Two different ways to study in French
uOttawa is a large bilingual university in Ottawa. It offers more than 350 undergraduate programs in English and French. Its courses run in English, French or both, and you must master one of the two languages to be admitted.
Laurentian is in Sudbury and describes itself as a bilingual and francophone community. It offers over 30 French programs and more than 500 French courses. It also says about a quarter of its students study in French.
So the choice often comes down to size and city. uOttawa gives you more French programs and a large francophone student body in the capital. Laurentian gives you a smaller campus in Northern Ontario, with French programs in business, sciences, health, education and social sciences.

Which programs you can take in French
Laurentian's French undergraduate list includes Administration des affaires, Comptabilité, Biochimie, Biologie, Criminologie, Droit et justice, Kinésiologie, Orthophonie, Psychologie, Sciences infirmières, Service social and Sociologie. It also offers French teacher education. Check that your exact program appears there before you apply.
uOttawa offers programs in French across its faculties. If you come from a French-as-a-second-language program, it also has a French Immersion Stream in more than 80 programs. Immersion students take one third of their courses in French.
Laurentian went through a court-supervised restructuring, known as the CCAA process, that began on February 1, 2021. It announced that it had exited that process on November 28, 2022. Program lists can change from year to year, so confirm your program on Laurentian's current French programs page rather than an older list.

FRA4U, ENG4U and language proof
For uOttawa's nursing programs, FRA4U and ENG4U are both accepted, in either language stream. The French Sciences infirmières program lists FRA4U or ENG4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and a math course, each at 65% or more. The English program lists the same courses.
Laurentian's Sciences infirmières is different. It asks for a Grade 12 French course plus an English course at Grade 11 or 12. It also asks for Grade 12 chemistry, math and biology, plus another course, for six Grade 12 courses in all. If your English course is at Grade 11, you need two more Grade 12 courses.
Both schools check French skills for French programs. uOttawa accepts three years of study in French, or post-secondary study in French, instead of a test. Laurentian's nursing page asks applicants to show both French and English proficiency, and says students finishing high school are exempt from a test.

French-stream averages can be lower
uOttawa often sets a different minimum for the French and English versions of a program. Nursing shows this clearly. The English Bachelor of Science in Nursing lists a 90% minimum average. The French Sciences infirmières program lists 85%. Both are limited-enrolment programs, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a seat.
Laurentian's Sciences infirmières asks for a 75% overall average in your best six Grade 12 courses. Its English BScN uses the same 75% floor. So for French nursing, Laurentian's published minimum is 10 points lower than uOttawa's, by our calculation.
A lower minimum is not the same as an easier offer, because competition sets the real line each year. Still, if your average is in the high 70s or low 80s, Laurentian's French nursing is open to you on paper and uOttawa's is not. Look at the French requirements page for every program you consider at uOttawa.

Nursing in French at each school
Laurentian says its Sciences infirmières students start placements in first year and build more than 1,000 hours of practical experience across the degree. Its School of Nursing reserves at least four seats each year for First Nations, Inuit or Métis students.
uOttawa's nursing degree is four years and follows a set course sequence. It does not allow direct entry into second year, even with transfer credits. Students who started another nursing program, including college bachelor's programs, can't apply.
Both lead to a nursing degree in French in Ontario. Your choice may rest on city, class size and the average you can reach. Read Laurentian nursing requirements and uOttawa nursing requirements for the English versions and more detail.

Bursaries and scholarships for French study
uOttawa's French Studies Bursary is worth $1,000 a year, up to $4,000. It is awarded automatically to full-time students in a direct-entry faculty who take at least three courses in French each term. Immersion students can qualify with two courses in French or French as a second language.
uOttawa's admission scholarships for 2027-28 are automatic too. They pay $1,000 for an 85% average, $2,000 for 90% and $3,000 for 95% or higher, for eligible full-time students in direct-entry faculties.
Laurentian's Bourse d'Excellence Francophone pays $1,250 a year to high school graduates entering a French undergraduate program, and it is renewable. Laurentian also points nursing, speech-language pathology and social work students to extra funding from the Consortium national de formation en santé.

Dates and costs
uOttawa opened applications for Fall 2027 on September 17, 2026. It recommends applying before January 15, 2027, because many programs fill quickly, and sending documents by February 15, 2027. Programs can close once they are full.
Laurentian lists January 15 for Ontario high school students, with no year shown, and February 1 for its Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It can make early conditional offers on Grade 11 marks, and you reply to an offer by June 1.
Laurentian's 2026-27 tuition for an Ontario resident is $6,120.31 for 30 credits. With fees the total is $7,375.76 with the SGA student association or $7,249.75 with the AEF, the francophone association. uOttawa says Ontario tuition rose 2% for 2026-27, with larger rises for Telfer and some dual programs. Early offers and how your marks are read
Laurentian can make an early conditional offer if your Grade 11 average is at or above the program's required average. You must also be on track for six Grade 12 4U or 4M courses and the OSSD by the end of June. If you miss those, Laurentian can withdraw the offer.
uOttawa reviews early applications sooner, and it says early applicants have a better chance of an offer before programs fill. Unless a program says otherwise, you must take its prerequisite courses in your final year of high school or later. Its averages and prerequisites are minimums and can change.
For both schools, apply as early as you can once your program list is set. A francophone student with strong Grade 11 marks may hear from Laurentian before Grade 12 marks are in.
