Reviewed August 2, 2026. A Canadian university supplementary application is an extra assessment. It is specific to a program. You send it with the main application and grades. It may be a written response or an activity profile. It may be a timed video, interview, test, or portfolio. It may be an audition or a reference form. The requirement belongs to the exact program. It is not automatic for every applicant at that university.

Direct answer: first identify whether each program's supplement is mandatory, optional, recommended, or not used. Then prepare for the assigned format and deadline in the applicant portal. Missing a required component can leave an otherwise strong academic application incomplete.

2027 supplementary application deadline status

Fall 2027 applications are not all open, and several university pages still display Fall 2026 supplementary dates. This guide does not silently relabel those old dates as 2027 deadlines.

Western has published January 15, 2027 as the separate Ivey AEO deadline. Waterloo has also published a Fall 2027 admissions timeline. Engineering applications are due January 15. Required Engineering documents are due February 1. Most other applications are due February 1. Their documents are due February 15. Waterloo says the document set can include the AIF (the Admission Information Form, Waterloo's extra application form). It can also include supplementary forms, video interview, transcripts, and other assigned items. Some programs' official pages still show the prior cycle. For those, use the new invitation and portal checklist when the Fall 2027 cycle opens.

The Ontario university application and the supplementary application are separate tasks. You submit through OUAC (Ontario's university application site). That does not submit a Waterloo AIF. It does not submit a U of T profile. It does not submit a Queen's or McMaster response. It does not submit an Ivey AEO application or a Schulich assessment.

University of WaterlooEngineering except Architecture; all Mathematics programs; Computing and Financial Management; Geography and Aviation; Science and AviationAIF plus a program-specific Supplementary Information Form for Engineering and Mathematics. Engineering applicants see an online interview. It is required for Software Engineering admission. Otherwise it has program- or scholarship-specific uses.Waterloo's Fall 2027 timeline sets February 1, 2027 as the Engineering document deadline. It sets February 15, 2027 for most other program documents. Follow the personalized portal checklist.
University of TorontoAll St. George Engineering; Rotman Commerce; St. George Computer Science; UTM Computer Science; selected UTSC Management, co-op, double-degree, and other programs; plus portfolio, audition, or statement programsThe format is program-specific. U of T Engineering uses an Online Student Profile with activities, written material, and timed written/video responses. Rotman uses short written and video responses.The central page still displays 2026 supplemental deadlines. Treat those as prior-cycle evidence and confirm Fall 2027 dates in Join U of T or the Engineering Applicant Portal.
Queen's UniversitySmith Commerce, on-campus Health Sciences, and the four-year Nursing programOne timed written response and one video response through Kira Talent. Queen's publishes separate written and video scoring rubrics.The admissions page shows February 15 for fall-entry supplements. But applicants should confirm the year and exact time in SOLUS before relying on it for Fall 2027.
McMaster UniversityArts & Science, Wilson College, Integrated Business & Humanities, Engineering, Computer Science, iBioMed, Health Sciences, Nursing, Integrated Science, Integrated Arts, and other listed Level I or upper-year programs; Business is currently optionalThe format varies by program. Faculty of Engineering applications use Kira Talent; Nursing uses CASPer; Health Sciences and other programs publish their own written or creative process.McMaster's current central list still shows 2026 dates. Do not copy them into a Fall 2027 calendar; use the new invitation and program page when the cycle opens.
Western University / IveyIvey Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO) for secondary-school applicantsA separate Ivey application is needed in addition to the Western/OUAC application. It includes awards. It includes two activity essays of up to 500 words each. It includes up to five additional activities. It includes verifiable references. It includes a five-question Kira video interview.Western's current Fall 2027 schedule sets January 15, 2027 as the Ivey AEO application deadline. This deadline is separate. Applying to Western and indicating AEO interest on OUAC does not replace the Ivey submission.
York University / SchulichDirect-entry Schulich BBAA Leadership Profile with three to five experiences and references comes first. Then there are Kira video interviews and a timed written exercise.The live Schulich page still identifies February 3, 2026 as the direct-entry deadline. Wait for the Fall 2027 form and invitation rather than carrying that date forward.

Some high-demand cases appear here as examples. Not every Canadian university or selective program appears here. Open the current program page and your assigned to-do list each time. Other things can have a different process. They include a portfolio, an audition, an identity form, an extenuating-circumstances form, an English-language document or a professional-program test.

For most high-school applicants, UBC uses its Personal Profile. It then adds differences by degree. Read the current UBC Personal Profile guide for several details. Those details are applicant exceptions, prompt types, character-limit planning, the four published evaluation criteria, referee rules and original editing examples.

Waterloo AIF: required programs and current rules

Waterloo does not require the Admission Information Form for most programs. Its current required list is Engineering except Architecture, all Mathematics programs, Computing and Financial Management, Geography and Aviation, and Science and Aviation. Engineering and Mathematics applicants also complete a Supplementary Information Form. Architecture and most other Arts, Environment, Health, and Science programs do not use the AIF.

The current Waterloo AIF asks about goals for attending Waterloo and involvement outside the classroom, with the official page publishing 150-word limits for the main questions. Applicants submit one AIF that Waterloo uses for all programs where it is required. After submission it cannot be edited or viewed, so Waterloo recommends drafting elsewhere, proofreading, and saving a screenshot.

Engineering interview rules are narrower than the old version of this guide suggested. The general Engineering interview is optional for admission. It is required for Faculty of Engineering entrance-scholarship consideration. The Software Engineering interview is required for admission. Systems Design Engineering applicants see one more interview. It is used for a named award.

U of T supplemental applications are program-specific

U of T's central list currently names supplemental components for all St. George Engineering programs, Rotman Commerce, St. George Computer Science, UTM Computer Science, several UTSC program areas, Kinesiology, Architecture and Visual Studies, and Music. Most U of T programs use academic results without a supplement.

U of T Engineering's mandatory Online Student Profile includes academic and extracurricular information, program preferences, and a Personal Profile with timed written and video responses. The official Engineering page says an application will not be considered without the profile. Rotman Commerce separately uses short written and video responses through Kira Talent. A student applying to both therefore follows two distinct instructions rather than reusing one generic "U of T video essay."

Queen's: current supplement, not the old PSE

The old general Queen's Personal Statement of Experience is not the current first-year process. Queen's now requires a Kira Talent Supplementary Application for Smith Commerce, on-campus Health Sciences, and four-year Nursing. Each program receives its own submission. The current format is one written response followed by one video response.

Queen's publishes the scoring evidence applicants should use. Strong written responses describe a specific challenge. They also describe initiative or persistence. They describe thoughtful problem-solving and reflection. Strong video responses show a relevant example. They show ownership and adaptability. They show appreciation of other perspectives and learning. The exceptional rubric values vivid, authentic, reflective answers. It does not value a list of clubs.

Applicants to the on-campus BHSc can use the complete Queen's Health Sciences requirements and Kira guide. That guide keeps the supplement beside the program's Ontario prerequisites. It also keeps it beside the Fall 2027 dates, the on-campus and online distinction, and current source-status notes.

McMaster: do not mix one program's format with another

McMaster publishes a central program list, but the format varies. Its Faculty of Engineering supplements for Engineering, iBioMed, Computer Science, and Bachelor of Technology use Kira Talent. Nursing applicants use CASPer. Honours Health Sciences has its own supplementary application; the university's central page does not label CASPer or a video essay as the Level I Health Sciences requirement. Business currently lists an optional submission.

Nursing applicants can use the current Casper test guide and original practice questions. It covers the 2026–2027 format and registration. It covers official practice and scoring. It covers accommodations and program-specific verification. The guide keeps Casper separate from McMaster's BHSc supplement. It also keeps Casper separate from Kira-based Engineering components.

Instructions are emailed. McMaster says the portal status can remain "notified" for three to four weeks after the supplementary deadline. Keep the submission confirmation and check the portal again later.

Use the McMaster University admission requirements guide. It puts each program-specific supplement beside its prerequisite courses. It also puts it beside the current planning range. The guide also shows OUAC timing and offer-round context.

Ivey AEO and Schulich BBA

Ivey AEO is a conditional pre-admission status. It is not the Western degree a high-school student picks for first and second year. You must apply to Western or an affiliate through OUAC. You must also show your intention to seek AEO. You must complete the separate Ivey application. The current Ivey application asks for two activity essays of up to 500 words. It asks for up to five additional activities. It asks for references who can verify each activity. It asks for a five-question Kira video interview. Ivey says academics and leadership are weighted equally.

Western's current Fall 2027 schedule lists January 15, 2027. That is the separate Ivey AEO deadline. Use the complete Western Ivey AEO requirements and application guide. It covers the competitive academic guidance. It covers activity rules and the Kira format. It also covers references and conditional progression requirements. Compare these before you submit.

Schulich BBA applicants also complete a separate assessment. The current Leadership Profile uses three to five experiences with references, followed by video interviews and a timed writing exercise through Kira Talent. Applying to a different York business degree is not the same as applying to Schulich BBA.

How to write a strong supplementary application

1. Decode the prompt before choosing a story

Underline the task verb and the evidence the question requests. "Describe," "evaluate," "reflect," and "why this program" are different jobs. A polished story that avoids the actual question is still a weak response.

2. Build an evidence bank

Collect six to ten truthful examples before drafting: paid work, family or caregiving responsibilities, clubs, athletics, creative work, independent projects, community activity, academic exploration, conflict, failure, change, or sustained personal interests. For each example record:

Use the extracurricular activities for university applications guide to compare what UBC, Waterloo, Ivey, Schulich, and Queen's currently ask applicants to disclose and reflect on. It also explains why contribution and verification matter more than collecting prestigious titles.

  • the setting and constraint;
  • the applicant's own responsibility;
  • the decision or action the applicant took;
  • a concrete result or observable change;
  • what the applicant learned or would do differently;
  • dates, hours, numbers, and a person who can verify the facts.

3. Use an action–evidence–reflection structure

Open with the direct answer. Give only the context needed to understand the decision. Spend most of the response on the applicant's actions and reasoning, then use the result as evidence and finish with a specific reflection. STAR can help organize notes, but a visible formula is not the goal.

Weak: "As club president, I showed leadership and learned teamwork."

Stronger evidence pattern: identify the disagreement or unmet need. Explain the applicant's decision and trade-off. Show what changed. Acknowledge other people's contribution. State how the experience changed the applicant's next action. The final response must use the student's real facts and wording.

4. Connect to the program without brochure praise

Program fit is most credible when it links a real interest or prior exploration to something concrete in the curriculum, learning model, community, or work structure. "World-class university" and "prestigious program" could describe dozens of schools and do not establish fit.

5. Revise for density, not decoration

Cut repeated setup, résumé lists, generic adjectives, and claims the example does not prove. Keep names, dates, roles, hours, and outcomes consistent with the activity chart and reference. Use the entire limit only when every sentence earns its place.

Community workidentified a need, worked with stakeholders, measured participation or continuityservice, humility, impact, or unintended consequences

No category is automatically impressive. Universities can evaluate how an applicant thinks and acts only when the response contains precise, believable evidence.

How to prepare for a university video interview

Timed video formats check how you communicate under limits. They do not check professional production quality. Use the university's own practice environment. The question count, preparation time, response time, retakes, and whether parts must be completed in one sitting can differ.

  1. Test the supported browser, camera, microphone, lighting, framing, and internet connection.
  2. Practise giving a one-sentence answer before the example.
  3. Use one concrete situation. Explain the applicant's reasoning. Do not explain every activity on the résumé.
  4. End with a genuine reflection or decision, not a memorized slogan.
  5. Practise unfamiliar prompts so the structure remains flexible.
  6. Arrange disability-related accommodations before starting the timed assessment.

Do not read a hidden script or guess leaked questions. A rehearsed bank of truthful experiences is more adaptable than a memorized answer.

Final supplementary application checklist

  1. Check the exact program, not just the university. It may require, recommend, or not use a supplement.
  2. Copy the Fall 2027 deadline from the applicant portal and record its time zone.
  3. List every component: written response, activity chart, reference, video, test, portfolio, audition, or supporting document.
  4. Match each prompt to one clear example. Include the applicant's action, evidence, result, and reflection.
  5. Check every number, date, role, award, and reference against a truthful record.
  6. Revise for directness and specificity without replacing the applicant's voice.
  7. Run the official practice or equipment check before a timed response.
  8. Submit early enough to resolve technical trouble and retain the confirmation email or screenshot.

AI, editing, and application integrity

Your submission must be truthful and original. It must match the university's current terms. Waterloo says applicants are responsible for their answers. Untrue, incorrect, or plagiarized AI-generated material can lead to admission denial or withdrawal of an offer. Another person cannot complete the AIF for the applicant.

Editing should make the student's meaning clearer. It should not make up experience, impact, or voice. A safe review asks if the response answers the prompt. It asks if every factual claim can be verified. It asks where reasoning is unclear and what can be cut. It does not invent a hardship, turn a participant into a founder, or supply a personality designed to please a rubric.
