For Fall 2027, you can apply to Canadian universities with a Mexican Bachillerato, the certificate you earn after preparatoria. U of T, UBC, McGill, York and others list it. Most rules carry no intake year. Your grades out of 10 are read by each school. There isn't a single Canadian conversion.
Reviewed October 19, 2026. Every rule below comes from a university or federal page we read on that date. Dated items carry their cycle. Where a 2027 figure isn't out yet, we say so.
What your Mexican certificate is called in Canada
In Mexico you may say prepa, preparatoria or bachillerato. Canadian pages use the final certificate name instead. U of T, York and UBC write Bachillerato. McGill writes Bachillerato General. uOttawa uses Certificado de Bachillerato and tells you it matches a Canadian high school diploma. Manitoba's Mexico block uses its own spelling of the same certificate.
These names point to the same stage of school. They don't all treat every stream the same way. Laurier accepts two streams by name. One is the Bachillerato General, the academic stream. The other is the Bachillerato Tecnologico when it comes with a professional technician title. McGill takes a stricter line. It wants an academic, pre-university diploma. It says studies at technical or vocational high schools aren't normally eligible.
So check your stream before you pick schools. Look at your kardex, the official subject record your school keeps. Note the stream name, the subjects in your last three semesters and the scale printed on it. Send that detail with any question you ask an admissions office. A short email with the exact stream name gets a clearer answer than "Is prepa okay?"
If you studied the International Baccalaureate, called IB, or an American diploma at a private school, use that curriculum's rules. Don't apply on the Mexican route just because you live in Monterrey or Guadalajara. Universities review the record you actually earned.

| University | Official Mexico rule | What still needs your attention |
|---|---|---|
| U of T | Bachillerato listed as the minimum credential. | No published Mexico average. Rotman Commerce and other programs set their own subject needs. |
| UBC | Bachillerato; in past years an average of 8 out of 10 was needed. | The 8 is labelled past years, not a 2027 cut-off. Sauder lists Pre-Calculus. |
| McGill | Bachillerato General; minimum is a B+ equivalent. | Technical school studies aren't normally eligible. Management needs senior math at Pre-Calculus level. |
| York | Bachillerato listed for Mexico. | York says meeting the minimum isn't a promise of admission. Check each program. |
| Laurier | General or Tecnologico stream; six senior academic courses. | Its 10-point conversion is its own. It may ask for course descriptions for math and science. |
| uOttawa | Certificado de Bachillerato with at least 8/10. | Some programs need more. Prerequisites must come from your final year unless stated. |
| Manitoba | Five senior full credits; Commerce 8.0 (80%) with no course below 7.0. | University 1 is lower at 7.0. Compare the faculty row, not just the country row. |
| SFU | Bachillerato; at least 7/10 in Senior Mathematics. | Beedie business also scores a supplemental application. |
| Memorial | Bachiller; average of 8 in required senior subjects. | A standardized English test is required. Final certificate needs a certified translation. |
| Alberta | Bachillerato listed in its credential table. | The table is undated. Your program's subjects and average are listed separately. |
The country row is only step one. Every school then applies its program rules. A strong overall average won't cover a missing math course. Read the program row for the exact degree you want, then compare it with your kardex.
How your grades out of 10 are read
Mexican schools mark on a 10-point scale. Canadian schools mostly think in percentages. That gap causes most of the confusion for Mexican families. The safest rule is simple. Report your grades exactly as printed and let each school convert them.
Here's why. Laurier prints a conversion table for Mexico. It treats 10 as 100%, 9 as 87.5%, 8 as 75%, 7 as 62.5% and 6 as 50%. It explains that it converts grades to reflect a 50% pass. Manitoba's Mexico block, though, writes 8.0 next to 80% and 7.0 next to 70%. The same 8 means 75% at one school and 80% at another. Neither school is wrong. Each is describing its own review.
Other schools skip the percentage step. uOttawa asks for a minimum average of 8 out of 10. Memorial asks for an average of 8 in the required subject areas, with a pass in each. SFU asks for at least 7 out of 10 in senior mathematics. UBC says that in past years an average of 8 on Mexico's 10-point scale was needed. It also says grades needed differ by degree and change from year to year.
Don't take an online converter's number and use it to rule yourself in or out. If your school uses a 5 to 10 scale or adds decimals, keep those marks. If it uses semesters, send all of them. The admissions team reads the scale on the document. A self-made percentage only adds a step that can go wrong.
Business programs: math is the gate
If you want business, plan around mathematics first. Every published business route here names a math course.
UBC Sauder, the Commerce degree at UBC Vancouver, lists Upper Secondary Math at the Pre-Calculus level as its minimum. It also names related subjects, such as language arts, math and certain social studies. McGill's Management faculty asks for senior high school math at a minimum of Pre-Calculus. SFU's Beedie School of Business needs senior level math. It then combines your grades with a supplemental application, so grades alone won't decide your file.
Manitoba is the clearest on numbers. Its Commerce row for Mexico asks for an equivalent average of 8.0 (80%) over four senior courses. These are English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics and two other academic courses. No course may fall below 7.0 (70%). Its general University 1 route uses 7.0 (70%) with a 6.0 floor. That gap shows why the business row matters more than the country minimum.
Laurier helps you match Mexican courses to its subject names. For the academic stream, it maps Mathematics IV to Grade 12 functions math. It maps Differential and Integral Calculus to calculus and Probability and Statistics II to statistics. English IV counts as Grade 12 English. Laurier may ask for detailed course descriptions to confirm the content. Keep your syllabus or course outline handy.
If your stream dropped calculus in fifth or sixth semester, flag it early. Some degrees will still consider you. Others won't. Compare the business and commerce program guide with each school's row. Then read the program page, such as UBC Sauder Commerce requirements or SFU business requirements.
Documents and translation
Ask for transcripts early. Mexican schools can take weeks to issue certified copies, and Canadian offices often want them in a set format.
UBC wants official certificates. It accepts photocopies certified by your principal, head or counsellor. It says notarized copies aren't acceptable. Memorial asks for a translated interim transcript plus the original when you apply. Later it wants a certified translation of your final certificate and a certified copy in Spanish sent by post or courier. uOttawa asks final-year students for transcripts from the last three years and first-trimester results from the current year.
Laurier wants transcripts covering Grades 10 to 12, including courses still in progress. To clear conditions, your final transcript and proof of graduation must come straight from the issuing school or board. Read each list closely. One school's rule doesn't carry over to the next.
An outside credential report usually isn't needed for first-year entry. Read the credential-evaluation guide to learn when a report helps. Then order one only if a school asks for it.
English tests and exemptions
Spanish is your first language, so plan on an English test unless a school clearly exempts you. U of T's exemption list of countries doesn't include Mexico. Its other exemption covers four years in Canada or in an English-language school in a country where English is the main language.
UBC is a little wider. It counts four or more years at an eligible international school that teaches in English, even in a country where English isn't the main language. Those years must come just before you start. A school in Mexico that teaches in English could fit this rule. UBC decides which schools count, so ask before you skip a test.
Several minimums line up. U of T and UBC both list IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Carleton lists 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each band. Duolingo differs. U of T asks for 120 overall with 120 in Production. UBC asks for 125 overall with set part scores. For 2027/2028 entry, UBC only accepts test scores dated January 1, 2025 or later.
uOttawa asks for a test for English programs unless you've had three years of full-time English-only study in a country where English is an official language. Memorial says plainly that a standardized test is required for Mexico. Compare more tests in the English test guide. Book early so official scores reach each school before its deadline.
Scholarships: what is open and what has passed
Most Canadian scholarships for Mexican students are general international awards. Few name Mexico at all. Sort them by date first, then by fit.
Open now: UBC International Scholars. Applications for the September 2027 intake opened October 5, 2026. You apply for UBC admission first. The award application is due November 15, 2026. Documents and proof of English are due January 31, 2027. You need a school nominator and a different teacher referee. The program is for students with high marks, strong leadership and significant financial need. You must have finished high school no earlier than June 2026. If you apply here, UBC won't also consider you for its merit awards.
Merit awards at UBC. UBC's International Major Entrance Scholarship pays CAN$10,000 to CAN$25,000 a year. That range is labelled 2026/2027. The Fall 2027 value is pending. All international applicants are considered automatically. UBC's Okanagan campus also lists a CAN$6,000 Bachelor of Commerce International Launch Award for the September 2027 intake. It's applied as a tuition credit and can renew for three more years.
Passed: Pearson at U of T. Pearson covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. For September 2027, school nominations closed October 9, 2026. The admission deadline was October 16, 2026. The November 6 deadline only serves students who met both. If you missed them, plan without Pearson this year. U of T also says it can't give financial aid to international students.
Carleton. Its viewbook lists automatic entrance awards of CAN$4,000 to CAN$12,000 over four years, based on your average. Its Prestige Scholarships need a separate application by March 1. Find more awards in the international student scholarship list.
Tuition for a business degree
Tuition for international students is high, and business often costs more than arts. Use the exact program's fee row. Don't use a national average.
Carleton has published real figures for 2027/2028 and 2028/2029. Its BCom and other business degrees cost CAN$45,000 a year. Its arts and science group costs CAN$39,000. Engineering and computing cost CAN$55,000. Carleton says these rates are frozen for both years. It adds about CAN$2,500 in miscellaneous fees, which includes health insurance and a transit pass.
Living costs come on top. Carleton estimates CAN$14,010 for eight months in a traditional residence, using 2026 fees. It puts off-campus housing and food at about CAN$18,000. For other schools, use the UBC tuition and fees guide and the U of T tuition and fees guide. U of T says final fees are usually set in the spring. Treat any 2027 figure as pending until the school posts it.
Study permit, funds and the PAL
A Canadian offer is not a permit. After you accept, you apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, called IRCC, for a study permit.
IRCC asks for your letter of acceptance, a valid passport and proof of funds. Most students also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL. Your university tells you how to get it. McGill students in Quebec need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate, called a CAQ, which has its own money rules.
For applications from September 1, 2026, IRCC asks a single student to show CAN$23,448 a year for living costs outside Quebec. Tuition and travel are extra. The 2027 amount is pending, so check it again before you apply. Proof can include a scholarship letter and bank statements for the past six months. A visa office can still ask for other papers.
IRCC's PAL page gives validity dates for the 2025 and 2026 cap years only. Specific 2027 cap-year rules are pending. Read the page again when your offer arrives. The international student guide covers the steps after an offer.
Your next steps from Mexico
Pick four to six programs that match your stream and your math. Write each school's minimum next to your current average out of 10. Add the business math rule. Then book your English test and ask your school about certified transcripts. Mark November 15 if UBC's need-based award fits your family. Keep each school's deadline in the application deadline guide. Parents can use the guide for international families to plan funds.
