For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with the German Abitur, the Allgemeine Hochschulreife. Ten universities we checked name it, including U of T, McGill and UBC. You can apply before your final results. Your subjects, your Abitur grades and your English proof then decide each program.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most university rules below have no intake year. Dated 2027 deadlines are labelled. Grade figures are shown only where a university publishes them, with the limits it states.
What Canadian universities mean by the Abitur
Canadian pages use several German names for the same award. U of T lists the Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife, Abitur and Reifezeugnis together. McMaster uses the same three names. Waterloo writes Allgemeine Hochschulreife or Abitur. Pick the German school system on each form, then upload the certificate as your school issues it.
The German ministers' conference, the KMK, sets the shared frame. Your upper school has an introduction phase of one year and a qualification phase of two years. The Abitur exam covers four or five subjects. At least two of them must be at the higher requirement level, called erhöhtes Anforderungsniveau. Two must come from German, a foreign language and mathematics.
Your final Abitur grade isn't only the exam. The KMK says results from the qualification phase also count in the overall grade. You pass with an average of at least 4. Many Canadian universities review your grades before that final certificate exists. So your class results in the last two years matter a lot.
The KMK also says school runs 12 or 13 years before the Abitur, depending on the state. None of the Canadian pages we read ties acceptance to 12 or 13 years. They name the credential itself. If you're in a shorter state program, there's no published reason to delay your application.
The Fachhochschulreife is a different award. None of the ten Canadian pages names it. McGill says studies at vocational or technical high schools are not normally eligible. If you hold that award, write to admissions before you apply. Ask whether it fits any first-year route. Keep the reply with your records.

| University | Official Germany rule | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Names the Allgemeine Hochschulreife, Abitur and Reifezeugnis. Engineering wants senior Mathematics with Calculus, Physics, Chemistry and English. | No Abitur grade target is published. Germany isn't on the English exemption list. |
| McGill | Lists the Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abitur). Minimum is a B+ equivalent; most programs ask for more. | Prerequisites must come from your last two school years. Ask how its Bologna note affects your program length. |
| UBC | Abitur required. Past years needed an average of 11 of 15 points, or 2 on the 6-point scale. | That figure changes by degree and year. Engineering lists Pre-Calculus Math, Chemistry and Physics. |
| Waterloo | Allgemeine Hochschulreife or Abitur. Mechanical Engineering lists calculus, physics, chemistry and English. | Engineering also needs the Admission Information Form and an online interview. Grades must be competitive. |
| Queen's | Names the Abitur. Smith Engineering lists senior Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. | Commerce wants senior Mathematics of at least 80% or equivalent and a supplementary application. |
| McMaster | Names the Reifezeugnis, Abitur and Allgemeine Hochschulreife. | Its Germany entry lists no subject or grade rule. Check the program page and email admissions. |
| Western | Abitur certificate with all subjects and grades. Admitted students typically have at least a B (3.0) equivalent. | Engineering needs Chemistry, Physics, Math and the Casper test. Final papers go through WES. |
| York | Names the Abitur or Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife. | The page was last updated February 21, 2024. Meeting the minimum isn't enough on its own. |
| Laurier | Six senior academic courses. Publishes its own chart for the 15-point scale. | Its chart is for Laurier's review. Other universities may read the same mark differently. |
| SFU | Abitur with interim senior-year marks. Needs at least C- (60%) in senior Mathematics. | Engineering Science lists Math, Chemistry and Physics. The 60% figure is a floor, not a target. |
How your Abitur grades are read
Canadian pages refer to two German scales. One runs from 0 to 15 points. The other runs from 1 to 6, where 1 is best. Laurier's chart and UBC's note use both. Keep both on your transcript and don't convert them yourself on the form.
Laurier is the only one of these schools that publishes a full chart. It turns 15 points into 97%, 13 into 92% and 11 into 85%. A 10 becomes 82% and a 9 becomes 77%. A 5 becomes 57% and a 4 becomes 52%. Laurier says the chart reflects a 50% pass. It uses the chart to work out your Laurier average.
UBC states a range, not a chart. It says that in past years an average of 11 on the 15-point scale was needed. It gives the same level as 2 on the 6-point scale. UBC adds that grades differ by degree and vary each year. So an 11 doesn't promise an offer in 2027, and a 10 doesn't rule you out.
Western says admitted students typically have the equivalent of at least a B (3.0). It works out your average from your curriculum and grading scale. McGill names a B+ equivalent as its minimum and says most programs ask for more. Neither school publishes a German point score for those letters. Don't borrow Laurier's percentages to guess them.
U of T, Waterloo, Queen's, McMaster and York don't publish an Abitur grade target on the pages we read. Waterloo only says you need competitive grades in your senior years. When a school gives no number, look at your subject marks in the required courses. Those are the marks a reviewer checks first.
Engineering subjects in German school terms
Every engineering program we checked wants senior mathematics, physics and chemistry. U of T and Waterloo also name calculus. In a German upper school, those subjects may be courses at the basic or the higher level. None of the Canadian pages says the higher level is required. They ask for the subject at the senior level.
Check that you're still taking chemistry and physics in your final two years. McGill says its prerequisites must be finished during the last two years of high school. U of T accepts an Ontario Grade 12 course from an accredited school if you can't present a subject. That's a fix for a missing course, not a way around its review.
UBC is a little more flexible here. It says strong candidates missing either senior chemistry or senior physics may be reviewed case by case. It still lists Pre-Calculus math, chemistry and physics as the minimum. Don't plan around the exception. Ask UBC before you drop a science.
Your math course name may not match Canadian labels. Waterloo asks for algebra, called pre-calculus, and calculus. Laurier and Western say they may ask for detailed course descriptions. Ask your school now for a short description of your math course. It should show whether you studied calculus, so a reviewer can see the content.
Engineering also has extra steps. Waterloo needs its Admission Information Form and an online interview for every engineering program. Western wants the Casper test, and results can take three weeks to arrive. U of T charges a CAN$69 Engineering Supplemental Assessment Fee and needs its own supplemental application. Compare programs on the Engineering requirements guide, then read UBC Engineering and Waterloo Engineering.
Applying before your final Abitur results
Most Canadian deadlines for September 2027 fall in January or February 2027. If your Abitur certificate isn't ready by then, you apply with earlier school reports. McGill asks for your transcript with interim, mid-year or first-semester results from the final year. SFU asks for a transcript with interim marks for your senior year.
Laurier tells Grade 12 students to list all courses in progress. To clear its conditions, Laurier needs the official Abitur certificate with final grades, sent directly from your school. U of T Engineering says you can upload a transcript showing you're enrolled in the prerequisites if you have no interim grades yet. You then send an update when you have one.
An offer before results is usually conditional. Western says it normally wants proof that you graduated and kept your grades above a set average. After you accept, Western wants your final papers sent by your school to WES Canada. It asks for a WES Basic document-by-document report. Read your own offer for the exact terms.
Documents, translation and English proof
Your German papers may need English versions. Western says everything you send must be in English. If your transcript isn't, you must add a notarized literal English translation. UBC's Germany entry says certificates must be official. It accepts photocopies certified by your principal, head or counsellor, but not notarized copies. These two rules differ, so follow each school's own instruction.
For English, there are two separate questions. Do you need a senior English course, and do you need a test score? U of T requires a senior English course for all programs. It asks for proof of English if English isn't your first language, unless you qualify for an exemption. Its list of exemption countries doesn't include Germany.
Several schools waive the test after four years at an English-medium school. UBC accepts four years at an eligible international school using English, in a country where English isn't the main language. If your school is bilingual, UBC wants an English waiver request. McMaster names four years at an accredited English-medium school, and says the exemption isn't automatic.
Waterloo asks for a test score unless your four most recent full-time years were in an English-language school system. It wants your transcripts or a principal's letter showing the language of instruction. SFU accepts the last four years at a recognized international school taught in English. McGill exempts students who lived and studied for four years where English is the main language.
If you're at a regular German Gymnasium, plan on taking a test. Book it early so scores arrive before each document deadline. Compare accepted tests in the English test guide. For papers, the credential-evaluation guide explains when a school wants an outside report.
Deadlines for September 2027
Waterloo has dated 2027 deadlines. Engineering applications are due January 15, 2027, with documents by February 1, 2027. Other programs are due February 1, 2027, with documents by February 15, 2027. Waterloo says international students have the same dates.
UBC's application deadline for September 2027 is January 15, 2027. Its deadline to meet the English standard is February 15, 2027. McGill lists January 15 for applications and March 1 for documents, without a year on the page. U of T Engineering lists November 7 for early applications and December 1 for documents. Its regular deadline is January 15.
These dates are not all the same kind. An application date closes the form. A document date is when your file must be complete. The application-deadline guide lists more schools. Check the McGill deadline page before you build your calendar.
Scholarships: what is open and what has passed
UBC International Scholars is open for 2027 entry. It's for students with significant financial need who enter directly from high school. You must have graduated no earlier than June 2026. You need a school nominator and a different teacher referee. Your UBC application and award form are due November 15, 2026. Documents and English proof are due January 31, 2027.
If you apply to International Scholars, UBC won't consider you for its merit awards. Some degrees, including Nursing and dual degrees, aren't eligible. Your family will need to show income, expenses and assets. Start talking with your school now, since the nominator forms must arrive a few days before November 15, 2026.
U of T's Pearson scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. For September 2027, schools had to nominate by October 9, 2026. The admission deadline for Pearson was October 16, 2026. Both have passed. November 6, 2026 is only for students who were nominated and applied in time.
McGill lists January 21 for its Major Entrance Scholarship application and documents. U of T Engineering considers you for its International Scholar Award if you fill in the financial section in its portal. Carleton gives automatic entrance scholarships worth CAN$4,000 to CAN$12,000 over four years to eligible students. Browse more in scholarships for international students.
Tuition and living costs, with years
In these examples, engineering costs more than arts. UBC's 2026/27 first-year engineering load costs CAN$66,199.66. Its Arts load costs CAN$51,530.40. UBC hasn't published Fall 2027 rates yet, so treat these as last year's figures. See UBC tuition and fees.
Waterloo estimates two terms of engineering at CAN$75,000, plus CAN$1,500 for books. Arts is CAN$58,000. Waterloo says these are based on students starting in September 2026. Fees for September 2027 aren't on the page. Check Waterloo tuition and fees again before you pay a deposit.
Carleton already shows tuition for 2027/2028 and 2028/2029. The group that includes Engineering costs CAN$55,000 a year, and most arts and science degrees cost CAN$39,000. Carleton says these rates are frozen for both years. Its residence and meal figure of CAN$14,010 is labelled 2026 fees. Compare with Carleton tuition and fees.
Study permit money and paperwork
IRCC asks you to show CAN$23,448 for one person's living costs outside Quebec. That amount applies to applications made on or after September 1, 2026. Tuition and travel costs come on top. Quebec uses its own figure, set by the province. The amount could change before you apply in 2027.
IRCC accepts bank statements for the past six months as proof. It also accepts letters from people who support you, and scholarship papers. Your application also needs your letter of acceptance and a letter explaining why you want to study in Canada. A student under 17 travelling without a parent needs a custodian.
Most undergraduate students also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL. Your university gets it for you. IRCC lists validity dates for the 2025 and 2026 cap years only. The 2027 dates are pending, so check that page before you apply. The international-students guide and the guide for international families explain the next steps.
Build your shortlist
Start with the subjects you're taking now. Match each engineering or science program against its list of required courses. Ask your school for course descriptions and interim reports early. Book an English test unless a school confirms your waiver. Then compare costs using the labelled fee year, and keep one option your family can afford without an award.
