For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with Bangladesh's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC). U of T, UBC, York, McGill and six other universities name it today. GPA 5.00 is the top board grade point. Each university still converts your marks its own way and sets its own subjects and English proof.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. Most country rules below carry no intake year. Fees and awards show the year each university printed. Anything not yet published for 2027 is marked pending.
What your HSC result sheet shows
Your result sheet uses letter grades and grade points. The Dhaka Education Board's 2024 HSC result book prints the scale. A+ is 80 to 100 marks and earns 5 grade points. An A is 70 to 79 marks and earns 4. An A- is 60 to 69 and earns 3.5. A D is 33 to 39 and earns 1. Below 33 is an F.
That means a GPA 5.00 tells a reader that every counted subject sat in the top band. It doesn't tell them your exact marks. Canadian universities usually care about each subject. So send records that show every subject and grade you earned. Western asks for a certificate that lists all subjects studied and the grades earned.
Some universities publish their own conversion. Laurier turns an A+ into 95%, an A into 81% and an A- into 73%. A B becomes 66%, and a C becomes 59%. Laurier says its figures reflect a 33% pass. These numbers belong to Laurier's review. Don't use them to judge your chances at another school.
UBC gives a different kind of number. It says that in past years an average of 74% on Bangladesh's grading scale was needed for an offer. It also says the grade you'll need changes by degree and by year. Treat 74% as history, not a 2027 cut-off. UBC hasn't published a Fall 2027 figure for Bangladesh.
Your SSC still matters. Memorial asks for your current Higher Secondary interim transcript and your Secondary marksheet when you apply. Alberta's early admission asks for your final Grade 11 record and Grade 12 results to date. Keep your SSC and HSC papers together. Make sure your name matches on both.
How ten universities read the HSC
How ten universities read the HSC comparison tableSwipe or scroll horizontally
| University | Official Bangladesh rule | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Higher Secondary Certificate. A senior English course is required for every program. | No HSC average is published. Bangladesh isn't on its English exemption country list. |
| UBC | HSC or Intermediate Certificate. In past years, 74% on Bangladesh's scale was needed. | That figure is historical. Degree minimums differ, such as Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics for Science. |
| York | Higher Secondary Certificate. | York says meeting its minimums isn't a guarantee. Check program subjects and English proof. |
| McGill | Intermediate or Higher Secondary School Certificate, First Division. | Ask McGill how it reads First Division on a grade-point result sheet before you apply. |
| Western | HSC showing all subjects and grades. | Final documents go through WES as a document-by-document ICAP report after you accept. |
| Laurier | HSC or Intermediate Examination Certificate. All senior academic HSC subjects count. | It may ask for course descriptions for Statistics. Its grade conversion is its own. |
| SFU | HSC transcript with interim senior marks. At least 60% in senior Mathematics. | Faculties add subjects. Engineering needs Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. |
| Manitoba | HSC or Intermediate Certificate with five senior full credits. | Averages run from 70% for University 1 to 85% for Health Sciences. |
| Alberta | Bangladesh national curriculum with five subjects. Official HSC with final marks for final admission. | Program subjects sit in a separate program tool. |
| Memorial | HSC with a B average in the required subject areas and a pass in each. | It asks for a standardized English test and your Secondary marksheet. |
Read the row, then read the program page. A country row tells you the credential is known. It doesn't tell you a program will admit you. York says only the most qualified candidates are considered. Western says admitted students usually have at least a B average on the Canadian scale. It also says some programs are more competitive than others.
McGill's wording needs a direct question. Its list says First Division. Your result sheet shows grade points and letters. Send McGill your result sheet and ask how it applies that label. Don't guess a match yourself.
Subjects decide more than your GPA
Each degree has its own subject list. UBC's Science degree asks for HSC Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. UBC says it may waive Physics if you have an A in both HSC Mathematics and Chemistry. Its Engineering degree asks for Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Its Commerce degree asks for HSC Mathematics. Arts asks for no extra subjects.
Laurier names the Bangladesh subject it accepts for each Canadian course. Grade 12 Higher Mathematics meets its calculus and its functions course. Grade 12 Statistics meets its statistics course, though it may ask for a course outline. Senior Biology, Chemistry and Physics meet its science courses.
SFU asks every applicant for at least 60% in senior Mathematics. Computing Science adds one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Engineering Science needs Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. If you fall short, SFU points to a pathway through Fraser International College. That route is a different program, so read its terms first.
Western's Engineering program needs Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It also asks you to take the Casper test. Western says it can take three weeks to get those results. It won't make an offer without them. Western's Computer Science needs Mathematics and any science.
Manitoba shows how far averages can spread. University 1 asks for 70% in English, Mathematics and two more academic courses, with no course below 60%. Engineering asks for 80% and no required course below 70%. Health Sciences asks for 85%. From Fall 2026, Manitoba also has an alternative University 1 route. It's for students whose stream left out Grade 12 Mathematics or English. That route asks for 80% and no course below 70%.
Make a simple check before you pay any fee. Write each program's required subjects in one column. Write your matching HSC subject in the next. Mark any gap. Then ask the university about that gap. The engineering requirements guide explains why the exact science subjects matter.
O-level and A-level students in Bangladesh
If your school teaches O-levels and A-levels, apply as a British-patterned student. Don't use the HSC rules. Alberta's Bangladesh page lists the GCE A-level as a separate curriculum and links to its own A-level rules. UBC's country menu has a separate British-patterned option too.
U of T asks for five different O-level or IGCSE subjects and three different A-levels. It'll consider four AS subjects in place of three A-levels for most programs. English must appear at O, AS or A level. Mathematics at AS or A level is needed for programs with a calculus requirement. U of T doesn't count General Paper or similar subjects.
Alberta asks for three approved A-levels. For final admission, your school sends predicted grades issued on or after March 1. If you've already finished, Alberta uses your final A-level certificates. Check which A-level subjects your program needs on Alberta's subject list.
Documents, translations and attestation
Each school has its own document path. UBC says your certificates must be official. It accepts photocopies certified by your principal, head or counsellor. It doesn't accept notarized copies. Western asks you to upload copies first. After you accept an offer, your school sends final records to WES. Western wants the WES-Basic Document-by-Document ICAP report.
Western also says everything must be in English. If a record isn't in English, add an official literal translation that's been notarized. Ask your school first. Many schools prepare one.
Bangladesh's myGov portal lists an attestation service for HSC certificates and transcripts. It's meant for students going abroad. On October 19, 2026, it listed a fee of 200 taka per page and five working days. Attestation confirms a record. It isn't an admission decision. Ask each university whether it wants an attested copy before you pay for one.
Some schools want an outside report. Western uses WES. Others don't. Read the credential evaluation guide to see how those reports work. Only order one when a university asks for it.
English proof: tests and waivers
Bangladesh isn't on U of T's list of countries that may qualify for an English exemption. U of T also has a four-year route for English schools. That route only works in a country where English is the dominant language. Most HSC students will plan for a test at U of T.
UBC has nine routes. One is four years at an eligible international school that teaches in English, in a country where English isn't the main language. UBC names the school types. They include IB schools, Council of International Schools members, schools with US or Canadian curricula and British A-level schools. For A-level students, UBC wants an A or B in A Level First Language English or English Literature. The General Paper doesn't count. UBC's test scores for the 2027/2028 Winter Session must date from January 1, 2025 or later.
SFU accepts the last four years at a recognized international school in a non-English country, with 70% in senior English. It also accepts O-Level English at grade 4 or C. For GCE students, Alberta accepts a B or better in IGCSE English Language or Literature. York may waive its test for a B in O-level English. It won't waive it for a senior English course alone.
Waterloo exempts students whose last four years were taught entirely in English. You must prove it with official transcripts or a mailed letter from your principal. Emailed letters aren't accepted. Waterloo may still ask for a test. Memorial asks every Bangladesh HSC applicant for a test result. Compare accepted tests in the English test guide.
Scholarships for 2027 entry
UBC International Scholars is open for September 2027. You apply to UBC first. You also need a nominator and a separate teacher referee. The award application is due November 15, 2026. Your documents and English proof are due January 31, 2027. If your final certificate isn't ready by then, UBC says to send it as soon as you have it. Nursing and some other degrees aren't eligible.
UBC's merit awards have older labels. Its IMES range of CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 a year is for 2026/2027. Its OIS range of CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 is for 2025/2026. The Fall 2027 values are pending. UBC says these awards don't cover the full cost of a degree.
U of T's Pearson award for September 2027 has passed its first steps. The school nomination closed October 9, 2026. The admission deadline was October 16, 2026. The November 6, 2026 scholarship step follows those two dates. It doesn't reopen them. Browse other options in scholarships for international students.
Tuition and living costs
York prints approximate international tuition for fall/winter 2026-2027. Most Arts and Sciences programs are about CAN$40,000. Computer Science is about CAN$38,000. Engineering is about CAN$47,000. York hasn't published 2027-2028 figures. See York tuition and fees for detail.
Carleton has published international tuition for 2027/2028 and says it'll stay the same for 2028/2029. Its BA and BSc group is CAN$39,000 a year. Its business group is CAN$45,000. Its engineering and computing group is CAN$55,000. Most groups add about CAN$2,500 in other fees. See Carleton tuition and fees.
These figures are for one year of tuition. Housing, food and travel come on top. Multiply by the number of years in your program. Then subtract only awards that renew.
Co-op for international students
Co-op mixes study terms with paid work terms. Waterloo says international students can apply to any of its co-op programs. It also says space to switch into co-op in first year is very limited. So pick a co-op program when you apply. Compare schools in Ontario universities with co-op programs.
IRCC changed its rule this year. As of April 1, 2026, post-secondary students don't need a co-op work permit for required work placements. Your study permit still has to show that you can work on campus. You also need a school letter saying the placement is required. You must study full time. The placement can't be more than half of your program. English or French as a second language courses don't qualify, and neither do courses that only prepare you for another program.
Study permit, funds and PAL
An offer isn't a study permit. IRCC lists your letter of acceptance, a PAL or TAL, a passport and photos, proof of funds and a letter of explanation. Your local visa office can ask for more.
For applications made on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC asks one student studying outside Quebec to show CAN$23,448 for living costs. Tuition and travel come on top. You also need a plan to pay for later years. IRCC lists bank statements for the past six months and scholarships among the proof it accepts. Quebec sets its own amount.
Most students, including undergraduates, need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL, unless an exemption applies. Your school helps you get it. IRCC's page gives validity dates for the 2025 and 2026 cap years. The 2027 cap-year details are pending, so check them before you apply. See the international students guide for the full permit steps.
Your next steps
Pick programs whose required subjects match your HSC. Write to McGill or any school whose wording doesn't match your result sheet. Book an English test early unless a waiver clearly fits you. Keep your SSC and HSC records ready to send. Then check each date on the Canadian application deadlines page and the UBC deadlines page.
