels plus GCSE subjects. McGill publishes typical predicted ranges, such as AAA to ABB for Arts. You don't use UCAS. You apply through OUAC as a Group B applicant for Ontario, or on each university's own site.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. University rules below are current pages, and most carry no intake year. Dated 2027 deadlines are labelled. Fees are shown with their own year, and planned figures are marked as planned.
A-levels, AS and GCSEs in Canadian terms
A Canadian school calls the last two years Grades 11 and 12. Your Year 12 and Year 13 cover the same stage. Canadian admissions offices read your GCSEs as earlier work and your A-levels as the senior record. Most of them want to see both.
GOV.UK puts A levels and AS levels at level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. GCSE grades 9 to 4, or A* to C, sit at level 2. T Levels also appear at level 3 on that list. A shared level on the UK list doesn't mean a Canadian school treats the awards the same way.
U of T says BTEC National, Cambridge Technical and T-Level awards aren't accepted in place of AS or A-level subjects. Queen's will look at a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma one case at a time. McMaster also reviews BTEC case by case. It says most programs want one or two A-levels alongside it. If your timetable mixes BTEC and A-levels, ask each school before you apply.
Some subjects don't count. U of T leaves out General Paper, General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills, Key Skills and AS Global Perspectives and Research. Queen's leaves out the General Paper. UBC says it won't use subjects it judges not academic enough. McGill counts Maths and Further Maths as a single subject.
Scottish Highers get less coverage. York lists the Scottish Qualifications Certificate at Higher level for Scotland. Western asks for Higher level results showing at least four subjects. We didn't find a Highers rule on the other pages used here. If you're in Scotland, ask each school how it reads Highers and Advanced Highers.
Two A-levels or three?
Three is the usual answer. U of T asks for five GCSE-level subjects and three A-levels. It will also consider four AS subjects instead of three A-levels for most programs. Queen's wants five subjects, with three at A-level and two at GCSE level.
McGill accepts three A-levels or two A-levels with two AS subjects, all in three different subjects. McMaster asks for three A2 subjects. With two A2 subjects and four or more AS subjects, you'll be considered individually. Western accepts three A-levels or four AS subjects, with a B average.
UBC counts subject areas, not exam papers. You need six academic areas across GCSE, AS and A-level, including English. At least three must be A-levels, or six must be AS subjects. A subject can't count at both A-level and GCSE. Waterloo asks for five different subjects, with three at Advanced Level. Alberta asks for three approved A-levels.
So a plain two A-level offer isn't a route on these pages. York's UK row names A-levels without giving a count. uOttawa's country table wasn't available when we checked, so confirm its A-level rule with uOttawa. If your school only lets you take two, raise it with admissions before you pay a fee. Our A-levels guide for Canadian universities compares more schools, including ones outside this list.

| University | Official UK rule | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Five GCSE-level and three A-level subjects; four AS considered for most programs. | No A-level grade range is published. Offers rest on earlier grades and in-term results. |
| McGill | Three A-levels, or two A-levels and two AS, in three subjects. Typical ranges by program. | Ranges are past guidelines. Earth, Geographic and Climate Sciences shows TBD for Fall 2027. |
| UBC | Six academic subject areas, with three A-levels or six AS. C or better in English. | A past B average is described. Degree subjects differ, such as A-level Maths for Engineering. |
| Queen's | Three A-levels and two GCSE subjects. Competitive A-level grades are B or higher. | Commerce asks for A-level Maths at A and an IGCSE English grade of A or 7. |
| Western | B average in three A-levels or four AS. C in five GCSE subjects. | BBB is the usual floor for a good chance. AAA is usual for scholarships. |
| McMaster | Three A2 subjects and two GCSE subjects. Maths and sciences at A2. | Two A2 with four AS is reviewed case by case. Grade levels aren't given here. |
| Waterloo | Five subjects, three at Advanced Level. Program grades are listed. | Computer Science lists A in Maths and two other A-levels. AIF still required. |
| York | GCE O-level and A-level results; Scottish Higher results for Scotland. | No count or grade appears in the row. Confirm program subjects separately. |
| uOttawa | Language page lists the UK for exemptions. A or AS English at B also qualifies. | Its country entry table wasn't available when we checked; confirm with uOttawa. Most international programs close in May. |
| Alberta | Three approved A-levels from its approved subject list. | Predicted grades for a final decision must be issued on or after March 1. Averages change yearly. |
What predicted grades the pages show
McGill gives the most detail. Its typical ranges include AAA to ABB for Arts and AAA to AAB for Management. Mechanical Engineering shows AAA to AAA. Bioengineering shows AAA to AAA. Most Science groups show AAA to AAB, and Nursing shows BBB.
McGill is careful about what those ranges mean. It calls them guidelines and says they may not match the grades for the next intake. Space is limited, so the lowest admitted grades move each year. Use the range to place yourself, not to promise yourself an offer.
Say your school predicts AAA. That sits inside McGill's listed Management range and most Science ranges. It's above the listed Arts range. Your subjects still matter, though. AAA without A-level Maths won't meet the Management prerequisite.
Western says BBB usually gives you the best chance at the minimum level. It says AAA is usually needed for scholarships and its most competitive programs, such as AEO and Scholar's Electives. Queen's calls B or higher competitive. UBC says a B average, mostly A and B grades, was needed in past years.
Waterloo prints minimum final grades for each program. Computer Science lists an A in A-level Maths and A grades in two other academic A-levels. Computer Engineering lists A grades in Maths and Physics and a B in a third A-level. It adds that A and A* grades are recommended.
U of T doesn't publish an A-level range on the pages we read. It makes conditional offers from your previous year's grades and any in-term results. The U of T engineering requirements guide shows how one program reads Maths and Physics.
Subject rules that decide your shortlist
Pick your degree before you rank schools. U of T wants English at GCSE, AS or A-level for every program. It wants Maths at AS or A-level where a program needs calculus. Other required subjects should be at AS or A-level.
Engineering is the strictest area. UBC asks for A-level Maths and A-level Chemistry or Physics, plus GCSE Chemistry and Physics. It prefers students with both sciences at A-level. Queen's asks for Maths and either Chemistry or Physics at A-level. McGill wants two of Maths, Chemistry and Physics at A-level.
Western Engineering lists Chemistry, Physics and Maths, and these can be AS or A-level. It also needs the Casper test. Western says it can't make an offer until those results arrive. McMaster wants Maths and science subjects at A2 unless a program says otherwise.
Business is different again. UBC Sauder asks for Maths at A or AS level. Queen's Commerce wants A-level Maths with a predicted or final A. Western Management lists Maths. Health Sciences at Queen's wants Biology and Chemistry at A-level, plus a strong IGCSE English grade.
Arts degrees are wider open. UBC Arts and Queen's Arts add no subject beyond the general rule, apart from English at GCSE for Queen's. Check the program page, since joint degrees can add a science. The McGill admission requirements guide sets out McGill's subjects in one place.
UCAS, OUAC or the university's own site
UCAS is the UK service. For 2027 entry, its equal consideration date for most courses is January 13, 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses had an earlier date of October 15, 2026. UCAS caps you at five choices. None of that carries over to Canada.
For Ontario, you apply through OUAC, Ontario's university application site. It puts you in Group B if you're an international applicant not taking an Ontario high school course. Group B has no single OUAC deadline. Each university and program sets its own. Leave OUAC time to process your choices before the earliest one.
OUAC's base fee is $159 for three program choices. Each extra choice costs $51. You can pick up to three programs at any one university. Some programs add their own fee. U of T Engineering charges Group B applicants $69 on top. U of T then uses its own applicant portal for documents.
McGill and UBC take applications on their own sites. You'll write new answers there. Your UCAS personal statement isn't a Canadian form, so don't paste it in. UBC asks for a personal profile, and Waterloo uses its own Admission Information Form.
Deadlines for September 2027
U of T lists January 15, 2027 for most first-year programs and a recommended date of November 7. Most documents are due February 1, but Engineering documents are due January 15. Waterloo's deadline is February 1, 2027 for most programs, with documents by February 15. Engineering is January 15, with documents by February 1.
UBC's deadline is January 15, 2027. Proof of its English standard is due February 15. Documents from high school students outside Canada are due March 15, 2027. McGill lists January 15 for the application and March 1 for documents. Its page doesn't print the year beside those dates.
uOttawa suggests applying before January 15, 2027. It wants documents by February 15, or 30 days after you apply. It says most programs for international students close in May. Western lists February 15, 2027 for its Fine Arts portfolio. Its School for Advanced Studies in Arts and Humanities statement is due February 28. Use the Canadian application deadlines guide for a wider list.
Predicted grades, final results and timing
UK results come out in summer. Canadian schools decide earlier, so they lean on predictions. Western asks for its own GCE A Level Predicted Results Form. McGill wants GCSE certificates, Lower and Upper Sixth school reports, any AS results and predicted A-level grades.
Alberta is strict about timing. Its predicted grades must be issued on or after March 1 and sent by your school. If you hold a conditional offer, those March predictions can move you to a final offer. Plan for that date with your school early.
An offer based on predictions usually comes with conditions. Western says it checks final documents and turns a conditional offer into an unconditional one. McGill says it expects your grades to hold through to the end. Ask each school how it treats a final grade that falls below the prediction.
English proof for UK schools
Most UK students qualify through years of study. U of T lists the United Kingdom and Scotland among places where four years of English study may exempt you. It decides only after it sees your records. McGill excuses students who lived and studied for four straight years in a country it lists, and the UK is on that list.
UBC asks for four or more straight years of full-time study in English, right before you start. Those years must be in a country where English is the main language. uOttawa lists the UK and asks for three years of full-time study. Waterloo wants a test only if your four latest years weren't in an English school system.
There are grade routes too. U of T accepts a GCSE English grade of B, or 6, or an A-level or AS grade of C. English Literature doesn't count there. McGill accepts A-level English at C, or GCSE English at B or 5. UBC accepts an A or B in A-level First Language English or English Literature.
uOttawa accepts A or AS English at B, but not GCSE English. Alberta accepts a B or higher in GCSE English Language or Literature. A required English subject is a separate check from English proof, and you may need both. The English tests guide covers the tests if you need one.
Transfer credit for A-levels
Strong final grades can shorten your degree. Named U of T divisions may give up to 3.0 full credits for A-level exams with a B or better. AS subjects earn no credit there. Credit is assessed after admission.
McGill grants up to 30 credits of advanced standing for final official results. Western may give credit for a B, though Economics and English Language aren't eligible. McMaster may give credit for A2 grades of B or better, at the faculty's choice. UBC also offers first-year credit for British-pattern study.
Credit isn't always the smart move. Skipping a first-year course can leave a gap before a hard second-year course. Talk it through with an academic adviser after you accept.
Scholarships: what's open and what's closed
U of T's Pearson Scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence for four years. For September 2027, school nominations closed October 9, 2026. The OUAC application was due October 16. Both dates have passed. The November 6, 2026 deadline is only for students who completed those steps.
UBC International Scholars is open for 2027 entry. You must apply to UBC and finish the award application by November 15, 2026. You need a nominator and a separate teacher referee. Awards are based on financial need as well as results. Nursing and some other degrees aren't eligible.
UBC's merit awards are a separate stream. Its International Major Entrance Scholarship is valued at $10,000 to $25,000 a year for 2026/2027. The value for Fall 2027 is pending. You're considered automatically if you apply by the deadline. McGill's Major Entrance Scholarship application is due January 21. See scholarships for international students for other awards.
Tuition: use the labelled year
U of T's 2026-27 international fee for Arts and Science is $66,110. Engineering is $72,860. Its fee report gives planned 2027-28 fees for students entering in 2027: $68,750 and $75,770. U of T calls those planned figures information only and subject to change.
McGill's 2026-27 schedule covers students admitted in Fall 2026. A Bachelor of Arts lists $54,000 in tuition and $57,569.02 in total fees. A Bachelor of Science lists $64,785.90 in tuition. Engineering lists $65,167.50. McGill guarantees the per-credit rate for that intake, while other fees rise each year. Fall 2027 rates weren't in that document when we checked.
These are international schedules. If you hold Canadian citizenship but went to school in the UK, ask about your fee status before you budget. Compare U of T tuition and fees with McGill tuition and fees for the wider picture.
Study permit, funds and PAL
For applications from September 1, 2026, IRCC asks a single student to show CAN$23,448 for a year of living costs outside Quebec. Tuition and travel come on top. McGill is in Quebec, which sets its own amount. The 2027 figure is pending.
IRCC accepts bank statements from the past six months, a scholarship letter, recent pay stubs or a Canadian investment certificate. Bank statements must show where the money came from. Keep the family records ready before an offer arrives.
You'll need your acceptance letter, a valid passport, photos, proof of funds and a letter explaining your plans. Most students also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL, from the school. IRCC's page explains the 2026 validity rules. Details for the 2027 cap year are still pending.
Build your shortlist
Write down your three A-level subjects and your predicted grades. Check each degree's required subjects first, then its grade guide. Keep one school where your predictions sit well above the listed range. The international students guide and the credential evaluation guide can help with records. Parents can use the international families guide for funding questions.
